Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes: A Comparison of Risk Factors and Prevalence in Native and Migrant Mothers of Portuguese Generation XXI Birth Cohort.

Epidemiological studies report conflicting findings regarding association between maternal immigration status and pregnancy outcomes. In this study we compared risk factors and prevalence of adverse pregnancy outcomes in native Portuguese and migrants. Cross-sectional analysis was conducted using information collected at delivery from the participants of Generation XXI birth cohort. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess the association between migrant status and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Prevalence of risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes varied between native Portuguese and

Assessment of Critical Knowledge on Maternal and Newborn care Services among Primary Level Nurse Mid-wives in Kapilvastu District of Nepal.

Background Despite greater emphasis on maternal and neonatal health through policy and programming in Nepal, maternal and neonatal health is still not impressive. Health care providers' knowledge assessment on maternal and neonatal care has been well documented elsewhere, but it is very little understood in Nepal. Objective The primary objective of this study was to assess the critical knowledge of primary level nurse- midwives on maternal and newborn care in Kapilvastu District of Nepal. Method This was an Institution based cross-sectional study, conducted in Kapilvastu district, Nepal among

Climate change and the potential effects on maternal and pregnancy outcomes: an assessment of the most vulnerable--the mother, fetus, and newborn child.

In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) presented a large amount of evidence about global warming and the impact of human activities on global climate change. The Lancet Commission have identified a number of ways in which climate change can influence human health: lack of food and safe drinking water, poor sanitation, population migration, changing disease patterns and morbidity, more frequent extreme weather events, and lack of shelter. Pregnant women, the developing fetus, and young children are considered the most vulnerable members of our species and are already marg

The association of infant feeding with parent-reported infections and hospitalisations in the West Australian Aboriginal Child Health Survey.

OBJECTIVE: To examine infant feeding associations with parent-reported infections and hospitalisations in Western Australian Aboriginal infants and children. METHOD: Families in Western Australia with children under 18 years of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent were included. A stratified multi-stage sample using an area-based sampling frame was compiled. Survey weights produced unbiased estimates for the population of families with Aboriginal children. Data were collected on demographic variables, maternal and infant characteristics and parent-reported recurring chest, ear and gas

Here's the latest research in pediatric pain control.

Because pediatric patients are at high risk for inadequate pain management, ED staff should be vigilant about identifying painful conditions, treating them quickly with adequate analgesics, and ensuring adequacy of outpatient pain management. Studies have shown that analgesia was given to pediatric patients less frequently than adults in the ED. Research shows that pain management is better when protocols are used to manage pain. Often, parents feel that their child's pain management is inadequate. Staff education, including regular lectures or informal inservicing, can lead to better manageme

Parent-child relationship disorders. Part II. The vulnerable child syndrome and its relation to parental overprotection.

Parents who are excessively concerned about their child's health are often characterized as being overprotective. We hypothesized that parental overprotection is independent of parental perception of child vulnerability to illness or injury despite their presumed interchangeability. A community-based sample of 892 parents (92% white, 84% married, 88% middle-upper socioeconomic status, 90% mothers) completed a three-part protocol (clinical background data, the Child Vulnerability Scale, and the Parent Protection Scale). Correlates of high parental perception of child vulnerability included a me

Serious group A streptococcal infection around delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To differentiate the features of serious, perinatal, group A streptococcal infection from other types of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. DATA SOURCES: Thirty-eight obstetric cases that were fatal or fulfilled the criteria of Centers of Disease Control and Prevention for streptococcal toxic shock syndrome were reviewed. Three cases were from Asahi General Hospital, 26 from MEDLINE (1966-December 1998), four from Japana Centra Revuo Medicina (1987-November 1998) using the search terms "Streptococcus," "Streptococcus pyogenes," "Streptococcal infection," "pregnancy," "labor," "del

Prenatal and perinatal factors associated with breast-feeding initiation among inner-city Puerto Rican women.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with the initiation of breast-feeding in a predominantly Puerto Rican population living in inner-city Hartford, Conn. DESIGN: Retrospective study of 144 Latino women (mean +/- standard deviation age = 26.3 +/- 5.7 years) with children at least 1 year old but younger than 6 years old (mean +/- standard deviation age = 3.0 +/- 1.2 years) at the time of the survey. Women were recruited from agencies sponsoring health programs for mothers and children. They were interviewed in their homes (69%) or at the Hispanic Health Council, Hartford, Conn (31%). SUB

Meningococcal vaccine evolution.

Neisseria meningitidis is a leading cause of bacterial sepsis and meningitis worldwide. Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) can develop rapidly and is associated with high mortality and morbidity. Case fatality in developed countries averages 10% and higher rates are reported in less prosperous regions. The incidence of invasive disease due to Neisseria meningitidis is highly variable according to geographical area and serogroup distribution. The major disease burden is in developing countries; in industrialized countries meningococcal disease occurs sporadically and most IMD is caused by ser

Treating nicotine use and dependence of pregnant and parenting smokers: an update.

A growing volume of research since 1975 has demonstrated that clinically proven, effective interventions exist to produce long-term or even permanent abstinence from tobacco for all smokers. Achieving cessation is important for all smokers but especially for pregnant and parenting smokers because their smoking poses risks not only for themselves but also for their pregnancies and children. Treatments for smokers in general apply to parenting smokers, but special considerations regarding treatment need to be made for pregnant women. Due to the harms associated with exposure to environmental tob

The impact of a dedicated antenatal clinic on the obstetric and neonatal outcomes in adolescent pregnant women.

This retrospective observational study was designed to study the impact of a dedicated antenatal clinic service on obstetric and neonatal outcomes among teenage mothers in the maternity unit of a district general hospital in the UK. Outcomes were measured to investigate improvement in obstetric and neonatal outcomes before, and 12 months after the establishment of dedicated clinic for teenage pregnant women. Significant improvement in the birth weight was observed p = 0.01. A modest decrease in neonatal admission to special care unit by 6% was observed. Rate of spontaneous vaginal deliveries i

Home safety measures and the risk of unintentional injury among young children: a multicentre case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Young children may sustain injuries when exposed to certain hazards in the home. To better understand the relation between several childproofing strategies and the risk of injuries to children in the home, we undertook a multicentre case-control study in which we compared hazards in the homes of children with and without injuries. METHODS: We conducted this case-control study using records from 5 pediatric hospital emergency departments for the 2-year period 1995-1996. The 351 case subjects were children aged 7 years and less who presented with injuries from falls, burns or scalds

Health protection and age-related legislation.

Community children's nurse Debbie James has developed an innovative scheme to allow secondary school children to obtain health advice by texting her service using mobile phones. As well as general advice about spots and rubella immunization, Sister James is also receiving inquiries about children's legal rights that also have a health protection purpose, such how old a child has to be before owning a pet or have an alcoholic drink. This article looks at how the law seeks to protect children by incrementally giving them legal rights as they develop to mature adults and how legal awareness can h
