Mutagenicity of Tenebrionid Flour Beetle Secretions Using Drosophila melanogaster Sex-Linked Recessive Lethal Test.

The Tribolium spp. beetles are the most common tenebrionids infesting flour and other stored foods. 2-Ethyl-1, 4-benzoquinone (EBQ) and 2-methyl-1, 4-benzoquinone (MBQ) are the major secretory products of these insects. Benzoquinones are highly reactive compounds which have been reported to be acutely toxic and carcinogenic to laboratory animals. Using the Drosophila melanogaster sex-linked recessive lethal test, we examined the mutagenicity of EBQ and MBQ. Feeding concentrations of 1 mM EBQ and 2 mM MBQ in 1% sucrose resulted in 72-h mortalities of 25% for EBQ and 39% for MBQ in adult Canton-

Development of a mathematical model for mechanical transmission of trypanosomes and other pathogens of cattle transmitted by tabanids.

Mechanical transmission of pathogens by biting insects is a non-specific phenomenon in which pathogens are transmitted from the blood of an infected host to another host during interrupted feeding of the insects. A large range of pathogens can be mechanically transmitted, e.g. hemoparasites, bacteria and viruses. Some pathogens are almost exclusively mechanically transmitted, while others are also cyclically transmitted. For agents transmitted both cyclically and mechanically (mixed transmission), such as certain African pathogenic trypanosomes, the relative impact of mechanical versus cyclica

Barcoded Asaia bacteria enable mosquito in vivo screens and identify novel systemic insecticides and inhibitors of malaria transmission.

This work addresses the need for new chemical matter in product development for control of pest insects and vector-borne diseases. We present a barcoding strategy that enables phenotypic screens of blood-feeding insects against small molecules in microtiter plate-based arrays and apply this to discovery of novel systemic insecticides and compounds that block malaria parasite development in the mosquito vector. Encoding of the blood meals was achieved through recombinant DNA-tagged Asaia bacteria that successfully colonised Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes. An arrayed screen of a collection of pe

Paratransgenic control of vector borne diseases.

Conventional methodologies to control vector borne diseases with chemical pesticides are often associated with environmental toxicity, adverse effects on human health and the emergence of insect resistance. In the paratransgenic strategy, symbiotic or commensal microbes of host insects are transformed to express gene products that interfere with pathogen transmission. These genetically altered microbes are re-introduced back to the insect where expression of the engineered molecules decreases the host's ability to transmit the pathogen. We have successfully utilized this strategy to reduce car

Efficacy of a bead formulation of MCH for protecting live Douglas-fir from infestation by Dendroctonus pseudotsugae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

The Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, antiaggregation pheromone, 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (MCH), has been used operationally in western North America to protect high-risk, high-valued trees during outbreaks since the spring of 2000. The most commonly used formulation of MCH is a bubble capsule manufactured by several different companies. Bubble capsules are made of 2 layers of plastic film that breakdown very slowly under natural conditions requiring resource managers to remove them after treatment in some situations. In this study, a small bead formulation of MCH (Herc

Routine insecticide regimes restructure flower-inhabiting thrips on star fruit: suppression of Megalurothrips typicus, resilience of Thrips levatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Routine agrochemical regimes are pervasive in tropical perennial crops, yet their ecological consequences remain poorly understood. We examined how nonselective insecticide exposure, arising from routine crop protection, shapes species composition, phenology, and population regulation of 2 co-occurring thrips, Megalurothrips typicus Bagnall and Thrips levatus Bhatti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.). We compared a sprayed commercial farm with an unsprayed research farm, combining weekly inflorescence sampling with soil emergence trapping, to track flower-infestin

Natural history, landscape ecology, and management of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) as pests of nursery crops.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are economically important pests of ornamental nursery crops because the presence of <5 attacks can render thin-barked deciduous trees unmarketable. In North America, Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford), Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), and Cnestus mutilatus (Blandford) are among the most destructive ambrosia beetle pest species in nursery systems. Anisandrus maiche (Stark) is a new emerging pest in North America. These species preferentially colonize physiologically stressed hosts by orienting to e

Evaluating the effectiveness of caffeine-based baits against two pest ant species.

The black cocoa ant, Dolichoderus thoracicus (Smith, 1860) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is a pest species capable of reaching high population densities in diverse habitats. In Taiwan, infestations are associated with intrusions into residential homes, damage to electrical equipment, and decreased agricultural productivity. Although baiting programs using borax-based or boric acid-based ant baits have been implemented, these efforts often yield unsatisfactory results. This study evaluated the potential of caffeine, a naturally occurring bioactive compound, as an active ingredient in ant baits for

Comparative assessment of different traps performance for capturing the New World screwworm fly.

The New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, represents a major threat to livestock production in several regions of the Americas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three trap types for C. hominivorax surveillance. The study was conducted in Uruguay (32° S), in area with a known natural presence of C. hominivorax. NZI, NZI-M (a modified version designed to optimize capture efficiency), and vertical sticky traps (VST) were used, all baited with baited with Swormlure-4 (SL-4). A Latin square design was applied, testing each trap at four sampling sites (for

Detection of Grapholitha molesta and Carposina sasakii based on environmental DNA and its field application.

BACKGROUND: Grapholitha molesta and Carposina sasakii are notorious pests that damage fruits, and are ranked among the most high-priority control targets in orchards. Chronic mixed infestation of these two economically destructive species not only pose formidable challenges to integrated pest management efforts, but also have substantial impacts on global fruit trade. Therefore, a non-destructive, rapid and efficient identification technology is urgently needed. In comparison with conventional detection methods, the environmental DNA (eDNA) approach does not require direct contact or capture o

New okra genotypes for the management of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in the diverse ecological landscapes of Central Africa.

Various aphid species, including Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), are considered important pests of okra and other vegetables. Previous studies under 1 environment in Cameroon, Central Africa, had found multiple okra genotypes with resistance to A. gossypii. However, the stability and yield performance of the "resistant" genotypes across different environments were unknown. Ten previously identified aphid-resistant okra genotypes along with 1 commercial variety and a local landrace (specific to a given location) were compared during 2 seasons in replicated trials in 4 agro-ecologi

Comparative Efficacy of Superheated Dry Steam Application and Insecticide Spray Against Common Bed Bugs Under Simulated Field Conditions.

The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius L., is a difficult urban pest to control. A simulated field study was conducted to compare the efficacy of steam application and an insecticide mixture spray (0.05% acetamiprid and 0.06% bifenthrin mixture) against C. lectularius. Three types of furniture (desk chair, upholstered armchair, and wooden table) were treated in the laboratory. The efficacy of the treatments was evaluated by visual inspection and placement of interceptor traps under the legs of the furniture. One hundred mixed stages of an insecticide-resistant population of C. lectularius were

Increased capture efficiency of Scolytinae with modified semi-funnel trap model.

Scolytinae species that, in high populations, can damage reducing wood production in forest crops. These beetles are monitored with traps baited with ethanol and increasing their efficiency can improve the integrated management of these insects. The objective was to evaluate the increase in the capture efficiency of Scolytinae with a semi-funnel trap model, in two experiments, one including wooden elements and other increasing the flight interception area and to correlate the numbers of these beetles collected with climatic factors. In the experiment 1, Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake slats w

Comparison of three trap types for monitoring insect populations in stored grains.

Three trap types--probe, cone, and sticky--were used to monitor insect populations infesting shelled maize, Zea mays L., housed in galvanized steel storage bins. Sticky traps were suspended in the headspace 1 m above the grain mass, probe traps were inserted into the grain near the top and bottom of the grain mass, and cone traps were positioned at the surface of the grain mass. Although there was some overlap, each trap type was rather specific in the range of insect species trapped. Probe traps positioned near the grain surface trapped mostly Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), Tribolium castane

High-pressure washing treatments to remove obscure mealybug (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) and lightbrown apple moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) from harvested apples.

Mixed life stages of obscure mealybug, Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret), and late 1st-instar or early 2nd-instar lightbrown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker), on 'Royal Gala' apples (Malus domestica Borkhausen) were exposed to standard packhouse processing with and without addition of high-pressure apple washer treatments. Insect removal and mortality were assessed. After standard packhouse processing approximately 60% of P. viburni remained on their host apples. The 2 high-pressure apple washer treatments (500 and 800 psi at 2.0 rods/s) were equally effective and significantly reduced

Tsetse and trypanosomiasis in the Lambwe Valley, Kenya.

The Lambwe Valley is shared between wild animals in a national park and adjacent human settlements with domestic livestock. Thicket and woodland in the valley are heavily infested with Glossina pallidipes. Rhodesian sleeping sickness continues to be a major human health hazard and livestock losses from nagana seriously affect the local economy. Epidemiology is characterized by periods of quiescence and flare-up, reflecting intermittent vector control measures to reduce transmission. The situation has been aggravated in recent years by extension of tsetse habitat and encroachment of settlements

[A model of cockroach control in a large area. II. Occurrence and distribution of Blattella germanica and Blatta orientalis in the district of Potsdam (GDR)--an infestation analysis].

Blattella germanica and Blatta orientalis occur in the district of Potsdam (German Democratic Republic). B. germanica is the real cause of plague. Up to now 2,734 building properties have been infested with cockroaches. B. germanica was found in 2,644 properties; B. orientalis was found in 20 properties and both were found in 70 properties. Infestation with cockroaches increases with urbanisation. Infestation is especially frequent in works canteens and similar rooms. Outdoor distribution of cockroaches takes place passively in food transports. Inside buildings cockroaches spread through crack
