Naphthalene Mothballs Poisoning Leading to Intravascular Hemolysis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Naphthalene is widely used in households as an insect repellent, but its poisoning is rare, especially in adults. Naphthalene is a strong oxidant with a pungent smell. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 16-year-old female who ingested three naphthalene mothballs 3 days prior to admission and presented with history of recurrent vomiting, severe pallor, jaundice, and hemoglobinuria. Investigation found severe hemolytic anemia, indirect hyperbilirubinemia, acute kidney injury, and evidence of intravascular hemolysis. Her urine output was normal throughout the course of illness. She w

Plague.

In the United States, plague poses a threat to humans from the infected animals in the endemic areas of the Western states. Plague may also be used in the near future as an agent of warfare or terrorism. Although the presentation of bubonic plague may be less of a problem, the septicemic and pneumonic forms present challenges to early diagnosis and prompt treatment. The major threat of plague as an agent of terrorism will probably be through the inhalational route. which could result in many cases of the pneumonic form, requiring early recognition and initiation of appropriate therapy. In vitro control of the camel nasal botfly, Cephalopina titillator, with doramectin, lavender, camphor, and onion oils.

Camels are very important livestock particularly in arid and semiarid lands. The oestrid fly, Cephalopina titillator (Clark), causes nasopharyngeal myiasis in camels, and it is widely distributed in many camel breeding areas triggering health hazards and severe economic losses in camels. The prevalence of infestation of camels (slaughtered at Tokh's slaughterhouse, Qalyubia Governorate, Egypt, during the period from September 2011 to March 2012) was 41.67 % (100 out of 240). Most infested camels developed clinical signs of nasal discharge, restlessness, loss of appetite, difficulty in breathin

Green Management Strategies for Cochliomyia hominivorax Myiasis: Potential of Essential Oils and Nanodelivery Systems.

Cochliomyia hominivorax, the main etiological agent of traumatic myiasis in the New World, continues to have significant health and economic impacts due to its effects on animal health, livestock production and public health in affected regions. Although conventional control strategies, including the Sterile Insect Technique and chemical insecticides, have substantially reduced its distribution, concerns regarding insecticide resistance, environmental impacts, and recent re-emergence events underscore the need for sustainable alternative control approaches. This review summarizes current advan

Application of pesticide in paddy fields: a Southeast Asia case study review.

Pesticides are widely employed in rice crops since the ecosystem and surroundings of paddy promote insects, weeds, and fungal and bacterial pathogens. Each commonly utilised pesticide possesses different uses. For instance, fungicides control fungal issues, herbicides curb weed growth, and insecticides destroy and repel insects. Although several ways to categorise them exist, pesticides are typically classified according to their chemical compositions. Rice production remains one of the most dominant crops grown in most Southeast Asian countries as it is a staple food. Nonetheless, the crop is

Arthropod Bites and Stings.

Arthropods, including insects and arachnids, significantly affect humans as vectors for infectious diseases. Arthropod bites and stings commonly cause minor, usually self-limited reactions; however, some species are associated with more severe complications. Spider bites are rarely life-threatening. There are two medically relevant spiders in the United States. Widow spider (Latrodectus) envenomation can cause muscle spasm and severe pain that should be treated with analgesics and benzodiazepines. Antivenom is not widely available in the United States but may be considered for severe, refracto

Enhancing protection against vector-borne diseases in forcibly displaced communities: evaluating the efficacy of spatial repellents for cutaneous leishmaniasis control in North-East Syria.

BACKGROUND: In Syria, during the 14 years after the outbreak of civil war, 16.7 million people have been forced to flee their homes, of which 7.2 million remain internally displaced in 2025. Breakdown in waste management caused by aerial bombardment has created ideal conditions for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) transmission, vectored by phlebotomine sandflies. Displaced populations reside in flimsy shelters where conventional vector control tools are operationally unfeasible. A small, lightweight, portable transfluthrin-based spatial repellent (Mosquito Shield™) has been developed which may cir

Willingness to pay for a mosquito bite prevention 'forest pack' in Cambodia: results of a discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: Progress towards malaria elimination in the Greater Mekong Subregion has left much of the residual malaria transmission concentrated among forest-exposed populations for whom traditional domicile focused malaria vector control is unlikely to be effective. New tools to protect these populations from vector biting outdoors are needed. METHODS: Alongside implementation research on the deployment of a "forest pack" consisting of a volatile pyrethroid (transfluthrin)-based spatial repellent (VPSR), a picaridin-based topical repellent and etofenprox treatment of clothing, an assessment

Larvicidal activity of a neem tree extract (Neemarin) against mosquito larvae in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

An insecticide containing azadirachtin, a neem tree (Azadirachta indica) extract, was tested against mosquito larvae in the Islamic Republic of Iran under laboratory and field conditions. LC50 and LC90 values for Neemarin were 0.35 and 1.81 mg/L for Anopheles stephensi, the main local malaria vector, and 0.69 and 3.18 mg/L for Culex quinquefasciatus. The mortality in the pupal stage was significantly higher than the other stages. In field trials, using recommended dosages of 1 and 2 L/hectare, mortality of Anopheles spp. larvae was also higher than Culex spp. Prevention of adult emerged and pu

Potential of 3-octanone as a lure and kill agent for control of the Brown garden snail.

The brown garden snail (Cornu aspersum) is a major agricultural pest, causing damage to a wide range of economically important crops. Withdrawal or restricted use of pollutant molluscicides like metaldehyde has prompted a search for more benign control products. This study investigated the response of snails to 3-octanone; a volatile organic compound (VOCs) produced by the insect pathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum. Concentrations of 1 - 1000 ppm of 3-octanone were first assessed in laboratory choice assays to determine behavioural response. Repellent activity was found at 1000 ppm whereas

Synthesis and characterization of barbarin, a possible source of unexplained aminorex identifications in forensic science.

Aminorex is a US DEA Schedule 1 controlled substance occasionally detected in racing horses. A number of aminorex identifications in sport horses were thought to have been caused by exposure to plant sources of aminorex. Glucobarbarin, found in plants of the Brassicaceae family, has been suggested as a potential proximate chemical source by being metabolized in the plant or the horse to aminorex. In Brassicaceae, glucobarbarin is hydrolyzed by myrosinase to yield barbarin, which serves as an insect repellant and/or attractant and is structurally related to aminorex. The synthesis, purification

Running into the Lyme-light: a retrospective cross-sectional study of tick bites and Lyme disease prevalence, incidence, and prevention in hill runners, Scotland, UK.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) incidence is increasing globally, driven by changes to habitat and human-vector interactions. Effective prevention relies on local and individual-level understanding of risk and ecosystem interactions. Despite frequent exposure to tick habitats, little is known about tick bites and LD risk among hill, trail, and mountain runners. This study aimed to evaluate the period prevalence of tick bites and incidence of LD in hill runners in Scotland, UK and examine preventive behaviours. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective survey of Scottish hill runners was conducted

Transmission blocking sugar baits for the control of Leishmania development inside sand flies using environmentally friendly beta-glycosides and their aglycones.

BACKGROUND: The sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of American visceral leishmaniasis, a disease caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania. Adults of this insect feed on blood (females only) or sugar from plant sources, but their digestion of carbohydrates is poorly studied. Beta-glycosides as esculin and amygdalin are plant compounds and release toxic compounds as esculetin and mandelonitrile when hydrolyzed. Beta-glucosidase and trehalase are essential enzymes in sand fly metabolism and participate in sugar digestion. It is therefore possible that the toxic portions of these

Control of West Nile virus, Rhode Island, 2003.

Thanks largely to systematic larviciding by the State's 39 municipalities, and aided by the public's destruction of "backyard" mosquito habitats and adoption of personal protective measures (clothing, repellant), Rhode Island minimized the potential human burden of WNV during the 2003 mosquito season (six serious WNV cases, one death, and no reports of WNV-tainted blood donations). The potential burden of WNV on domestic animals was also reduced through immunization. Nonetheless, the State's first WNV death reminds us of the danger this disease poses for the very young, for elders, and for peo

Lemongrass and Cinnamon Bark: Plant Essential Oil Blend as a Spatial Repellent for Mosquitoes in a Field Setting.

Plant essential oils (EOs) have been considered as spatial repellents to help disrupt the pathogen transmission cycle of mosquitoes. Our objective was to assess spatial repellency effects of EOs on the tropical yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) and on local mosquito populations in coastal British Columbia (Canada). In laboratory experiments using protocols of the World Health Organization, three of the solitary EOs tested proved repellent to Ae. aegypti: cinnamon bark, lemongrass, and rosemary. Binary combinations of select EOs enhanced the repellent effect of sing

Insecticidal and repellent activity of Hiptage benghalensis L. Kruz (Malpighiaceae) against mosquito vectors.

Plant-based insecticides for vector control are urgently needed for Anopheles barbirostris, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Aedes albopictus which are the primary vectors of malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and dengue, respectively, in India and other South East Asian countries. In the present study, larvicidal, adulticidal, and repellent activities of acetone root bark extract of Hiptage benghalensis were tested against the larvae and adults of the three mosquito vectors. The acetone root bark extracts of H. benghalensis was more effective as larvicides with low LC(50) (11.15-16.78 ppm) and LT50 (1

Pica with paradichlorobenzene mothball ingestion associated with toxic leukoencephalopathy.

This is a case report of central nervous system toxicity associated with paradichlorobenzene (PDCB) ingestion. The patient had ingested mothballs composed of 99.99% PDCB for a period of 7 months. She was admitted for depression and had no neurologic symptoms. Later she developed an acute cerebellar syndrome followed by stupor and coma. An extensive workup was negative except for decreasing levels of PDCB in her serum. Imaging revealed a diffuse leukoencephalopathy. Her clinical picture was attributed to PDCB toxicity.
