AIM: To study the use of a quasi-experimental design to assess the effects of scaling reimbursement policies on the incidence of chronic-periodontitis procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Interrupted time series analysis was used to compare the effects before and after policy implementation using data on the number of periodontitis-related procedures from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (n = 740,467) and the Health Screening Cohort (n = 337,904). Periodontitis-related procedures with diagnosis codes were categorized into basic (scaling or root planing), inter

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have reported associations between the number of teeth and all-cause mortality, the results vary depending on the tooth condition. Few previous studies have focused on the most effective method of counting the number of teeth to predict all-cause mortality. This study aimed to identify an effective method for counting the number of teeth according to their condition in order to predict all-cause mortality. METHODS: This cohort study used data from the Oral Health Screening to Assess Keys of Aging Well (OHSAKA) study and linked public dental check-ups and h

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: In contemporary society, social inequality in tooth loss is a significant and often overlooked issue. This study aimed to describe and examine social differentials in tooth loss among Australian adults over time.
METHODS: This analysis used data from the National Survey of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH), which was conducted in Australia in 2 waves: NSAOH-1 (2004-2006) and NSAOH-2 (2017-2018). The study employed a population-based cross-sectional design, with adults aged 15 years and older randomly selected using a 3-stage, stratified sampling method across metropolitan and re

BACKGROUND: Both atopic dermatitis (AD) and periodontitis are common chronic inflammatory diseases. However, the association between AD and periodontitis remains poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dental scaling (DS) on the risk of AD among patients with periodontitis.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study using health insurance data, we identified individuals aged ≥20 years with periodontitis and a matched cohort without a history of periodontitis in Taiwan from 2011 to 2015. Age- and sex-matching was applied to select controls (ratio = 1:1). Both cohorts we

BACKGROUND: Social isolation has been linked to higher mortality; however, it remains unknown how this association varies across individuals and social groups.
METHODS: We used a nationwide cohort study of ∼20,000 older adults with a 9·4-year follow-up period (Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study, 2013-2022), adjusting for 60 pre-baseline covariates. We also used a national insurance database to ascertain 4299 all-cause deaths. Using a causal machine-learning method, we estimated the heterogeneous association between social isolation and mortality.
FINDINGS: Social isolation was more preval

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Inflammation plays an important role in the development of diabetes, a major global health problem. Periodontal disease is also common in the general population. Because periodontal disease and poor oral hygiene can provoke transient bacteraemia and systemic inflammation, we hypothesised that periodontal disease and oral hygiene indicators would be associated with the occurrence of new-onset diabetes.
METHODS: In this study we analysed data collected between 2003 and 2006 on 188,013 subjects from the National Health Insurance System-Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) in Kor

Due to effective prevention strategies with regard to oral health in Germany, a huge reduction in the prevalence of dental caries in children and adolescents has been registered in children and adolescents. However, this improvement is considerably lower in deciduous teeth compared to permanent teeth. This shows that there is still a need for action. A study organized by the DAJ (Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Jugendzahnpflege) for the school year 2015/2016 came to the conclusion that almost 14% of the 3-year-old children in kindergartens were already affected by tooth decay. Therefore, an e

OBJECTIVES: Despite marked improvements over the past century, oral health in America is a significant problem: caries is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Much oral health research examines influences primarily in the oral cavity or focuses on a limited number of individual-level factors. The purpose of this article was to present a more encompassing conceptual model of the influences on children's oral health.
METHODS: The conceptual model presented here was derived from the population health and social epidemiology fields, which have moved toward multilevel, holistic approaches

BACKGROUND: To explore the association between obesity and tooth wear among American adults and the role of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks consumption in explaining that association.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 3541 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Obesity was determined using the body mass index and tooth wear was assessed using the modified tooth wear index. Daily intake of four categories of drinks was estimated as the average (drinks/day) of two consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. The association between obesity and number of surfaces with modera

All 1482 emergency room dental visits to Seattle's Children's Hospital and Medical Center from 1982 to 1991 were studied to evaluate trends in patients seeking care: 60% of visits were for trauma, the remainder for infection or other reasons. The number of visits was 2.1 times greater in 1991 than in 1982. Comparing the periods of 1982-1987 and 1988-1991, there was an increase in the proportion of infection-related visits from 30.5 to 43.5% of all visits. Spring/summer and weekends had the highest volume. More males (61.2%) than females received care. The largest number of visits (47.9%) occur

Despite mounting evidence of the link between oral health and systemic health, there are limited studies on individual- and community-level race/ethnic and socioeconomic correlates of tooth loss and cardiovascular disease (CVD), particularly with regard to Asian and Indigenous populations. This cross-sectional study examined the association between severe tooth loss and CVD and the individual- and community-level sociodemographic correlates of CVD in Hawai'i, where Native Hawaiian and Asian populations are predominant, utilizing 5 waves of even year data from the Hawai'i Behavioral Risk Factor

Individuals living with tetralogy of Fallot require lifelong specialized congenital heart disease care to monitor for and manage potential late complications. However, access to cardiology care remains a challenge for many patients, as does access to mental health services, dental care, obstetrical care, and other specialties required by this population. Inequities in health care access were highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to exist. Paradoxically, many social factors influence an individual's need for care, yet inadvertently restrict access to it. These include sex and gender
