Use of ICF in assessing the effects of Meniere's disorder on life.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the value of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in subjects with Meniere's disorder in relation to their quality of life. METHODS: We asked 228 members of the Finnish Meniere Federation to report the effects that Meniere's disorder had on their lives. The replies were classified on the basis of the ICF classification and related to the EuroQol 5D score and disease-specific impact. Logistic regression and decision tree analyses were used to determine the relationships. RESULTS: Seventy per…

Validity and reliability study of the Turkish version of the Lower Extremity Functional Scale in elderly adults.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization's disability and health model implicates activity limitation based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). The Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) was developed in the framework of the ICF to define the functional status of the lower extremities as an important indicator of the health, activity, and participation of the elderly. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of LEFS (LEFS-T) in older individuals. METHODS: A total of 214 older individuals were included in the stud

Functions, disabilities and perceived health in the first year after total knee arthroplasty; a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In end-stage knee osteoarthritis total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an effective intervention to reduce pain and improve functioning in the majority of patients. However, after TKA some patients still experience pain, loss of function, deficient muscle strength or reduced walking speed. This study systematically assesses patients' functions, disabilities and health before TKA and at short- (3 months) and long-term (12 months) on all International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health domains. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study 150 patients underwent the followi…

Lived and Care Experiences of Chronic Musculoskeletal Shoulder Pain in Australian Adults: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Australian evidence on lived and care experiences of chronic musculoskeletal shoulder pain (CMSP), irrespective of disorder classification or disease, is limited. However, such evidence is important for person-centered care and informing local service pathways and care guidelines or standards. To address this gap, we explored the lived experiences of adults with CMSP across domains of the International Classification of Function, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, and their care experiences, preferences, and priorities for CMSP. METHODS: This was a qualitative study that applie

Re-Examining the Dimensionality of a Disability Assessment Tool Using Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM): A Preliminary Study in Low Back Pain.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) profoundly impacts daily life, requiring assessment tools that capture its complex effects on the body and m … ctors which shows how pain and emotions overlap with daily activities. These results align with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and reflect LBP's broad impact. Conclusions: ESEM offers a broader understanding of LBP's multidimensional nature compared with CFA, guiding clinicians to create a holistic management approach that address physical and psychosocial challenges. …

Understanding the participation outcomes for persons with disability when partnered with assistance dogs: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Assistance dogs are trained to support persons living with disability and mitigate limitations that hinder their participation in everyday activities. Despite participation being a frequent challenge for people with disabilities, evidence linking assistance dog provision to improved participation outcomes is underdeveloped. This scoping review aimed to improve understanding by mapping the participation outcomes claimed in research on assistance dogs using the International Classification of Functioning (ICF), Disability and Health framework. METHODS: Using the Arksey and O'Malle

[Scales and tests in the rehabilitation and treatment of patients with spasticity of the lower limbs].

The problem-oriented approach in the rehabilitation of patients with spasticity requires careful assessment of the situation in the concept of The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF): impairment of the structure, functions and limitation of activity in specific environmental factors. Standardized tools in the assessment of muscle tone allow to get objective data about motor function. The use of the Modified Ashworth scale (MAS) and the Tardieu Scale are discussed. The standardized assessment of independent mobility is an important issue in outcome measuring…

Effects of Botulinum Toxin Treatment in Nonambulatory Children and Adolescents With Cerebral Palsy: Understanding Parents' Perspectives.

Children and adolescents with cerebral palsy often receive botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) to manage hypertonia. This qualitative study aimed to describe and categorize BoNT-A effects that parents observed using the WHO's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. An interpretive description methodology was used; semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 parents of nonambulatory young people with cerebral palsy (mean age 10.2 years, SD 3.9, 7 males) who received BoNT-A. Parents reported BoNT-A effects on each ICF category. Through interpretive descri…

Changes in disability levels among older adults experiencing adverse events in postacute rehabilitation care: a prospective observational study.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between adverse events (AEs) and changes in the levels of disability from admission to discharge during inpatient rehabilitation programs. A prospective cohort study was conducted among a cohort of inpatients (216 older adults) admitted to a rehabilitation unit. The occurrences of any AE were reported. The level of disability regarding mobility activities was estimated using the disability qualifiers from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. Changes in the levels of disability between admission and discharge were a

Development of a health index in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (ASAS HI): final result of a global initiative based on the ICF guided by ASAS.

OBJECTIVES: The burden of disease in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can be considerable. However, no agreement has been reached among expert members of Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) to define severity of AS. Based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), a core set of items for AS has been selected to represent the entire spectrum of possible problems in functioning. Based on this, the objective of this study was to develop a tool to quantify health in AS, the ASAS Health Index. METHODS: First, based on a litera…
