Three years after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, numerous epidemiological studies confirm its significant psychological impact. Recent meta-analyses with 50,000-70000 participants noted the increase in anxiety, depression and feelings of loneliness in the general population.1 Patients with pre-existing mental disorders were a vulnerable group at high risk of deterioration.1,2 As part of the measures to combat the pandemic, the operation of mental health services was reduced, the access to them became more difficult and the provision of supportive and psychotherapeutic interventions continu

Interpersonal therapy (IPT) has been identified as an effective treatment for bulimia nervosa that does not focus on bulimic symptoms. Rather, a detailed assessment culminating in an "interpersonal inventory" identifies core associated interpersonal problem(s) that become the focus of treatment. For that reason, IPT may be particularly helpful for clients who have become "stuck" in their eating disorder for reasons associated with problematic relationships. IPT is also helpful for clients who may benefit from a therapy that offers some structure, focus, and containment without clear behavioral

BACKGROUND: The long-term efficacy of psychological treatments for binge eating disorder remains largely unknown.
AIMS: To examine the long-term efficacy of out-patient group cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for binge eating disorder and to analyse predictors of long-term non-response.
METHOD: Ninety people with binge eating disorder were assessed 4 years after treatment cessation within a randomised trial (trial registration: NCT01208272).
RESULTS: Participants showed substantial long-term recovery, partial remission, clinically significant im

This study evaluated the psychiatric symptoms, psychosocial problems, and treatment response of personality-disordered substance abusers receiving services within a homeless drop-in center. Fifty-two homeless clients were assessed after program admission and randomly assigned to receive either individual psychotherapy focused on personality disorder and substance abuse relapse prevention (dual-focus schema therapy [DFST]) or standard group substance abuse counseling (SAC). Client functioning was assessed using measures of personality disorder, psychiatric symptoms, early maladaptive schemas, i

A high prevalence of psychiatric illness exists in persons with mental retardation. Among children with mild to moderate retardation, psychiatric illnesses resemble those seen in the general population. Major affective disorders, ADHD, and conduct disorder are common and respond to the same interventions used in children without mental retardation. Persons with severe to profound retardation are more likely to engage in stereotypies and self-injurious behaviors. In addition, certain specific syndromes associated with mental retardation present with particular neurocognitive, behavioral, and ps

In person impression formation, target characteristics such as suitability for a vacant position or interpersonal likeability are inferred from information samples. This process strongly depends on the diagnosticity of observed (i.e., sampled) behaviors. Applying a likelihood-based conceptualization of diagnosticity, we tested two major implications: First, diagnosticity depends on the hypothesis being tested, and second, it is shaped by situational base-rates. We examined both facets by manipulating the extent of positive versus negative valence within the big two (agency vs. communion). In E

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders worldwide. Dysthymia, a long-lasting form of depressive disorder that is also known as persistent depressive disorder (PDD) with pure dysthymic syndrome according to the Diagnostical and Statical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), is characterised by being difficult to treat. The most prominent therapeutic approaches in treating dysthymia are pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, but recent studies also demonstrate the success of neurofeedback in treating individuals with depressive disorders. However, infra-low-frequency (ILF) neurofeedback,

Over the past 40 years, Japan has spread a definite condition: hikikomori. The term derives from hiku, "pull back", and komoru, "island", and describes a form of voluntary social withdrawal that involves adolescents. These subjects avoid social commitment, school education and friendships with an associated digital dependence. The causes identified depend on a cultural/educational and family system in which individual identity is subordinated to social identity, causing isolation. Early identification of hikikomori and above all its differentiation from other syndromes appears necessary to avo

Manifestations of chronic shock and annihilation anxiety-including autistic defenses, chaotic relationships, disorganized attachment, split-off affective states, and vulnerability to disintegration--exist side by side with apparent ego strength and high functioning, even in nonabused patients. Chronic shock stemming from uncontained distress and failed dependency during childhood can persist throughout the lifespan, creating ripples of dysfunction that mask as character distortion and contribute to therapeutic impasse. Patients rely on omnipotent defenses to provide a sense of "having skin" in

We describe a case of Wilson's disease with late psychiatric onset. Major depressive disorder was the first clinical manifestation at the age of 38 years. After pharmacotherapy with antidepressive agents, a manic episode was observed. Extrapyramidal hand tremor and micrography were the first neurological signs. Emotional lability occurred during worsening of extrapyramidal signs. Diagnosis was based on urinary and serum copper levels, ceruloplasmin serum level, Kayser-Fleischer ring, and liver biopsy that detected cirrhosis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed basal ganglia hyperintensity on T

Controlled studies have established manual-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line treatment of choice for bulimia nervosa. Nevertheless, its effectiveness is limited. On average, only 50% of patients cease being eating and purging. Of the remainder, some show partial improvement, whereas a small number derive no benefit at all. In treating nonresponders to CBT one option would be to use antidepressant medication. A second would be to adopt interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), an alternative psychological therapy with empirical support. However, both options have failed to red

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an often chronic and disabling mental disorder. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and serotonin-reuptake inhibitors and their combination are first-line treatments. However, about 50% of the patients do not achieve response or remission, although many patients received additional pharmacotherapy. These results highlight the need for additional evidence-based treatment options.
METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial (RCT), a manual-guided method of short-term psychodynamic therapy (STPP) for OCD was tested against a waiting list condition. Thi

CONTEXT: Empirical researches have proved that there are powerful correlations between dependent personality and depression. Different hypotheses were described to conceptualize links between these two entities. The dysfunction of attributive style seems to be linked to dependency and to depression. Interpersonal dependency can be considered to be a mode of adaptation to the external direction of the locus of control. The self-esteem so subjected to the climate of social interactions can lead, by the discontinuity of its protective relations, to the depression. In a coordinated model, this stu

BACKGROUND: 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy (MDMA-AP) has demonstrated considerable efficacy in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD and complex PTSD (CPTSD) frequently co-occur with borderline personality disorder (BPD), a complex disorder marked by emotional dysregulation, interpersonal difficulties and abandonment fears - often accompanied by suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury. While MDMA-AP is beneficial for PTSD and hypothesised to be effective for BPD, its application to CPTSD and BPD has not been systematically reviewed.

ABSTRACTBackground: Ample studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, large individual variation in treatment outcome remains unsolved and treatment options for complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) are debated. There is a need for exploring methods for matching patients with treatment they will most likely benefit from. Objective: To develop a personalized advantage index (PAI) based on relevant clinical and demographic predictors of outcome from exposure therapy and skills-training for CPTSD.Method: Data from a previo

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) was developed to empower patients with mood disorders by stabilizing underlying disturbances in circadian rhythms and by using strategies from interpersonal psychotherapy. Group IPSRT has not been studied with a transdiagnostic sample of patients across the life span with either major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder.
METHODS: Thirty-eight outpatients, ages 26-80, with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder in any mood state were recruited from clinics in the Netherlands and were treated with 20 sessions (two per week) o

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review maps psychological and psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptoms in children and adolescents who continue to live within war- or armed conflict–affected zones. We sought to identify which approaches are specifically designed for depressive symptoms, how they are delivered in humanitarian contexts, and where robust evidence is still lacking. RECENT FINDINGS: Twenty-one studies published between 2005 and 2025 were identified across diverse settings including Palestine, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, and Northern Uganda. Most interven

Maternal depression is one of the most common prenatal complications, and prenatal maternal depression predicts many child psychopathologies. Here, we apply the fetal programming hypothesis as an organizational framework to address the possibility that fetal exposure to maternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy affects fetal development of vulnerabilities and risk mechanisms, which enhance risk for subsequent psychopathology. We consider four candidate pathways through which maternal prenatal depression may affect the propensity of offspring to develop later psychopathology across the life

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Several gene variants have been related to major depressive disorder (MDD) treatment outcomes; however, few studies have investigated a possible different effect on pharmacotherapy and brief psychotherapy response.
METHODS: A total of 137 MDD patients were randomized to either interpersonal counseling (IPC; n = 40) or antidepressant pharmacological treatment (n = 97). Outcomes were remission, response, and symptom improvement at week 8. Five genetic variants were investigated (5HTR2A rs6314, BDNF rs6265, SLC6A4 rs8076005, CREB1 rs2253206, and TPH2 rs11179023) as pos
