We report 4 cases of the rare condition, congenital colonic atresia, presenting over 9 years. Two patients had dilated loops of bowel noted on routine ante-natal ultrasound. Three had primary anastomosis for lesions in transverse or distal descending colon and one had a staged procedure with colostomy formation. All had type III atresia. One patient had an early leak following primary colo-colic anastomosis for atresia extending from the hepatic flexure to the sigmoid colon. If it is desired to preserve the proximal colon in a right sided lesion with significant loss of colonic length then pri

Intussusception commonly affects children in the first year of life but it may rarely also appear in utero. We report a newborn with delayed passing of meconium, repeated vomiting, and abdominal distension in the first week of life. After radiological diagnosis of a small bowel obstruction, the newborn underwent an exploratory laparotomy where an ileal atresia proximal to an intussusception was found. After resection of the affected bowel, an end-to-end anastomosis was possible. The postoperative period was uneventful. This case shows that intrauterine intussusception can be a rare cause for i

AIM: To study the histology of resected specimens of jejunoileal atresia (JIA) and to explore its probable therapeutic implications.
METHODS: Biopsies were taken from the resected specimens of 32 patients of JIA. Sections were taken at the atretic ends and successively at every 5 cm in resected proximal bowel. They were stained for light microscopy and immunohistochemistry for CD117 (Interstitial cell of Cajal), α smooth muscle antibody (SMA), neuron filament protein (NFP) and calretinin. Histological findings on light microscopy and immune reactivity intensity for NFP, calretinin and α-SMA w

In the past 15 years five neonates and children have been treated for high vaginal atresia at the Surgical Unit of Department of Pediatrics, University Medical School, Pécs, Hungary. In three of the six patients distal atresia of the vagina was found (Type III). Two of the three were neonates and had a large hydrometrocolpos and the third, a 13-year-old girl, hematometrocolpos. In the fourth patient the vaginal atresia was associated with cloacal and anorectal malformation (Type V). In the fifth there was a duplication of uterus and vagina; however, only one of the two vaginas was atretic. In

PURPOSE: I introduce the use of transanal intestinal long tube (TILT) using nasogastric tube. TILT passes from anus to the anastomosis, helping to decompress a dilated bowel loop.
METHODS: TILT procedure was limited to those patients predicting a severe luminal size discrepancy after intestinal anastomosis, and who had postoperative prolonged ileus. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 10 infants (7 male an 3 female patients) who were treated using the TILT procedure between 2012 and 2016.
RESULTS: Median gestational age was 27+5 weeks and birth weight was 940 g. The first oper

BACKGROUND: In patients with intestinal atresia, associated congenital anomalies and prematurity are the main predictors of mortality in high-income countries (HIC). In low-and middle-income countries (LMIC), late referrals and lack of resources contribute to mortality. This study aims to describe the outcome of small bowel atresia at a tertiary institution in a LMIC.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive and analytical study was done on all neonates admitted with small bowel atresia from 1 January 2010 to 31 October 2016. Birth demographics, status on arrival, atresia type, surgical intervent…

BACKGROUND: The early diagnosis of surgical jaundice in a neonate is an important step for the surgical success in extrahepatic biliary atresia. Diagnostic laparoscopy, as in many areas in surgery, is included in the conventional diagnostic methods of extrahepatic biliary atresia.
METHODS: Since 1992, 24 infants with prolonged jaundice, in whom extrahepatic biliary atresia and neonatal hepatitis could not be differentiated with conventional diagnostic interventions, have been evaluated laparoscopically.
RESULTS: A coarse, irregular, greenish-brown liver with some degree of fine angiomatous d

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the most common cause of intestinal failure in infants. In neonates and young infants, necrotizing enterocolitis, gastroschisis, intestinal atresia, and intestinal malrotation/volvulus are the leading causes of SBS. Following an acute postsurgical phase, the residual gastrointestinal tract adapts with reorganization of the crypt-villus histoarchitecture and functional changes in nutrient absorption and motility. A cohesive, multidisciplinary approach can allow most neonates with SBS to transition to full enteral feeds and achieve normal growth and development. In …

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Biliary atresia is the most common cause of liver disease and liver transplantation in children. The accumulation of bile acids in hepatocytes and the stimulation of the intestinal microbiome can aggravate the disease progression. This study investigated changes in the composition of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in biliary atresia and the possible effects of these changes on disease progression.
METHODS: Stool samples of biliary atresia at different disease stages and matched control individuals were collected (early stage: 16 patients, 16 controls; later stage:

Objective: Pyloric atresia is one of the rarest surgical diseases in newborns. Laparotomy is the most common approach to correct this abnormality. In the modern scientific literature, there is only one report on the endosurgical treatment of pyloric atresia. The case of laparoscopic correction of gastric outlet atresia presented in this study is another reference to the successful treatment of this condition. Methods: The clinical case is presented by a newborn boy in whom a prenatal ultrasound (US) examination at 31 weeks of gestation revealed polyhydramnios and an enlarged stomach. The baby

Polysplenia is a congenital disorder affecting the asymmetric organs, including the heart, lungs, bronchi, liver, stomach, pancreas, intestines, and spleen. Primary manifestations are heterogeneous and can include congenital heart disease, atypical placement of major abdominal organs, biliary atresia, and intestinal malrotation. Knowledge of these congenital abnormalities will enhance patient care. In this report, we present an elderly, asymptomatic individual with polysplenia to highlight the cardinal features and management issues.

We report on a patient with a lethal multiple pterygium syndrome who also had an unusual, bandlike web across one axilla and partial intestinal atresia. Umbilical cord wrapping with subsequent vascular compromise appears to be the most likely pathogenetic mechanism for the additional anomalies.

Chyloperitoneum is rare condition that can occur in response to various pathologic process. The authors described a newborn baby who had chyloperitoneum after primary surgical repair of esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (Gross type C). This probably resulted from iatrogenic damage of the thoracic duct during ligation of azygous vein resulting in leaking lacteal within the intestinal wall. Biochemical analysis of ascitic fluid, plasma, and milk formula for triglyceride and cholesterol level can differentiate neonatal gastric intestinal perforation.
