[Intestinal transplantation. The first Swedish transplantation of the small intestine in an adult patient with pseudoobstruction].

Recent advances, first and foremost the development of new immunosuppressive agents, have markedly improved the outcome of intestinal transplantation, which is a treatment option for patients with serious intestinal diseases who have become dependent on total parenteral nutrition. The first small bowel transplantation in Sweden was performed at Huddinge Hospital in 1997, in the adult patient with intestinal pseudo-obstruction. The article reports the course of this patient and an update of international progress in intestinal transplantation.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: another medical cause of acute abdomen.

We present a patient with neuroleptic malignant syndrome and intestinal pseudo-obstruction misdiagnosed as being secondary to septicaemia. The management of the patient is discussed with emphasis on the role of creatine kinase and liver function tests.

[Celiac disease as a cause for occlusion of the small intestine].

We report the case of a 13 month old boy presenting with an intestinal pseudo-obstruction. He showed the clinical and radiological features typical of a paralytic intestinal occlusion. After 48 hours of parenteral nutrition, the intestinal motility returned to normal. A jejunal biopsy showed total villous atrophy. The patient did not relapse with the same symptoms on a gluten challenge. The differential diagnosis and the similarities with obstructive events in cow's milk protein sensitive enteropathy are discussed.

Megaesophagus and Megaduodenum Found Incidentally on a Routine Chest Radiograph During a Health Examination.

Chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIIP) caused by impaired intestinal peristalsis leads to intestinal obstructive symptoms. A 20-year-old man had marked esophageal dilatation that was found incidentally on chest radiography during a health examination. Chest/abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography and endoscopy showed marked esophageal and duodenal dilatation without mechanical obstruction. Upper gastrointestinal series and high-resolution esophageal manometry revealed absent peristalsis in the dilated part. CIIP was suspected in the patient's father, suggesting familia…

Ear Mites as an Overlooked Source of Ear Itching and Tinnitus - A Case Series.

UNLABELLED: MELAS - an acronym for mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes - is a multiorgan disease caused by a mutation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Its clinical manifestations are highly variable; mainly stroke-like episodes, seizures, recurrent headaches, or muscle weakness. However, gastrointestinal complications such as chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (IPO), pancreatitis, gastroparesis and hepatopathy are also common. In this report we describe a young patient with gastrointestinal complication of MELAS which led to superior mesenteric artery synd…

Ogilvie Syndrome in a Refractory Germ Cell Tumor Treated with Vinblastine, Ifosfamide and Cisplatin Regimen.

Ogilvie syndrome or intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a clinical syndrome characterized by autonomic imbalance affecting peristalsis of colon leading to obstructive signs and symptoms. The etiologies commonly implicated are drugs affecting the cholinergic system, narcotics, electrolyte imbalance, severe sepsis, cancer, major surgery, and renal and cardiac failure. Ogilvie syndrome secondary to chemotherapy is a very rare phenomenon with very few reports in the literature. Cisplatin-induced neuropathy has been reported to occur when the cumulative dose exceeds 360 mg/m2. It manifests predominant…

Multiple intestinal stenoses and peripheral gangrene: a combination of two rare surgical complications in a child with Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease (KD) often presents with a challenging variety of clinical symptoms. Severe gastrointestinal complications are rare and mainly appear as pseudo-obstruction. However, the authors report the unique case of a 4-month-old girl with KD suffering from a mechanical ileus. The optimal timing of surgery presented a dilemma, because she received lytic treatment for gangrenes of both her hands and feet and additionally had large coronary artery aneurysms. Finally laparotomy had to be performed while the patient was on an anticoagulant medication, and it showed a 30-cm-long jejunal segmen

Molecular and Cellular Characteristics of the Colonic Pseudo-obstruction in Patients With Intractable Constipation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms suggestive of obstruction such as abdominal pain, proximal distension with extremely suppressed motility in the absence of lumen-occluding lesion, whose etiology/ pathophysiology is poorly understood. In this study we investigated a functionally obstructive lesion that could underlie symptoms of CIPO. METHODS: We studied colons surgically removed from 13 patients exhibiting clinical/pathological features of pseudo-obstruction but were unresponsive to standard medical treatments. The…

Bowel pseudo-obstruction caused by goblet cell adenocarcinoma of the appendix: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Goblet cell adenocarcinoma of the appendix is a rare diagnosis with features of both adenocarcinomas and carcinoid tumors. Commonly presenting with chronic abdominal pain, appendicitis, or abdominal distention, it can also be incidentally discovered during appendectomies. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man with right lower abdominal pain was admitted to our hospital, which is a critical care center. A computed tomography(CT) scan showed ileal narrowing, but endoscopy found no strictures. He was admitted with suspected bowel obstruction and improved with an ileal tube. Laparosc

[Rare severe complications of pediatric nephrolithiasis in high-altitude areas: a case of paralytic ileus secondary to renal abscess rupture].

Urinary tract stones complicated by infection are relatively common, whereas renal abscess rupture complicated by paralytic ileus is extremely rare. On March 1, 2025, a 22-month-old boy was admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Lhasa People's Hospital. He presented with secondary paralytic ileus resulting from renal abscess rupture secondary to nephrolithiasis. The patient was hospitalized with a 10-day history of cough, expectoration, abdominal pain and distension. Given severe abdominal distension and intestinal obstruction, emergency small bowel decompression and abdominal abscess drain

Application of the Malone antegrade continence enema principle in degenerative leiomyopathy.

An 1-year-old boy with degenerative leiomyopathy (DL) presented with a volvulus of the transverse colon. After derotating the volvulus, we constructed a tube colostomy (TC) from the transverse colon. This TC has been used for the past 2 years by the patient for regular deflation of the colon and antegrade colonic enemas (ACE). We present this as a preliminary report of the use of the Malone ACE procedure in a patient with DL and review the relevant literature.
