In our department, hepatorenal syndrome was highly associated with obstructive jaundice and was seen in 9.2 percent of patients with obstructive jaundice. This syndrome developed when in underlying hepatic disease, acute renal failure supervened. Histological findings of renal failure caused by obstructive jaundice were summarized as tubular necrosis and the presence of protein-like substance in the glomerulus, which were mostly reversible and similar to those seen in shock. To investigate the pathogenesis of hepatorenal syndrome, experimentally the common duct in dog was ligated to produce ob

Yinchenhao Decoction (YCHD) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula composed of three botanical drugs: Artemisia capillaris Thunb, Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, and Rheum palmatum L. In modern research, it has demonstrated promising therapeutic effects against various diseases, including obstructive jaundice (OJ), hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatic carcinoma. From the perspective of TCM theory, YCHD possesses the properties of clearing heat and detoxifying as well as promoting diuresis to resolve jaundice, and is commonly used for the treatment of "damp-heat type" jaundice,

Percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) is an alternative to percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) for cases with obstructive jaundice in which the bile duct obstruction is below the confluence of the cystic ducts. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of PTGBD and PTBD in patients with obstructive jaundice. We recruited patients who had undergone percutaneous biliary drainage for acute cholangitis and obstructive jaundice at two institutions between January 2017 and March 2024. In principle, PTBD was the first choice. PTGBD was selected for cases

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy with intraoperative cholangiogram is commonly performed, especially when there is suspicion of choledocholithiasis. We present a case of acute pancreatitis post-procedure for management of acute cholecystitis and suspicion of distal common bile duct sludge, potentially caused by the dislodgement of microlithiasis, which resolved on its own with supportive management. This case emphasizes the need to consider acute pancreatitis as a rare but possible post-cholecystectomy complication in a patient who continues to be unwell post-operatively.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the extrahepatic bile duct are extremely rare and reported infrequently in the literature. These tumors are difficult to diagnose preoperatively, and the prognosis is variable, often determined by extent of disease, tumor grade and resectability. This case report presents a 45-year-old male with history of biliary obstruction relieved by endobiliary stents with common hepatic duct stricture just above the cystic duct, thought to be a Klatskin's cholangiocarcinoma. Final pathological examination was consistent with primary extrahepatic NET.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to study whether color difference in facial color truly exists between neonates with obstructive and nonobstructive jaundice, and whether the color difference could be objectified by spectrophotometer.
METHODS: Twelve biliary atresia patients were enrolled in an obstructive jaundice group and 15 neonates admitted for non-conjugated hyperbilirubinemia in a nonobstructive group. Nine patients with syphilis (n=6) and sacrococcygeal teratoma (n=3) were studied as control. Transcutaneous total bilirubin (TB) and hemoglobin were recorded. Face color was measur

The article analyzed the results of surgical treatment of 137 patients with obstructive jaundice of benign genesis. An immune status was studied in serum in dynamics before surgery. The rates of CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, Ig A, M, G were determined on the first, third, seventh and fourteenth days after operation. The levels of TNFα, IFNγ, IL-2, IL-6, IL-4, IL-10 were investigated in serum and at the same time TNFα, IL-4, IL-6 were noted in the bile duct and IL-6 - in urine. Obstructive jaundice of cholelithiс genesis is characterized by disbalance of immune and cytokine status. The depth of disbalan

Together with biliary drainage, which is an appropriate procedure for unresectable biliary cancer, biliary stent placement is used to improve symptoms associated with jaundice. Owing to investigations comparing percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD), surgical drainage, and endoscopic drainage, many types of stents are now available that can be placed endoscopically. The stents used are classified roughly as plastic stents and metal stents. Compared with plastic stents, metal stents are of large diameter, and have long-term patency (although they are expensive). For this reason, the

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of bombesin (BBS) and neurotensin (NT) on intestinal histopathology, intestinal oxidative stress, and endotoxemia in experimental obstructive jaundice.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Obstructive jaundice compromises gut barrier function, resulting in endotoxemia. BBS and NT, exerting various biologic actions on gastrointestinal tissues, preserve gut mucosal integrity in cases of injury or atrophy.
METHODS: Seventy male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: I = controls, II = sham operated, III = bile duct ligation (BDL), IV = BDL + BBS (30 microg/kg/d),

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hepatocellular carcinoma presenting as obstructive jaundice caused by floating tumor debris in the common bile duct is rare. We report choledochoscopic findings in this rare condition.
METHODOLOGY: From January 1981 to December 1995, 28 patients received surgical treatment for obstructive jaundice secondary to hepatocellular carcinoma rupture into the common bile duct. Among them, intra-operative choledochoscopy was performed in 18 patients.
RESULTS: Choledochoscopic findings revealed tumor thrombus and an intraluminal yellowish nodular mass in all patients, blood clots in t

BACKGROUND: Precut papillotomy enhances the success of selective bile duct cannulation. Doubts have been raised about the relative safety of the procedure. This study was undertaken to assess the success rate and complications of precut papillotomy using a needle knife.
METHODS: 100 consecutive patients undergoing precut papillotomy for biliary endoprosthesis placement were studied. A needle knife was used in these patients after bile duct cannulation was not successful using other techniques. The success rate, complications and mortality were determined.
RESULTS: Selective bile duct cannula

We report the use of a nasobiliary catheter in the management of a 55-yr-old female with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease who developed obstructive jaundice from a hepatic cyst. The patient presented with a 2-wk history of fatigue, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Physical examination was remarkable for tender hepatomegaly. Computerized tomography revealed multiple hepatic cysts and dilated intrahepatic biliary radicles. Endoscopic stent placement failed to relieve the obstruction. Computerized tomography guided percutaneous aspiration of the obstructing hepatic cyst

Results of surgical and endoscopic treatment in 79 patients (58 females and 21 males, age 40-89, mean 62), affected with jaundice, due to secondary choledochal lithiasis, are reported. Thirty-four patients (43%) underwent surgical operation: choledochotomy and T-tube 12, choledocho-jejunostomy 4, choledochoduodenostomy 3, papillosphincteroplasty 15. In 45 patients (57%) EST has been performed. Comparison of results has been obtained after 30 days and after 3-105 months (mean 49). Optimal results have been achieved in 94.9% of patients: 100% after surgery and 94.1% after EST. Morbidity and mort
