Effect of controlled burning on survival of floodwater Aedes eggs in Kenya.

The effect of controlled burning on the survival of Aedes mosquito eggs was evaluated in 2 distinct dambo habitats. In a dambo dominated by grasses, egg survival was 3.3% after burning compared with 43.8% in a similar dambo that was not burned. In a dambo dominated by sedges, egg survival was 0.7% after burning compared with 28.5% in a similar dambo that was not burned. Mortality of mosquito eggs appeared to be caused by high temperatures associated with the fire and not elapsed time since egg survival did not decrease with time after burning. The potential for burning to control the mosquito

Failure of chemoprophylaxis against bovine trypanosomiasis on Galana Ranch in Kenya.

The duration of prophylaxis provided by 1 mg kg-1 bodyweight of homidium bromide was compared with that provided by 1 mg kg-1 bodyweight of isometamidium chloride in a 12 month field trial involving 90 Boran cattle exposed to trypanosome challenge on Galana Ranch in Kenya. Weekly trypanosome prevalences of over 30% were observed during 4 of the 12 months. During these periods of heavy challenge, parasites were detected 2-3 weeks after administration of both homidium bromide and isometamidium chloride. Both prophylactic drugs were administered, on a group basis, eight times over the 12 month tr…

Comparative aetiology of childhood diarrhoea in Kakamega and Kiambu Districts, Kenya.

Two hundred diarrhoea specimens collected during January to February 1988, from rural children aged 0 to 60 months in Kakamega District were examined for bacteria, parasites and rotavirus. The results were compared with a sample of 184 diarrhoea specimens matched for month of collection, taken from data collected in the same manner from children in Kiambu District. The mean ages of children in the 2 samples did not differ significantly. There were significant differences in the prevalence of specific potential pathogens isolated in the 2 areas. Notably, A. lumbricoides and rotavirus were more

Efficacy of metrifonate in a highly endemic area of urinary schistosomiasis in Kenya.

In a community in Kwale district, Kenya, selective mass chemotherapy with metrifonate caused a marked reduction in the intensity of Schistosoma haematobium infection from 46.5 to 9.4 eggs/hr and a sharp fall in prevalence of gross hematuria from 18.3% to 5.1%, although overall prevalence was reduced only slightly from 67.4% to 54%. The effect of metrifonate on cure rate and reduction of infection intensity was limited by both age and pretreatment infection intensity. Rate of improvement from gross hematuria was similar in all ages and in all classes of intensity of infection. Two doses of metr…

The sensitivity to trypanocidal drugs of Trypanosoma vivax isolated in Kenya and Somalia.

The drug sensitivity of seven Trypanosoma vivax-isolates from Kenya and Somalia was examined. With the exception of diminazene aceturate all commercially available trypanocidal drugs failed to effect a cure. The results suggest the existence of multiple drug resistance of T. vivax-strains, geographically widely distributed along the East African Coast. The isolates were resistant to the recommended dose rates of isometamidium, homidium and quinapyramine. Isometamidium showed no prophylactic properties when tested against one of the isolates. All were sensitive to diminazene aceturate.

Quantification of antimicrobial use in semi-intensive broiler farms in Kenya.

The rapid global expansion of poultry production has intensified antimicrobial use (AMU) and emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Understanding patterns, timing, and quantities of AMU is essential for designing effective stewardship strategies. This study quantified AMU in semi-intensive broiler farms in Kenya using three complementary categories of metrics. Data were collected longitudinally from 73 farms across 310 production cycles over 10 months. Farmers recorded daily flock size and antibiotic administration using a standardized farm recording forms, and medicine packaging waste b…

Effect of housing insecurity on dermatological conditions among PLHIV in Kenya.

Dermatological conditions are a leading cause of non-fatal disability globally and are highly prevalent among people living with HIV (PLHIV) … re drawn from the Resource Insecurity, Health and Sustainable Livelihoods Study focused on PLHIV in Kenya (N = 1132). Following descriptive and bivariate analyses, logistic regression using the complementary log-log link function was employed to assess the effect of housing insecurity on different skin conditions. Of the 1132 PLHIV, 16.2% reported havin …

Impacts of contemporaneous air pollution exposure on cognitive performance in Kenya.

We estimate the short-term cognitive effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure using novel exposure data collected during cognitive testing in Kenya. Unlike most existing studies that rely on satellite-based or fixed monitoring station data, we measure highly localized ambient pollution using portable monitors deployed at cognitive testing sites and link these readings directly to Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) scores. Higher PM2.5 exposure during testing is associated with lower cognitive performance, particularly in executive function, memory, and visuospatial task…

Translation and evaluation of the Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale in Kenya and Uganda.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Stillbirth or neonatal death are distressing life experiences for parents. In many sub-Saharan African countries, bereavement care and support are inadequate. Context-appropriate interventions are needed to improve perinatal bereavement care. To assess whether these interventions work, reliable assessment tools are required. This study aimed to translate and evaluate the Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale [PGIS] for use among bereaved women in Kenya and Uganda. METHODS: A mixed-methods study, involving cross cultural translation, adaptation and psychometric evaluation in Keny…

The current state of oncological emergency services in Kenya: challenges and opportunities.

Cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Kenya, with the healthcare system increasingly challenged by oncologic emergencies (OEs)-acute, life-threatening complications that require immediate intervention. Although Kenya has advanced in decentralising cancer care through regional centres and expanding access to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and palliative care, a critical gap persists in the recognition and management of OEs. Conditions such as spinal cord compression, febrile neutropenia, tumour lysis syndrome and superior vena cava obstruction are common but often underdiagno…

Epidemiological investigative report on ocular morbidity in children in rural Kenya.

AIM: To ascertain the pattern of ocular morbidity in a population of primary school children in rural Kenya as it is a prerequisite for planning effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of ocular symptoms and clinical eye examinations were performed in a sample of 35 rural primary schools in the semi-arid region of Kajiado West sub-county in S.W. Kenya, amongst a semi-nomadic tribe (Maasai). Students in Grades 1-8 were included. Visual acuity was measured using the Snellen "tumbling E" chart at 6 m. Children with symptoms of refractive error underwent…

Hustling and suffering: Male sex workers and HIV interventions in Kenya.

Participating in and working for HIV interventions is both a source of both pride and suffering for many men who have sex with men (MSM) who engage in low-paying sex work in Kenya. Drawing on ongoing intermittent ethnographic research conducted among MSM sex workers since 2010, we analyse the relationship between hope and resilience on one hand, and narratives of suffering and hustling on the other. We show how HIV technologies that provide spaces for visibility and mobilising, such as new treatment regimes, accompanying support groups and training programmes, as well as activist led organisat…

Integrated Surveillance for Human and Animal Brucellosis in Kenya: A Predictive Analysis.

Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease which poses a significant public health challenge globally. In Kenya, it is a priority zoonosis, causing morbidity and losses in humans and animals. Here, we used monthly surveillance data from 2014 to 2022 from the official human and animal health surveillance databases. We conducted spatiotemporal analysis, tested associations between human and animal brucellosis using Time Series Linear Models, and forecasted the incidence of human brucellosis for twelve months using Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) models. Our analysis r…
