The effects of acidic and nonacidic pyrazoles on the release of arachidonic acid-derived mediators from isolated perfused anaphylactic guinea pig hearts as well as rat and human gastric mucosa were investigated. High concentrations of the acidic drugs phenylbutazone and oxyphenbutazone as well as of the nonacidic metabolites of metamizol, i.e. 4-methylaminoantipyrine and 4-aminoantipyrine, inhibited the release of the cyclo-oxygenase products of arachidonic acid metabolism, TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha, and simultaneously increased the release of LTC4-like immunoreactivity in hearts. A monoprotected amino acid Bz-Gly-OH assists in the allylic alkylation of a variety of ketones, β-keto esters, aldehydes, etc., during enamine-palladium catalysis. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Bz-Gly-OH assists in the formation of an enamine that attacks the π-allylpalladium complex via an outer sphere mechanism. The preliminary result points to an asymmetric allylic alkylation under a new mode of bifunctional catalysis.

Singlet-oxygen oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was performed in continuous flow mode using rose Bengal as photosensitizer. The resulting butenolide (H(2) MF) was formed selectively in high yield. The procedure proved to be scalable and applicable to related bio-based furfurals. Furthermore, preliminary data show that H(2) MF can be readily isomerized thermally to 5-hydroxy-4-keto-pentenoic acid oligomers.

The alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase complex and its component enzymes, lactate dehydrogenase, pyruvate carboxylase, cytochrome c oxidase, succinate-cytochrome c reductase, NADH-cytochrome c reductase, and the concentration of cytochromes and enzymes of beta-oxidation in muscle from a patient with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes were studied and no specific defect was found. These results raise the possibility that the mitochondrial changes in the patient may be secondary.
