Estimated exposure to mercury from fish consumption among women anglers of childbearing age in the Great Lakes region.

Women of childbearing age (WCBA) are advised by state, tribal, and federal agencies to limit their consumption of certain fish, in part, because of concerns about the ingestion of methylmercury and its impact on the development of fetuses. We studied the fish-eating habits of WCBA who had a fishing license and lived near the Great Lakes, where mercury in locally-caught fish is a concern, as these women were likely at greater risk of elevated mercury exposure than the general population. We used a web-based diary method to gather fish consumption data from WCBA anglers over a 4-month period in

Assessing trace metal contamination and organic matter in the brackish lakes as the major source of potable water.

On small and medium karstic coastal islands in the Adriatic Sea, brackish lakes are often the only source of freshwater. Therefore, it is important to adequately evaluate the biogeochemical processes occurring in these complex water systems, as well as to determine the origin of contaminants present. In this study, the distribution and origin of trace metals (Tl, Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co) and organic matter in the water column, sediment, and surrounding soil of the brackish lakes on Mljet Island, South Adriatic Sea, Croatia, were evaluated. Thallium and mercury concentrations in the lake wat

A pesticide monitoring survey in rivers and lakes of northern Greece and its human and ecotoxicological risk assessment.

A pesticide monitoring study covering the main rivers and lakes of Northern Greece (Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly) was undertaken. A total of 416 samples were collected over a 1.5-year sampling period (September 1999- February 2001) from six rivers and ten lakes. The water samples were analyzed with an off-line solid phase extraction technique coupled with a gas chromatography ion trap mass spectrometer using an analytical method for 147 pesticides and their metabolites, including organochlorines, organophosphates, triazines, chloroacetanilides, pyrethroids, carbamates, phthalimides and other

Mercury in soils, lakes, and fish in Voyageurs National Park (Minnesota): importance of atmospheric deposition and ecosystem factors.

Concentrations of methylmercury in game fish from many interior lakes in Voyageurs National Park (MN, U.S.A.) substantially exceed criteria for the protection of human health. We assessed the importance of atmospheric and geologic sources of mercuryto interior lakes and watersheds within the Park and identified ecosystem factors associated with variation in methylmercury contamination of lacustrine food webs. Geologic sources of mercury were small, based on analyses of underlying bedrock and C-horizon soils, and nearly all mercury in the 0- and A-horizon soils was derived from atmospheric depo

Combined use of diffusive gradients in thin film, high-resolution dialysis technique and traditional methods to assess pollution and bioavailability of sediment metals of lake wetlands in Taihu Lake Basin.

The geochemical behavior of trace metals at the sediment/water interface in Taihu Lake, the third-largest fresh water lake in China, has been widely explored. However, information on metals in lake wetlands of the basin is lacking. Here, diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT), high-resolution dialysis technique (HR-Peeper) and traditional methods were jointly used to study the occurrence characteristics, pollution degree, bioavailability, and mobility of sediment metals in the northern lake wetlands of Jiaxing City in Taihu Lake Basin. The contents of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb were 101, 52

Exposomics: The Effect of Legacy Polychlorinated Biphenyls on the Proteome of Fish Consumers in the Great Lakes Region.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) chemicals considered a "bioaccumulative chemical of concern" targeted by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) that were introduced into the Great Lakes ecosystem long ago. Although the use of PCBs has been banned, they still exist in many ecosystems at dangerously high concentrations, and due to their lipophilic nature, they are able to biomagnify up the food web. Human consumers of fish from areas in the lakes that are highly polluted with PCBs are at risk for a variety of adverse health ef

Emigration of silver eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) from the Great Masurian Lakes complex in the southeastern Baltic region.

Obstacles encountered by downstream migrating European eels during their spawning migration are among the primary causes of their population decline. River regulation and hydrotechnical infrastructure play a crucial role in this process. Fish reaching migration barriers often interrupt their journey, while those passing through hydroelectric turbines frequently suffer fatal injuries. Using acoustic telemetry, the downstream migration of silver eels from a large lake complex in northern Poland was tracked. Along their route, the fish encountered small hydropower plant (SHP) equipped with Kaplan

Heavy Metal Characteristics and Their Association With Microbial Communities of Wetland Soils of Shengjin and Caizi Lakes, China.

Wetland soils are among the ecosystems most vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances, and they play critical roles in biogeochemical cycling and energy exchange. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of heavy metal distribution and microbial community structures in soil samples from Shengjin Lake and Caizi Lake in China. Analysis of soil physicochemical properties revealed a significant difference in soil pH between the two lakes, whereas no significant differences were detected in organic matter content or cation exchange capacity. Soils from Caizi Lake exhibited significantly hi

Water-specific toxicity factor and index for heavy metal risk assessment: application to urban lakes in Chennai, India.

Heavy metals released into aquatic environments disrupt ecological balance. Urban lakes in the Pallikaranai catchment, Chennai, India, face pollution pressures from rapid urbanization. This study introduces a water-specific toxicity factor and toxicity index to assess toxicity risks posed by heavy metals in surface waters to aquatic life. Results revealed considerable variability in in situ water quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, and dissolved oxygen. pH was mostly neutral to alkaline, with some lakes experiencing anoxia while others exceeded 10 mg/L oxygen. Pb and Cu

Hydro-morphometric Stage-Area-Volume thresholds controlling atmospheric moisture feedbacks and environmental water requirements in desiccating saline lakes.

In endorheic basins with arid or semi-arid climates, lakebed geometry fundamentally controls water retention and regional atmospheric moisture feedbacks. However, quantifying these hydro-morphometric interactions to define environmental flow requirements remains challenging due to ambiguities in Stage-Area-Volume (S-A-V) relationships caused by spectral confusion between shallow brines and evaporite crusts. We propose a geometry-driven framework that resolves these limitations by integrating high-resolution bathymetric reconstructions with regional atmospheric moisture dynamics. Multi-decadal

Modeling Photoprotection of Ultraviolet C Radiation by Ferric Ions and Implications for the Habitability of Ancient Martian Lakes.

On Mars, the amount of ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation that reaches the surface is sufficiently deleterious for life as we know it. However, it has been predicted that some ancient lakes on Mars had high concentrations of Fe3+, an ionic species known for a high absorption of UVC radiation. Some models of UV attenuation have already been established; however, there is a lack of reliable simulations that make the connection between this radiation absorption in an aqueous medium and its impact on the viability of microorganisms. This work proposes a simple model to estimate the viability of microor

MeHg production in eutrophic lakes: Focusing on the roles of algal organic matter and iron-sulfur-phosphorus dynamics.

The mechanisms by which eutrophication affects methylmercury (MeHg) production have not been comprehensively summarized, which hinders accurately predicting the MeHg risk in eutrophic lakes. In this review, we first discussed the effects of eutrophication on biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg). Special attentions were paid to the roles of algal organic matter (AOM) and iron (Fe)-sulfur (S)-phosphorus (P) dynamics in MeHg production. Finally, the suggestions for risk control of MeHg in eutrophic lakes were proposed. AOM can affect in situ Hg methylation by stimulating the abundance and activit

Satellites for long-term monitoring of inland U.S. lakes: The MERIS time series and application for chlorophyll-a.

Lakes and other surface fresh waterbodies provide drinking water, recreational and economic opportunities, food, and other critical support for humans, aquatic life, and ecosystem health. Lakes are also productive ecosystems that provide habitats and influence global cycles. Chlorophyll concentration provides a common metric of water quality, and is frequently used as a proxy for lake trophic state. Here, we document the generation and distribution of the complete MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS; Appendix A provides a complete list of abbreviations) radiometric time series for ov

Malacological and Parasitological Surveys on Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes: Implications for Control and Elimination of Snail-Borne Diseases.

Schistosomiasis is one of the snail-borne diseases responsible for the second-highest burden of diseases among neglected tropical diseases. The use of mass drug administration to the populations most at risk is a backbone of the strategy to prevent and control schistosomiasis transmission. However, it offers no protection against re-infection, and humans are often re-exposed when they return to water bodies where snails release cercariae. Surveys on cercarial infection in snails could provide better insights on human disease risk. Hence, in this study, we investigated cercarial infection in sn

The complete genome sequence of Rhodobaca barguzinensis alga05 (DSM 19920) documents its adaptation for life in soda lakes.

Soda lakes, with their high salinity and high pH, pose a very challenging environment for life. Microorganisms living in these harsh conditions have had to adapt their physiology and gene inventory. Therefore, we analyzed the complete genome of the haloalkaliphilic photoheterotrophic bacterium Rhodobaca barguzinensis strain alga05. It consists of a 3,899,419 bp circular chromosome with 3624 predicted coding sequences. In contrast to most of Rhodobacterales, this strain lacks any extrachromosomal elements. To identify the genes responsible for adaptation to high pH, we compared the gene invento

Does human activity impact the natural antibiotic resistance background? Abundance of antibiotic resistance genes in 21 Swiss lakes.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging environmental contaminants, known to be continuously discharged into the aquatic environment via human and animal waste. Freshwater aquatic environments represent potential reservoirs for ARG and potentially allow sewage-derived ARG to persist and spread in the environment. This may create increased opportunities for an eventual contact with, and gene transfer to, human and animal pathogens via the food chain or drinking water. However, assessment of this risk requires a better understanding of the level and variability of the natural resistance
