A 16-year-old girl developed a cough, hypereosinophilia (absolute eosinophil count: 32000/mm3), hypergammaglobulinemia, and multiple noncavitary pulmonary nodules 1 month after having ingested an earthworm on a dare. Spirometry revealed moderate restriction and reduced gas diffusion. Parabronchial biopsy demonstrated eosinophilic organizing pneumonitis with multiple eosinophilic microabscesses, and Toxocara titers were elevated (>1:4096). The aim of this work was to study cross-reactivity in the diagnosis of two related ascaridosis. The inflammatory infiltration cells penetrating through the larval capsule walls were observed. The observation were carried out in the masseter muscle of the mice infected with Trichinella spiralis larvae only (control) or infected and treated with PHA-P, TFX or dexamethason. Extracts of nematodes have been used as skin test antigens in the diagnosis of nematode infections for many years. Ascaris lumbricoides and Toxocara canis are two nematodes commonly involved in human parasitism, the latter being associated with the clinical condition of Visceral Larva Migrans.
