PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dermatoses are one of the three most common healthcare problems in returning travelers. Knowledge of imported dermatoses … ntification of the species allows tailored therapeutic management. Clearer definitions of cutaneous larva migrans, a syndrome, and creeping eruption, a cutaneous sign, have been established lately whereas the term hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans is more widely used to define the corresponding disease. Lastly, chikungunya has emerged as a cause of febri …

Toxocariasis is caused by a series of related nematode species (ascarids) that routinely infect dogs and cats throughout the world. The eggs … e hosts, remains occult, often resulting in disease caused by the migrating larval stages. Visceral larva migrans (VLM) and ocular larva migrans (OLM) are two clinical manifestations that result in definable syndromes and present as serious health problems wherever they occur. Diagnosis and treatment of VLM and OLM are difficult. These issues are summarized in …

Human toxocarosis is a chronic zoonotic disease, which creates various syndromes in humans such as visceral larva migrans, ocular larva migrans, and neurological toxocarosis. This disease is commonly contracted through ingestion of eggs from the Toxocara species. The eggs are transmitted to humans through contact with soil that contaminated with feces of infected animals by Toxocara species worm. This study, investigated the soil from various parks and public areas of Khorramshahr city southwest of Iran for Toxocara egg contamination. One-hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from 21 p…

INTRODUCTION: Dogs harbour zoonotic parasites that cause serious infections in humans, such as visceral larva migrans, ocular larva migrans, cystic echinococcosis, and alveolar echinococcosis. Studies on dogs' gastrointestinal parasites in different geographical locations are required to increase knowledge of the risk of canine zoonoses in human populations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The presence of parasites was examined in 450 faecal samples collected from eight zones of Zanjan province, northwest Iran from June to November 2015. The samples were examined using the sedimentation concentration m…

We conducted a survey to assess whether current veterinary practices concerning prophylaxis and treatment of canine roundworm (Toxocara canis) infection are adequate to prevent the potential public health risks of visceral larva migrans. We administered a standard questionnaire by telephone to 100 small animal practitioners. Fifty-four veterinarians included health education for the pet's owner as part of their routine care in a case of canine roundworm infection, and 39 recommended prophylactic treatment for this potential zoonosis. Seven veterinarians recommended that pups receive the 1st tr…

Little is known about preexisting lesions in livers of children with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). Study of these lesions may elucidate poss … morphological evidence of amoebiasis. In six cases there were granulomas similar to those caused by larva migrans visceralis (from Toxocara or other nematodes) in liver tissue not affected by the abscess. Nematode antigens in central areas of necrosis of granuloma in all six cases and fragments of a larva, possibly of Toxocara, were found on samples immunohisto …

Ivermectin is a major breakthrough for the treatment of onchocerciasis, strongyloidosis, scabies and cutaneous larva migrans. Combined with albendazole, ivermectin is highly efficient for treating lymphatic filariasis and intestinal worms. Ivermectin shows very few side-effects but its use in children below 5 and during pregnancy is discussed. Ivermectin tolerance could be related to mdr1 gene expression. Additional studies are needed to assess its efficiency for pediculosis.

Cutaneous manifestations of parasitic infections often result in discomfort, debilitation, and even stigmatization. Data on cutaneous manifestations of parasitic infections, however, are limited. This article provides updates on the cutaneous manifestations of parasitic infections which are known to occur in Western Pacific and Southeast Asian regions, such as scabies, pediculosis, cutaneous larva migrans, larva currens, cutaneous schistosomiasis, cutaneous enterobiasis, cutaneous cysticercosis, acute dermatolymphangioadenitis (lymphatic filariasis), and cutaneous amoebiasis. The lack of epide…

Some aspects of dog toxocarosis and syndrome of visceral larva migrans in human toxocarosis, particularly in children were presented. In detail the morphological characters and biology of Toxocara canis, its pathogenicity, ways of invasions as well as conditions favouring the spreading of parasites were discussed. Attention was paid to the efficacy of diagnosis of invasions, treatment and prophylaxis. The current toxocarosis threat was analysed and epidemiological prognosis was moved forward.

Toxocara canis eggs were found in the feces of 33 of 246 dogs and in two of 629 soil samples from 32 public parks in Essex County, New Jersey. Stool samples collected from these areas were free of T. canis eggs. The findings suggest that contamination of soil in public parks with T. canis eggs is not an important factor in the transmission of visceral larva migrans in this county.

It is useful to know that household pets are not involved in the life cycles of some worms, for example, pinworms. Some worms require a household pet in their cycles: the dog and cat roundworms, heartworms, and the dog and cat hookworms, the larvae of which are responsible for cutaneous larva migrans. Strongyloides (threadworm) infestation is sometimes difficult to diagnose and may be traced directly to the family dog.

Toxocara cati and Toxocara canis target mainly cats and dogs respectively. However, Toxoascaris leonine can infect both cats and dogs. T. cati and T. canis are zoonotic parasites which can lead to visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans in humans. 200 faecal specimens of animals (100 stray cats and 100 stray dogs) were examined in this study from which 155 (77.5%) were reported to be infected by these parasites. Fifty cats from Azarshahr, fifty cats from Marand, and one hundred dogs from Tabriz were examined in the present study of which 45 (90%), 43 (86%), and 67 (67%), respectively, …

The cellular evolution of the persisting, muscle-associated granuloma in murine toxocariasis (visceral larva migrans) was chronicled for 11 weeks by light and electron microscopy. The initial granuloma consisted primarily of eosinophils and appeared to develop from the acute inflammatory infiltrate. During the ensuing 48 hours, most of the eosinophils appeared to loose their granules and disintegrate. The resulting cellular debris was then taken up by newly arrived macrophages which become the predominant mononuclear cell in the lesion by 28 days of infection. By 11 weeks, the granuloma had be…

Parasites inhabit many places in the world. Some of these can inhabit the human skin or body. Many of these have been eradicated in the developed countries but persist in some tropical environments that are fun places to visit. Visitors can bring such parasites home with them such as scabies, cutaneous larva migrans, tungiasis and myiasis. Their clinical manifestations and treatment are presented for physicians evaluating and treating travelers from exotic places.

We report two cases of visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome by Toxocara in children. The biological presentation was unusual and characterized by persistent secondary thrombocytosis (>1,000 x 10(9)/L) mimicking an essential thrombocythemia and variable hypereosinophilia syndrome. Both children had non-specific symptoms including abdominal pain, skin rash, and fever. The diagnosis was confirmed by serology. The children were treated with either thiabendazole or albendazole, resulting in normalization of eosinophil and platelet counts.

Ivermectin, a broad-spectrum anti-parasitic agent first used in veterinary medicine, is active against numerous species of helminths and arthropods. For the past few years, world-wide reports on the use of ivermectin in various parasitic diseases with cutaneous tropism have led to its use in the field of skin parasitology. In this paper we review parasitoses which have been treated with ivermectin; mainly, filariasis, strongyloidiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, and scabies and head lice.

Toxocara species ova were found in 16 of 146 (11 per cent) soil samples collected from backyards and gardens of private residences within Baltimore City. The recovery rate of parasite ova was similar for households regardless of their grouping by pet ownership characteristics or the presence of visible animal feces. The findings demonstrate the common occurrence of these eggs in locations likely to be important in the transmission of visceral larva migrans.
