Effect of the extracts of the spiderflower, Cleome arabica, on feeding and survival of larvae of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis.

Aqueous and organic (hexane, chloroform, and methanol) extracts of siliquae, stems and leaves, and seeds of Cleome arabica L. (Brassicales: Capparidaceae) were evaluated in the laboratory for their antifeeding and insecticidal effect on larvae of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), using a leaf dipping bioassay with castor bean, Ricinus communis L. (Malpighiales: Euphorbiaceae), leaf discs. The polar extracts caused significant mortality. At the highest dose, C. arabica extracts exhibited significant antifeeding and phagostimulating activities again…

Characteristics of a developmental arrestant in the venom of the ectoparasitoid wasp Euplectrus comstockii.

Parasitic Hymenoptera regulate their hosts in order to provide a suitable source of nutrition and dwelling for their offspring. Few regulatory factors known to cause a specific effect on the host have been structurally characterized. The larval ectoparasitoid Euplectrus comstockii Howard (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) arrests larval-larval ecdysis in its lepidopteran hosts. Prior to oviposition, the female wasp inject a venom into the hemocoel of the host and that venom alone is effective in causing the arrestment. A venom gland-reservoir structure connected to the lower reproductive tract of the w…

Papiliomyces australis sp. nov. (Clavicipitaceae), infecting lepidopteran hepialid larvae in temperate forests of southern Chile.

Papiliomyces is a recently described genus of Cordyceps-like entomopathogens known to date only from Asia and typically associated with soil-dwelling ghost moth larvae (Hepialidae, Lepidoptera). Here we describe Papiliomyces australis sp. nov. from temperate Nothofagus forests in southern Chile, representing the first confirmed report of the genus in the Americas. The fungus was collected from buried hepialid larvae and isolated in culture. Stromata are cream to greyish white with immersed perithecia; asci are cylindrical with a distinct apical cap; ascospores are filiform, multiseptate and do…

Electrophysiological Responses and Field Attractants of Plutella xylostella Adults to Volatiles from Brassica oleracea.

The diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), is a major pest of crucifers. Many volatile compounds emitted by cruciferous vegetables are known to mediate the attraction of DBM adults to host plant and oviposition sites. However, development of highly effective attractants for DBM management is still needed. Here, we first analyzed the volatile compounds emitted by macerated broccoli leaves with gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Eight compounds, including benzaldehyde, limonene, phenylacetaldehyde, acetop…

Sound production by hawkmoth larvae and pupae through abdominal spiracles.

Some insect species produce defensive sounds across developmental stages. To test whether the characteristics, organs and mechanisms of sound production differ across stages within a single species, we examined how larvae and pupae of Phyllosphingia dissimilis (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) produce sounds in response to simulated predator attacks via tactile stimulation. Laboratory experiments showed that final-instar larvae produce sound pulses (dominant frequency: 9.2-12.9 kHz; sound pressure level: 50.2-62.4 dB SPL) by expelling air through the pair of eighth abdominal (A8) spiracles, whereas pu…

Investigation of an epidemic of seasonal ataxia in Ikare, western Nigeria.

Seasonal outbreaks of an acute ataxic syndrome occur annually in parts of South-Western Nigeria, characterized by cerebellar ataxia, nystagmus and varying levels of impaired consciousness following consumption of the roasted larvae of Anaphe venata Butler (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae). An investigation of an epidemic in Ikare, headquarters of the Akoko north-east local Government in Western Nigeria (pop. 60,000) in the 1993 disease season is reported. The diagnosis of seasonal ataxia was verified in 34 consecutive new admissions (M:F 1:3.25, median age 29 years, range 2-70 years). All were of lo…

Chemical Ecology and Olfaction in Short-Horned Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Chemoreception plays a crucial role in the reproduction and survival of insects, which often rely on their sense of smell and taste to find partners, suitable habitats, and food sources, and to avoid predators and noxious substances. There is a substantial body of work investigating the chemoreception and chemical ecology of Diptera (flies) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies); but less is known about the Orthoptera (grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, and wēta). Within the Orthoptera, the family Acrididae contains about 6700 species of short-horned grasshoppers. Grasshoppers are fascinating o…

EsigGOBP1: The Key Protein Binding Alpha-Phellandrene in Endoclita signifer Larvae.

Endoclita signifer larvae show olfactory recognition towards volatiles of eucalyptus trunks and humus soils. Further, EsigGOBP1 was identified through larval head transcriptome and speculated as the main odorant-binding proteins in E. signifer larvae. In this study, the highest expression of EsigGOBP1 was only expressed in the heads of 3rd instar larvae of E. signifer, compared with the thorax and abdomen; this was consistent with the phenomenon of habitat transfer of 3rd instar larvae, indicating that EsigGOBP1 was a key OBP gene in E. signifer larvae. Results of fluorescence competition bind

Galleria mellonella as a model invertebrate host for the study of muriform cells of dematiaceous fungi.

AIM: To study the pathogenesis of chromoblastomycosis using the alternative model host Galleria mellonella. METHODOLOGY: We analyzed the virulence of different dematiaceous fungal strains and the host immune responses (hemocytes density and morphological changes) to Fonsecaea monophora by the alternative infection model. Then detected the development of the pathogenic muriform cells within larvae under microscope. RESULTS: Increasing inocula resulted in greater larval mortality and Cladophialophora carrionii was the most virulent. Low inocula activated the humoral immune response significant

Qualitative and Quantitative Differences in Herbivore-Induced Plant Volatile Blends from Tomato Plants Infested by Either Tuta absoluta or Bemisia tabaci.

Plants release a variety of volatile organic compounds that play multiple roles in the interactions with other plants and animals. Natural enemies of plant-feeding insects use these volatiles as cues to find their prey or host. Here, we report differences between the volatile blends of tomato plants infested with the whitefly Bemisia tabaci or the tomato borer Tuta absoluta. We compared the volatile emission of: (1) clean tomato plants; (2) tomato plants infested with T. absoluta larvae; and (3) tomato plants infested with B. tabaci adults, nymphs, and eggs. A total of 80 volatiles were record

Habitat fragmentation, tree diversity, and plant invasion interact to structure forest caterpillar communities.

Habitat fragmentation and invasive species are two of the most prominent threats to terrestrial ecosystems. Few studies have examined how these factors interact to influence the diversity of natural communities, particularly primary consumers. Here, we examined the effects of forest fragmentation and invasion of exotic honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii, Caprifoliaceae) on the abundance and diversity of the dominant forest herbivores: woody plant-feeding Lepidoptera. We systematically surveyed understory caterpillars along transects in 19 forest fragments over multiple years in southwestern Ohio an…

Antifungal efficacy during Candida krusei infection in non-conventional models correlates with the yeast in vitro susceptibility profile.

The incidence of opportunistic fungal infections has increased in recent decades due to the growing proportion of immunocompromised patients in our society. Candida krusei has been described as a causative agent of disseminated fungal infections in susceptible patients. Although its prevalence remains low among yeast infections (2-5%), its intrinsic resistance to fluconazole makes this yeast important from epidemiologic aspects. Non mammalian organisms are feasible models to study fungal virulence and drug efficacy. In this work we have used the lepidopteran Galleria mellonella and the nematod…

The sublethal effects of deltamethrin on Trichogramma behaviors during the exploitation of host patches.

Trichogramma and parasitoids as a whole are key species because they regulate natural populations of other insects. As any non-target species, this parasitoid can be exposed to insecticides by environmental pollution. This study identified the effects of an LD 20 of deltamethrin (a pyrethroid) on the behavior of Trichogramma brassicae females infesting a patch of host eggs. The study found that females that survived exposure to the insecticide infested fewer host eggs; spent more time on unsuitable, previously infested host eggs; and infested more previously infested host eggs than controls. [Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff) induced ocular lesions: case reports].

UNLABELLED: The Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff), is an endemic insect of pine and cedar trees, existing both in rural and urban areas. Ocular toxicity, once rare due to the efficacy of eradication methods, is caused by the insects' hair and is expected to be more frequent with its recrudescence. We report two clinical cases and review the epidemiology of Processionary and its eye injuries. Case 1: a 64 year-old patient complained of red eye and foreign body sensation after being gardening. She had a BCVA of 0.5 and biomicroscopy revealed an epithelial erosion, flare (++), Tyndal

Pinemoth caterpillar disease.

Pinemoth caterpillar disease is a well-recognised disorder which occurs in South-Eastern China and is due to contact with the cocoons or larvae of the pinemoth (Dendrolimus punctatus). Generalised symptoms, which may be noted within two weeks of contact, consist of pyrexia, anorexia, malaise, rigors, headache, or dizziness. Localised abnormalities include dermatologic changes, skin nodules, and arthritis. The arthritis is usually monoarticular and most frequently involves the knee, ankle, and wrist. The radiologic findings consist of periarticular swelling, osteoporosis, erosions, or periostea
