To change or not to change - That is the question: A qualitative study of lifestyle changes following acute myocardial infarction.

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate key factors related to lifestyle changes following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) by eliciting survivors' subjective needs for, attitudes towards and experiences with behaviour changes in their everyday life to improve future interventions promoting lifestyle changes. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 individuals who had recently experienced an AMI. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results The data analysis revealed that lifest

Life events, substance use, psychological distress, and quality of life in male and female French gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on substance use, psychological distress, quality of life (QoL), and life events among gamblers are carried out on pathological gamblers seeking treatment, and sex differences are rarely investigated. The aim of this study was to explore the potential male-female differences in the relationship between these variables in a nationally representative French sample. METHODS: Three hundred thirty-two problem gamblers (PGs) and 25,314 non-problem gamblers or non-gamblers (NPGs) were evaluated for sociodemographic variables, gambling behavior, substance use, QoL, and life e

The consequences of spasmodic dysphonia on communication-related quality of life: a qualitative study of the insider's experiences.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to explore the biopsychosocial consequences of spasmodic dysphonia (SD) as experienced by people with SD. Qualitative research methods were used to investigate the insider's perspective of living with SD. Six adults with SD participated in face-to-face phenomenological interviews. The results are summarized in a model of personal experiences of SD which shows that communication-related quality of life (QOL) is shaped by experiences with multiple physiologic (voice quality, effort, voice dependability); personal (affective responses, changes in self-vie

Childhood trauma is associated with a specific admixture of affective, anxiety, and psychosis symptoms cutting across traditional diagnostic boundaries.

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses link childhood trauma to depression, mania, anxiety disorders, and psychosis. It is unclear, however, whether these outcomes truly represent distinct disorders following childhood trauma, or that childhood trauma is associated with admixtures of affective, psychotic, anxiety and manic psychopathology throughout life. METHOD: We used data from a representative general population sample (NEMESIS-2, n = 6646), of whom respectively 1577 and 1120 had a lifetime diagnosis of mood or anxiety disorder, as well as from a sample of patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (G

Life events and their subjective appraisal by children and adolescents in clinical high-risk states of psychosis: a cross-sectional comparison with inpatients with non-psychotic disorders and community subjects.

While childhood trauma and neglect are generally found to be increased in clinical high-risk of psychosis (CHR-P), findings on life events (LEs) are so far inconclusive, with some indication of a stress sensitization effect in CHR-P, leading to generally higher stress appraisals of LEs, and a LE-reducing effect of negative symptoms. Thus, we studied 50 LEs and their appraisals as assessed with the Munich Life Event Scale in CHR-P patients according to ultra-high risk and basic symptom criteria and age- and sex-matched clinical inpatient (ClinS) and healthy controls (GPS; each n = 112, age 8-17

Self-focused rumination links stressful events to depressive and anxiety symptoms in older adults with depressive symptoms: path and network analyses.

Self-focused rumination, defined as an excessive attentional focus on one's depressive symptoms and their causes, meanings, and consequences, is well-established for its contribution to the onset and maintenance of depressive and anxiety symptoms. However, it remains unclear how this cognitive style can be manifested in older adults and how it might bridge the influences of different stressful life events (SLEs), namely dependent SLEs (partially attributable to one's behaviours) and independent SLEs (entirely beyond personal control), with the two symptom dimensions. Data were from 1868 commun

A multimetric examination of self-reported personality functioning and personality trait development.

Personality functioning, or Criterion A of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders, captures deficits in intrapersonal and interpersonal capacities, is believed to be relatively malleable, and is associated with normal range personality (e.g., Big Five traits). Questions about changes in personality functioning are of critical relevance for theory development and psychotherapeutic treatment of personality pathology; yet, little is known about its longitudinal development. Using a sample of German-speaking young adults (N = 1,440, Mage = 25.57), we examined 1-year unconditional and event

I can't believe you don't have a box for this: 'other' events and posttraumatic stress symptoms among women.

Background: Traumatic exposures are often assessed in clinical and research settings by a list of events chosen because they meet the definition of trauma required for the ICD-11 or DSM-5 diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some trauma measures include an 'other' option, with a text box enabling participants to describe an event not listed. Objective: There were three aims in this study: (1) to identify commonly endorsed 'other' events not listed on a standard measure of trauma exposure, (2) to identify thematic commonalities among these other events, and (3) to assess the preval

Life stress influences the relationship between sex hormone fluctuation and affective symptoms in peripubertal female adolescents.

Female adolescents have a greatly increased risk of depression starting at puberty, which continues throughout the reproductive lifespan. Sex hormone fluctuation has been highlighted as a key proximal precipitating factor in the development of mood disorders tied to reproductive events; however, hormone-induced affective state change is poorly understood in the pubertal transition. The present study investigated the impact of recent stressful life events on the relationship between sex hormone change and affective symptoms in peripubertal female participants. Thirty-five peripubertal participa

Causal effects of time-varying body size on selected autoimmune disorders: a life course Mendelian randomisation study.

BACKGROUND: Based on Barker's hypothesis, some studies investigated the associations between birth weight and several disorders. Apart from issues with statistical power and well-known shortcomings of the observational study design, there are no studies accounting for changes in weight-related body size over the life course regarding rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and multiple sclerosis. METHODS: Using genetic information of up to 806 834 participants, this study investigated the associations between time-varying weight-related body size from birth to adulthood and the m

The cross-sectional association of stressful life events with depression severity among patients with hypertension and diabetes in Malawi.

Depressive disorders are a leading cause of global morbidity and remain disproportionately high in low- and middle-income settings. Stressful life events (SLEs) are known risk factors for depressive episodes and worsened depressive severity, yet are under-researched in comparison to other depression risk factors. As depression is often comorbid with hypertension, diabetes, and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), research into this relationship among patients with NCDs is particularly relevant to increasing opportunities for integrated depression and NCD care. This study aims to estimate the

A narrative analysis of the stories of mothers who have parented a child with Hodgkin lymphoma who is currently in early survivorship.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the lived experience of mothers of children who have survived Hodgkin lymphoma, from diagnosis, through treatment and recovery as she has lived it and in her own words and to discuss the self-reported experiences in the context of the theoretical propositions of Attachment Theory and birth order as it applies to the mother-child dyad with this life experience. BACKGROUND: While much has been written about childhood cancer survivors and their parents independently, there are unique struggles that a mother and a childhood cancer survivor face as a dyad. Forensic mental health evaluations of military personnel with traumatic life event, in a university hospital in Ankara, Turkey.

INTRODUCTION: The definition of psychological trauma has been rephrased with the DSM-5. From now on, witnessing someone else's traumatic event is also accepted as a traumatic life event. Therefore, the psychiatric examination of forensic cases gains importance for not overlooking a psychiatric trauma. This research aims to discuss the psychiatric examinations of military personnel who had a traumatic life event and to reveal psychiatric states of soldiers after trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The forensic reports prepared at Gulhane Military Medical Academy (GMMA), Forensic Medicine polyclinic

Prospective associations of psychosocial adversity in childhood with risk factors for cardiovascular disease in adulthood: the MRC National Survey of Health and Development.

BACKGROUND: Studies assessing associations of childhood psychosocial adversity (e.g. sexual abuse, physical neglect, parental death), as opposed to socioeconomic adversity, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in adulthood are scarce. We aimed to assess associations of various forms of psychosocial adversity and cumulative adversity in childhood, with multiple CVD risk factors in mid-life. METHODS: Participants were from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development. Childhood psychosocial risk factors were reported prospectively by parents from 1950-1957, and retrospectively by

Stressful life events and perceived parental control in formerly homeless families: Impact on child-internalizing symptoms.

Research has neglected the potential role of perceived parental control as a moderator between stressful life events (SLEs) and child-internalizing symptoms. Using secondary data from the Early Risers "Skills for Success" Program (August, Realmuto, Hektner, & Bloomquist, 2001), this study examined the impact of perceived parental control on the association between SLEs and child internalizing symptoms in formerly homeless families. The sample consisted of 137 families with 223 children between 4 and 12 years of age (M = 8.1, SD = 2.3) living in supportive housing sites in Minneapolis, Minnesot

Unemployment and substance use problems among young adults: Does childhood low socioeconomic status exacerbate the effect?

The current study tested whether unemployment predicted young adults' heavy episodic drinking, cigarette smoking, and cannabis use after taking into account individual development in substance use. Furthermore, building on the life course perspective, this study examined whether the link between unemployment and substance use among young adults differed for those who experienced low childhood SES compared to those who did not. Data for the present study came from the Seattle Social Development Project (SSDP), a panel study examining a broad range of developmental outcomes from ages 10 to 33. A
