OBJECTIVE: The aetiology of biliary liver disease in children with intestinal failure treated with long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) is multifactorial. Risks include the lipid component of PN. The aim of the study was to compare prevalence and outcome of gallstones with different types of intravenous lipids.
METHODS: Liver and biliary tract imaging and relevant clinical details were reviewed in 71 patients (37, 52% boys) treated with PN for >3 months. Types of lipid infused were compared with regard to hepatobiliary abnormalities.

Using a novel approach, we have analyzed 30 parameters characterizing detailed spectrum and fractional content of LPs in plasma of patients with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The blood plasma of all TBE patients (30 patients), as compared with that of healthy individuals (120 patients), is characterized by decreased concentrations of many LP subfractions and of the total concentration of all plasma LPs (hypolipoproteinemia). One hundred and thirty-five women aged 17-45 years with DSM-III-R BN entered a 12-week cognitive behavioral therapy treatment programme. Lipids and fatty acids were studied in some lichen species after exposure to 1 ppm of aqueous sulfur dioxide. The changes in lipid composition are specific to the lichen species tested. The exposure of lichens to SO2 resulted in a slight reduction of the total phospholipid content. The amount of betaine lipid diacylglyceryltrimethylhomoserine was increased in Stereocaulon paschale, but the level of this lipid was not changed in Peltigera aphthosa. An increase in fatty acid unsaturation in lichens in response to the effect of SO2 probably has adaptive significance.

This work studies the relationship between a common genetic marker in our population, sickle-cell trait, and atherogenic risk factors. One hundred and twenty-two healthy subjects were studied. Forty-six subjects had normal haemoglobin (HB-AA) while 76 had sickle-cell trait Hb-AS. Mean cholesterol level was higher in subjects with sickle-cell trait (2.82 +/- 0.21 g/I) than in subjects with normal haemoglobin (2.08 +/- 0.40 g/I) used as controls. Ten men with Klinefelter's syndrome were studied to assess the effect of testosterone replacement on plasma lipids and apolipoproteins. Measurements taken before the insertion of a testosterone ester implant were compared with those obtained 1 week and 4 weeks later. Nausea and/or vomiting in pregnancy (emesis gravidarum) is a very common event. The specific etiology of this disorder is still unknown. In this study we examined serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in 98 healthy pregnant women in early and late pregnancy. Sixty of these women complained of emesis gravidarum.
