Climate change, disaster management and primary health care in Zimbabwe.

The health crises related to climate change in African countries are predicted to get worse and more prevalent. The response to catastrophic events such as cyclones, flooding and landslides must be rapid and well-coordinated. Slower adverse events such as droughts, heat stress and food insecurity must similarly be anticipated, planned for and resourced. There are lessons to be learnt by the health system following the crisis created by Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe during March 2019, which required a massive humanitarian response to mitigate the impact of torrential rainfall on lives and livelihood

The use of legal action in New York City to ensure treatment of tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: After an increase in the number of cases of tuberculosis, New York City passed regulations to address the problem of nonadherence to treatment regimens. The commissioner of health can issue orders compelling a person to be examined for tuberculosis, to complete treatment, to receive treatment under direct observation, or to be detained for treatment. On the basis of a review of patients' records, we evaluated the use of these legal actions between April 1993 and April 1995. RESULTS: Among more than 8000 patients with tuberculosis, regulatory orders were issued for less

Contrasting pre-vaccine COVID-19 waves in Italy through functional data analysis.

This study analyzes mortality patterns during two pre-vaccine COVID-19 waves in Italy, using data from its 107 provinces. Mortality is examined alongside information on mobility, governmental restrictions, and socio-demographic, infrastructural, and environmental factors using Functional Data Analysis tools. Publicly available differential mortality data and local mobility data from Google are processed with smoothing splines and aligned through landmark registration. The resulting curves are clustered to identify mortality patterns, and regression models are used to evaluate the impact of mob

Transformative effect of a Humanitarian Program for individuals affected by rare diseases: building support systems and creating local expertise.

Rare diseases affect > 400 million people globally with a disproportionate burden falling on children, resulting in high morbidity and mortality rates. Affected individuals in some under-resourced countries have limited access to expert care or treatments; moreover, they suffer long diagnostic journeys during which debilitating and life-threatening complications occur. Lysosomal storage disorders (LSD) are prototype rare diseases due, in the main, to inherited deficiencies of lysosomal enzymes/transporters that affect up to 1 in 5000 newborns. Recognizing the need to provide treatment access t

Lack of Cultural Competency in International Aid Responses: The Ebola Outbreak in Liberia.

A cornerstone of effective disaster management is that response should always begin and end at the local level (1). The response to the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, West Africa, was a combination of independent efforts by many nations and organizations. Many of these independent efforts ignored or were not able to work with the local levels of emergency management in Liberia. This oversight occurred because of the Liberian's mistrust of both their government and foreign aid groups, as well as the lack of cultural competency demonstrated by the aid groups. The health-care and

Roles played by Locally Elected Representatives in Facilitating Multi-Sectoral Action for Health: Evidence from Kerala, India.

Background: Multi-Sectoral Action (MSA) for health involves the collaboration of various stakeholder groups within and beyond the health sector and is seen to be critical for the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals. In Kerala, India, decentralisation reforms have been in place for some time, and we sought to characterise the roles specifically played by locally elected representatives or Local Self-Government (LSG) members, in relation to MSA. The planning, execution, and evaluation of a mass prophylaxis full-scale exercise in cook county, IL.

Increasing threats of bioterrorism and the emergence of novel disease agents, including the recent international outbreaks of H7N9 influenza and MERS-CoV, have stressed the importance and highlighted the need for public health preparedness at local, regional, and national levels. To test plans that were developed for mass prophylaxis scenarios, in April 2013 the Cook Country Department of Public Health (CCDPH) and the Triple Community (TripCom) Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) executed a full-scale mass prophylaxis exercise in response to a simulated anthrax bioterrorism attack. Developing an academic health department in Northeast Tennessee: a sustainable approach through student leadership.

In an effort to bridge the gap between public health practice and academia, the Health Resources and Services Administration-funded Tennessee Public Health Training Center (LIFEPATH) has supported establishment of an academic health department (AHD) involving the East Tennessee State University College of Public Health (COPH) and the Sullivan County Regional Health Department (SCRHD). The SCRHD identified a need to increase internal capacity to conduct ongoing community health assessment and community-centered practice. Similarly, the COPH recognized the need to expand evidence-based practice
