Case histories were studied of 286 patients treated for mandibular fractures by the Department of Plastic Surgery in conjunction with the Dental Department at Odense University Hospital between 1964 and 1973. 46.5% of the patients were aged 18-30 years; and 73.4% were male. Mandibular fractures associated with mid-face fractures were most frequently caused by traffic accidents (81%). When the mandible alone was fractured traffic accidents accounted for 50%, while assaults were responsible for 20%. Accidents at work only occurred among the men. Of the 487 mandibular fractures the most frequent …

The efficacy of self-curing acrylic resin in the fixation of fractured mandibles was studied in eight adult mongrel dogs. Three dogs were killed at 1 month, two at 3 months, and three at 6 months after insertion of the resin. Roentgenograms taken after operation and after the dogs had been put to death demonstrated satisfactory fracture reduction and bony healing. The retentive grooves appeared larger on the postmortem roentgenograms, apparently from fibrous tissue that formed between the acrylic resin and the bone. Sections through the groove and fracture site did not show any fibrocartilage

The objective of this study was to compile the currently available evidence regarding the functional and morphologic outcomes of functional orthodontic therapy for mandibular condyle fracture. We performed searches in PubMed and Google Scholar as well as manually (IOK issues 2008-2019) using the keywords "trauma", "TMJ", "activator", "condylar fracture", "fracture", "mandibular condylar fracture", "occlusal splint" and "functional appliance". Screening and analysis of study eligibility were performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The sea

Acute epidural hematoma is one of the most serious traumatic conditions in neurosurgery, for which emergency surgery may be indicated. Injury to the middle meningeal artery (MMA) is generally the cause of hemorrhage, often accompanied by convexity fractures resulting from head trauma. However, an epidural hematoma by a contusion of the jaw is very rare. A 27-year-old male fell after drinking alcohol and was brought to our hospital. The patient's Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was 6 (E1V1M4), and the right pupil was 5 mm with no response to light. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the head sho

Mandibular fractures are the most common fractures in dentistry. Since diagnosing a mandibular fracture is difficult when only panoramic radiographic images are used, most doctors use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to identify the patient's fracture location. In this study, considering the diagnosis of mandibular fractures using the combined deep learning technique, YOLO and U-Net were used as auxiliary diagnostic methods to detect the location of mandibular fractures based on panoramic images without CBCT. In a previous study, mandibular fracture diagnosis was performed using YOLO learn…

This systematic review was conducted to evaluate the retro-auricular trans-meatal approach (RA) to mandibular head fractures. Fractures of the mandibular head (8%) are a specific type of mandibular condyle fractures (34%). Despite numerous complications of conservative treatment, e.g., limited mobility and even ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint, as well as shortening of the mandibular ramus resulting in malocclusion, surgical intervention in this type of fracture is still problematic. The main problems with the dominant pre-auricular approach are the high risk of paralysis of the facial

OBJECTIVE: Denture fracture is one of the most common complications in prosthodontics and implant overdentures are reported to be at higher risk of fractures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the incidence and factors associated with the occurrence of fractures in patients treated with a single implant mandibular overdenture (SIMO) opposed by a conventional maxillary complete denture.
METHODS: A cohort of 152 patients, 65.1% female and 34.9% male, mean age 65.4 ± 8.5 years, were prospectively followed-up for a minimum of 1 year and up to 6.7 years. Patients received a single mid

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study design.
OBJECTIVE: There are multiple accepted treatment options for internal fixation of mandibular angle fractures. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a safe zone for lateral border fixation of mandibular angle fractures.
METHODS: One hundred coronal images of facial computed tomography (CT) scans were reviewed on patients between the ages of 18 to 48. Measurements were taken in the area of the second and third molar region related to the inferior border to the superior extent of the inferior alveolar canal and apex of the second mola

PURPOSE: Mandibular condylar fractures are relatively common fractures, accounting for 29 to 52% of all mandibular fractures. Recently, the debate between closed versus open treatment of the condylar fracture has shifted toward more specific surgical questions concerning the number and pattern of the fixation method for the condylar region. We have attempted to resolve the controversy with the systematic review and meta-analysis. The purpose of the present study was to compare the outcomes of different methods of fixation for mandibular condylar fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted …

Blunt trauma to the parotid resulting in the formation of a sialocele is rare, with only three cases identified in the literature. We present a unique case involving a 32-year-old man with blunt trauma resulting in a left mandibular angle fracture. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the left mandibular angle fracture via transoral approach. At follow-up, after resolution of the edema from the injury, a sialocele was noted in the region of the left anterior parotid gland. The patient was treated conservatively with antisialagogues, pressure dressings, and multiple per

The majority of dental trauma involves anterior teeth, especially the maxillary central incisors. A mandibular incisor fracture with or without pulp tissue involvement is considerably less common. Different approaches for treating these fractured teeth have been reported in the literature. The type of treatment rendered depends mainly on the extent of fracture, pulp involvement, radicular fracture, biologic width infringement or violation, and presence of the fractured piece. This case report illustrates reattachment of fractured fragments on two mandibular incisors without pulp exposure using

OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcome of the open method versus the closed method of treatment for mandibular condylar fracture.
STUDY DESIGN: Fifty patients with fractures of the mandibular condylar processes were evaluated. All fractures were displaced, with a degree of deviation between the condylar fragment and the ascending ramus of 10 to 45 degrees (mediolaterally). The patients were randomly divided into two groups, with group 1 receiving open reduction internal fixation and group 2 receiving closed reduction. The follow-up was done over the period of 6 months.
RESULTS: Statistically sign

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative mandibular fracture (PMF) after marginal resection (MR) of the mandible remains an unresolved issue, and it has been reported that at least 10 mm of postoperative mandibular body height (PMBH) is required to prevent PMF. This study evaluated the clinical, physical, and structural risk factors for PMF in MR patients and determined appropriate preventive measures for PMF.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study included 44 patients with lower gingival carcinoma who underwent MR. PMF occurred in four of these patients. Thirteen associated factors identified from medical

As every surgical procedure extraction of third molars can result in several complications, among them the mandibular angle fracture. Predisposing factors for fracture should be analyzed during and after the surgery. This paper aims to discuss the predisposing factors to the occurrence of mandibular angle fractures during and after the procedure for third molars extraction, as well as surgical principles to avoid this complication.
