SAPHO syndrome with TMJ involvement: review of the literature and case presentation.

Synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is a rare group of sterile, inflammatory osteoarticular disorders classically associated with skin manifestations. The etiology is unknown but probably involves genetic, infectious, and immunological components. The characteristic feature of the disease is found in the bone lesions, which typically involve the anterior chest wall and axial skeleton. In the literature review, six case reports discussed involvement of the TMJ. Treatment of SAPHO is geared toward symptom management as there is no cure. Surgery for mandibular les

Prosthodontic considerations for patients with cleft lip and palate.

The prosthodontist provides the final active treatment for the patient with a cleft. He must anticipate and decide upon the prosthodontic procedures in collaboration with the plastic surgeon and/or the orthodontist during the period of their interventions. The purpose of prosthodontic treatment is to prevent the relapse of the maxillary segments and the teeth after surgical and/or orthodontic correction, as well as the rehabilitation of mastication, speech and aesthetics. The individual peculiarities of the cleft patient should be taken into consideration from the beginning. They are: discrepa

A prospective evaluation assessing the effectiveness of the 'Dynamax' mandibular appliance in the management of obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) affects 4-6% of the middle-aged UK population and is responsible for significant partnership disharmony. Nasal CPAP therapy is effective but has poor compliance in less severe cases- bulky with poor portability and frequently deemed socially unacceptable. The 'Dynamax mandibular appliance (DMA) is a current treatment for Skeletal 11 malocclusion characterised by mandibular retrusion. It has the advantage of both maxillary expansion and mandibular advancement and is developed and tailored on an individual basis by orthodontic sculpture. These

Straight, semi-anatomic and anatomic TMJ implants: the influence of condylar geometry and bone fixation screws.

A 3D finite element model of in vitro intact and implanted mandibles with different temporomandibular joints (TMJ) was analyzed. Three TMJ implant geometries were assessed. The displacements, stress and strain fields on the condyle were obtained for both simulated cases. Strains were also assessed near the screws that fixate the implant to the mandible. The geometry of the mandible was obtained through 3D digitalization of a synthetic model. The TMJ implants studied were modelled considering a commercial implant which was also used to create semi-anatomic and anatomic implants that were analyz

Outcome analysis of mandibular condylar replacements in tumor and trauma reconstruction: a prospective analysis of 131 cases with long-term follow-up.

PURPOSE: Replacement of the mandibular condyle with alloplastic materials is sometimes required when the mandibular condyle is involved in pathology or trauma. Previous investigations into alloplastic mandibular condylar replacement have met with mixed results because they reported only a limited number of patients with short-term follow-up. This investigation sought to determine the long-term outcome of alloplastic replacement of the mandibular condyle in a large population of patients after disarticulation due to pathology or trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, long-term

Review of emerging temporomandibular joint total joint replacement systems.

Total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement has been documented as a viable option for the management of end-stage TMJ disease, but data on long-term outcomes have been reported for only two established systems: TMJ Concepts, and Zimmer Biomet. Other devices are now emerging globally, but reports of preclinical laboratory and clinical outcomes are limited. We retrieved information on the design, material composition, preclinical laboratory tests, regulatory status, and clinical outcomes of new TMJ replacement systems from PubMed and Google, and from personal correspondence with surgeons wo

Designing artificial jaw joints (AJJs) in VR space for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

In this present study, we will report on a case of a patient with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). She suffered a condyle fracture that led to rheumatoid arthritis. Furthermore, we will review how we planned her treatment and designed her artificial jaw joints (AJJs) via 3D imaging in VR space. We decided the mandibular position based on the facial aesthetic line (E-line) and the occlusion. Then we designed her AJJs to comply with the translated mandible via 3D-modeling software. The upper airway obstruction is assumed to occur in the present case due to a pharyngeal obstruction, as in other pa

Two different techniques of manufacturing TMJ replacements - A technical report.

INTRODUCTION: Presently, during the surgical treatment of the patients in maxillofacial surgery, one can use various medical implants. Moreover custom made implants are being used. Replacements may be fitted to the structure and shape of the human skull owing to CAD/CAM (custom aided design/manufacture) called customized implants. This study was aimed to report for the first time clinical material from which custom implants, using two different techniques, were manufactured to reconstruct the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, eleven patients with an average a
