We report a rare case of large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the breast in a 49-year-old woman. The patient presented after discovering a right breast mass five years earlier. Mammography revealed a high-density mass and enlarged axillary lymph nodes. Biopsy confirmed invasive carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation. Initially, she received TE chemotherapy, followed by carboplatin and etoposide (CBP) due to disease progression. After eight cycles, she underwent modified radical mastectomy and postoperative radiotherapy. One year later, the patient developed metastases in the l

An 80-year-old woman with a history of left breast cancer complained of dysphagia. At the age of 67 years, she had undergone a left modified radical mastectomy, chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy for left breast cancer. Six years after adjuvant therapy completion, she developed dysphagia. Chest CT showed only midesophageal stenosis. Endoscopic examination revealed whole circumferential stenosis without mucosal abnormality located 25 cm from the incisors, and a biopsy showed histologically normal mucosa. Endoscopic balloon dilatation was performed 5 times in 1 year and 3 months. Subsequently,

BACKGROUND: Cystic hypersecretory carcinoma is a rare subtype of breast cancer. It is a member of cystic hypersecretory lesions, which include a series of pathological disease lineages: cystic hypersecretory hyperplasia (CHH), CHH with atypia, cystic hypersecretory carcinoma (CHC) and invasive CHC. It was found that most cystic hypersecretion lesions were in situ carcinoma, and only 19 cases of invasive cystic hypersecretion carcinoma were reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We are reporting a case of a 63-year-old female who had a lump in her left breast for 3 years. A modified radical mastectomy w

Metaplastic carcinoma of breast refers to a heterogeneous group of neoplasms characterized by intimate admixture of adenocarcinoma with dominant areas of spindle cell, squamous cell and/ or mesenchymal differentiation. They constitute the rarest histological variant of invasive ductal carcinoma. These carcinomas have aggressive clinical behaviour and show suboptimal response to standard treatment. A 49-year-old female presented with lump in the left breast for one year. She was diagnosed as infiltrating ductal carcinoma breast with triple negative hormone status by trucut biopsy. She completed

Whole-body bone scans and whole body (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomographic/computed tomographic scans are sensitive for detecting bone metastasis in patients with breast cancer. However, it is often difficult to discriminate between bone metastasis and other nonmalignant bone lesions. Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia is a rare disorder characterized by the osteoid medullary cavity filling with fibrous tissue causing bony expansion. We report the case of a 42-year-old female patient with ductal carcinoma in situ, which appeared to have multiple bone metastases on initial work-up i

Large excision of tumor soft tissues is often complicated by infections, seriously undermined blood supply and venous drainage, tendon exposure, functional impairment. We report the case of a 67 years old woman admitted for a sarcoma of the right forearm occurring 14 years after a modified radical mastectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy for carcinoma of the right breast. A wide excision of the lesion and split-thickness skin graft was performed with uneventful recovery and satisfactory healing of the graft tissue and functional aspect of the arm. In the last few decades, there has been a search f

INTRODUCTION: male breast cancer (MBC) is very rare and accounts for less than one percent of all cancers in men. Because of the low incidence of MBC it has not attracted extensive studies. The current study is the first cohort of men with breast carcinoma reported in our country to date.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 58 MBC patients who had been treated at Shahid Faghihi Hospital in Shiraz, Iran, between 1990 and 2007. Data regarding general characteristics of patients including: age at time of diagnosis, family history of breast cancer, site, stage

BACKGROUND: Two-stage tissue expander/implant breast reconstruction has become increasingly popular, but reports have varied widely in the incidence of complications associated with this approach. A large consecutive patient experience using low-height tissue expanders in immediate breast reconstruction is presented and discussed in conjunction with other recent reports using this approach following mastectomy.
METHODS: A total of 172 consecutive patients underwent immediate breast reconstruction following mastectomy, with placement of a total of 246 tissue expanders. All expanders used were

BACKGROUND: there are concerns that physiologic changes of the peripartum breast may result in complications in breast conservation therapy. We present the complications of breast conservation surgeries and mastectomies performed for pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: from April 1989 through April 2008, sixty-seven breast cancer patients underwent surgical management for PABC, defined as surgery during pregnancy or within one year postpartum. Records of women who had surgery were examined for post-operative wound complications of milk fistula, cellulitis, absces

BACKGROUND: Despite increased demand for contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM), the survival benefit of this procedure remains uncertain.
METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database to identify 107 106 women with breast cancer who had undergone mastectomy for treatment between 1998 and 2003 and a subset of 8902 women who also underwent CPM during the same period. Associations between predictor variables and the likelihood of undergoing CPM were evaluated by use of chi(2) analyses. Risk-stratified (estrogen receptor [ER] status, stage, and age) adjusted surv

Regional lymph node metastases in patients with breast cancer have fundamental staging, prognostic, and treatment implications. Classically, axillary lymph node sampling requires a dissection under general anesthesia. The concept that a primary, or sentinel, lymph node is the first node to receive drainage from a tumor has been established in patients with malignant melanomas using radiolabeled tracers and vital dyes. This study proposed two hypotheses: (1) radiolabeled sentinel lymph nodes can be identified in most patients with breast cancer, and (2) radiolabeled sentinel lymph node biopsy a

A review of 1244 breast cancer cases from the Tumor Registry of Northwest Community Hospital between 1980 and 1995 was carried out to investigate the incidence of axillary metastasis. There were 442 patients (35.45%) with positive nodes. The small lesions were graded to ascertain if size and grade of small tumors can be used to predict axillary metastasis. One hundred and seventy-nine cases of < or = 1.0 cm were retrospectively reviewed by one pathologist. Tumors <0.4 cm had negative nodes. Those with nuclear and histologic grades of 1 had 3% positive nodes, the remainder had positive nodes ra

Forequarter or interscapulothoracic amputation is a major surgical procedure indicated primarily in the treatment of malignant lesions involving the bony and soft tissue parieties of the upper part of the arm, shoulder, and scapula. It is also indicated in extensive trauma with irreparable damage to the shoulder area and as a palliative measure in intractable pain caused by incurable tumors of the shoulder girdle. Several operative techniques have been described: the classical Berger approach, an anterior pectoral approach, and posterior retroscapular approaches. A radical transthoracic approa

INTRODUCTION: Paget's disease (PD) represents 1%-3% of all breast cancers and mostly occurs in postmenopausal women. Multiple studies have confirmed that breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by radiotherapy is a safe option for patients with in situ or invasive PD, ensuring local control and survival rates similar to those achieved with mastectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 115 patients affected by PD treated in our institution between January 2000 and May 2021. Median age at diagnosis was 60 years and median follow-up was 82 months; 69 patients were treated with

BACKGROUND: Post-mastectomy loco-regional radiation to the chest wall and draining lymphatics, combined with adjuvant chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, significantly improve survival in patients with node-positive breast cancer. However, the actual benefit of post-mastectomy radiotherapy and the desired extent of treatment are still debatable.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of postoperative loco-regional radiotherapy on local and regional recurrence and survival in breast cancer patients with four or more involved lymph nodes or extracapsular tumor extension.
METHODS: This controlled cli

PURPOSE: We present a rare clinical case of a metastatic spinal tumor in the 7th thoracic spine from male breast cancer (MBC).
METHOD: A 62-year-old man was referred as an outpatient, complaining of continuous pain in the back and right flank that began 2 weeks earlier. The patient had no neurologic signs or symptoms but had a medical history of left breast modified radical mastectomy because of MBC. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed metastasis in the T7 vertebra and no other metastasis on positron emission tomography/computed tomography or bone scan. Separation surger

BACKGROUND: Metastatic breast cancer originating in the gastrointestinal tract is a rare occurrence. The limited number of cases has resulted in incomplete understanding of the disease, making it challenging to differentiate from primary breast cancer. While clinical history and immunohistochemical studies can aid in distinguishing between the two, the management principles and pathogenesis of gastrointestinal metastatic breast cancer remain controversial. The scarcity of data has hampered comprehensive knowledge. Our objective is to shed light on this rare disease through our case study.

Axillary lymph nodes were separated from 492 radical or modified radical mastectomies for primary breast cancer and examined according to their anatomical level corresponding to their position along the theoretical pathway of lymph drainage from the breast. The patterns of metastasis and the relationship between metastatized levels and disease-free survival were investigated to see whether complete axillary dissection is necessary for the staging and the planning of adjuvant therapy in breast cancer. Progressive involvement from level I (proximal) to level III (distal) was found in 206 specime
