Seventh-grade students at-risk for school failure.

This study was designed to assess the effects of failure on the subsequent test performance in school of young adolescents. Fifty-one seventh-grade students, identified as at-risk for future school failure, were compared to 51 randomly selected classmates on individually administered measures of intelligence, self-concept, problem-solving ability, coping ability, attribution, and locus of control. Teachers' ratings, mathematics ability, and grades of the two groups were also compared. Students with a history of school failure, although of normal intelligence, were found to be significantly les

A simple coronary blood flow model to study the collateral flow index.

In this work, we present a novel modeling framework to investigate the effects of collateral circulation into the coronary blood flow physiology. A prototypical model of the coronary tree, integrated with the concept of Collateral Flow Index (CFI), is employed to gain insight about the role of model parameters associated with the collateral circuitry, which results in physically-realizable solutions for specific CFI data. Then, we discuss the mathematical feasibility of pressure-derived CFI, anatomical implications and practical considerations involving the estimation of model parameters in co

A novel strategy to identify the critical conditions for growth-induced instabilities.

Geometric instabilities in living structures can be critical for healthy biological function, and abnormal buckling, folding, or wrinkling patterns are often important indicators of disease. Mathematical models typically attribute these instabilities to differential growth, and characterize them using the concept of fictitious configurations. This kinematic approach toward growth-induced instabilities is based on the multiplicative decomposition of the total deformation gradient into a reversible elastic part and an irreversible growth part. While this generic concept is generally accepted and

Existence and uniqueness of well-posed fractional boundary value problem.

In this paper, the existence and uniqueness of solution for a fractional differential model involving well-posed boundary conditions and implicit fractional differential equation is considered. The desired goals are achieved by using Banach contraction principle and Scheafer's fixed point theorem. To show the results applicability some examples are presented. The basic mathematical concept of well-posed fractional boundary value issues is investigated in this study. It dives into the existence and uniqueness of these difficulties, offering light on the conditions that allow for both practical

The role of supporting and disruptive mechanisms of FT3 homeostasis in regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones are controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis through a complex network of regulatory loops, involving the hormones TRH, TSH, FT4, and FT3. The relationship between TSH and FT4 is widely used for diagnosing thyroid diseases. However, mechanisms of FT3 homeostasis are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: We used mathematical modelling to further examine mechanisms that exist in the HPT axis regulation for protecting circulating FT3 levels. METHODS: A mathematical model consisting of a system of four coupled first-order parameterized non-linear ordinar

Fuzzy multi-objective optimization model to design a sustainable closed-loop manufacturing system.

Republicans and Democrats practically everywhere have been demonstrating concerns about environmental conservation to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) since the turn of the century. To promote fuel (energy) savings and a reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide CO2 emissions in several enterprises, actions have been taken based on the concepts described. This study proposes an environmentally friendly manufacturing system designed to minimize environmental impacts. Specifically, it aims to develop a sustainable manufacturing process that accounts for energy consumption and CO2 emi

The role of time and pressure on alveolar recruitment.

Inappropriate mechanical ventilation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome can lead to ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) and increase the morbidity and mortality. Reopening collapsed lung units may significantly reduce VILI, but the mechanisms governing lung recruitment are unclear. We thus investigated the dynamics of lung recruitment at the alveolar level. Rats (n = 6) were anesthetized and mechanically ventilated. The lungs were then lavaged with saline to simulate acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A left thoracotomy was performed, and an in vivo microscope was

Modelling of Diffusion and Reaction of Carbon Dioxide and Nutrients in Biofilm for Optimal Design and Operation of Emerging Membrane Carbonated Microalgal Biofilm Photobioreactors.

The biological performance and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux of the novel and emerging concept of a membrane carbonated microalgal biofilm photobioreactor (MC-MBPBR) for wastewater treatment were investigated using mathematical modelling in conjunction with the finite-difference method. A set of differential equations was established to model the performance of an MC-MBPBR. The impacts of CO2 partial pressure, wastewater characteristics, and biofilm thickness on the concentration profiles and fluxes of CO2 and nutrients (N and P) to the biofilm of the MC-MBPBR were systematically studied. The mode

Designing a Digital Twin for Equitable Blood Donation Logistics in Geneva.

INTRODUCTION: Mobile blood drives can reach underrepresented donors, yet their planning rarely uses data-driven optimization. METHODS: We designed a digital twin with a four-layer architecture integrating GIS analysis and MILP optimization. Six accessibility indicators feed an objective function maximizing expected donations under operational constraints. RESULTS: An illustrative scenario shows evening slots yielding ∼25% more donations than midday, with Thursday evening peaking at 33-34 expected donations. CONCLUSION: This proof-of-concept demonstrates the feasibility of combining spatial

Image-informed modelling of microscale exchange in the human placenta.

The human placenta supports fetal development by mediating the exchange of gases, nutrients, drugs, and waste across a highly heterogeneous microscale interface formed by terminal villi. While placental transport has long been studied using simplified multiscale models, progress has been constrained by limited access to realistic microstructure geometries, uncertainty in barrier composition, and difficulties linking local geometries to organ-level measurements. Here, we review recent advances in placental imaging and mathematical modelling that are enabling better characterisation of microscal

Quantum information-based analysis of electron-deficient bonds.

Recently, the correlation theory of the chemical bond was developed, which applies concepts of quantum information theory for the characterization of chemical bonds, based on the multiorbital correlations within the molecule. Here, for the first time, we extend the use of this mathematical toolbox for the description of electron-deficient bonds. We start by verifying the theory on the textbook example of a molecule with three-center two-electron bonds, namely, diborane(6). We then show that the correlation theory of the chemical bond is able to properly describe the bonding situation in more e

Emergence of matched airway and vascular trees from fractal rules.

The bronchial, arterial, and venous trees of the lung are complex interwoven structures. Their geometries are created during fetal development through common processes of branching morphogenesis. Insights from fractal geometry suggest that these extensively arborizing trees may be created through simple recursive rules. Mathematical models of Turing have demonstrated how only a few proteins could interact to direct this branching morphogenesis. Development of the airway and vascular trees could, therefore, be considered an example of emergent behavior as complex structures are created from the

Tumor and liver determinants of prognosis in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma: a large case cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: 967 patients with unresectable and untransplantable, biopsy-proven hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were prospectively evaluated at baseline and followed up till death. Survival was the end point. RESULTS: We found that male gender, ascites, cirrhosis, portal vein thrombosis (PVT), elevated AFP or bilirubin, or alkaline phosphatase, were each statistically significant adverse prognostic factors. Patients with normal AFP survived longer than those with elevated AFP, even in the presence of PVT, large or bilobar tumors or cirrhosis. We used a bivariate analysis to separate patient sub

Modeling spatial evolution of multi-drug resistance under drug environmental gradients.

Multi-drug combinations to treat bacterial populations are at the forefront of approaches for infection control and prevention of antibiotic resistance. Although the evolution of antibiotic resistance has been theoretically studied with mathematical population dynamics models, extensions to spatial dynamics remain rare in the literature, including in particular spatial evolution of multi-drug resistance. In this study, we propose a reaction-diffusion system that describes the multi-drug evolution of bacteria based on a drug-concentration rescaling approach. We show how the resistance to drugs

Threshold dynamics of a HBV infection model with degenerate diffusion, DNA-containing capsids and time-delays in heterogeneous environment.

In this paper, we consider the global dynamics of a HBV infection model with degenerate diffusion, DNA-containing capsids and time-delays in heterogeneous environment. Since only the free virus equation contains a diffusion term, the model is partially degenerate, which makes that the solution semiflow lacks compactness. In addition, different to early works, the consideration of time-delay effect increases the difficulty in studying the dynamics of the model. To overcome these difficulties, we regard the model as a one-periodic system. Then, apply the method of Kuratowski's measure of non-com

The effect of dual-task cost on strategy execution in arithmetic with event-related potentials.

The present study adopted a dual-task paradigm manipulating operand presentation sequence (continuous vs. discontinuous) and a no-choice strategy adoption approach to investigate how stimulus presentation and response-related processes modulate strategy execution in dual-task scenarios. Participants completed a series of two-digit addition computational estimation tasks, in which they were required to use either the rounding-down (RD) strategy (e.g., calculating 50 + 80=130 for the problem 54 + 89) or the rounding-up (RU) strategy (e.g., calculating 60 + 90=150 for 54 + 89). These tasks were a

The Impact of Vacations on the Transmission Dynamics of Influenza A (H1N1).

The 2009 influenza A (H1N1) epidemic in China provided a unique natural experiment to evaluate school closures, as it overlapped with two school vacations. Utilizing the epidemiological data from this outbreak, our study specifically assesses the impact of holidays and systematically evaluates the efficacy of school-specific prevention measures in curbing influenza transmission. By using the enhanced piecewise linear representation model and calculating the effective reproduction number Rt, we divided the entire pandemic period into six stages. We employed the Susceptible-Exposed-Infective-Rem

Tracking Dynamics of Superspreading Through Contacts, Exposures, and Transmissions in Edge-Based Network Epidemics.

Infectious disease superspreading caused by heterogeneity in contact behavior has been observed to be an important determinant of epidemic dynamics and size in both empirical and theoretical settings. However, it has also been observed that the importance of this type of superspreading changes throughout an epidemic, generally in a decreasing manner as infections cascade from individuals with many contacts to those with fewer contacts. We provide an exact mathematical formulation of this phenomenon in strongly-immunizing (SIR) epidemics on static contact networks. Building on the edge-based mo
