Clefts of the hard palate with soft palate integrity can be produced through amniocentesis in Sprague-Dawley rats. This study attempted to induce exotic partial clefts of the palate and to describe their type, frequency and possible genesis. Palatal closure, i.e., elevation and fusion of the anterior zone, remodelling of the middle zone, and fusion in the posterior zone, occurs in rats between 16.0 and 17.5 days of fetal age. Withdrawing a small amount of amniotic fluid produced a series of total and rare partial clefts. The upper jaws of 95 of 410 fetuses of precisely determined age were exam

OBJECTIVES: Anomalies of the maxillofacial development concern 1 for 700 births. About 30% of prenatal diagnoses of isolated primary cleft palate or associated with a cleft of secondary palate will be corrected in postnatal. This retrospective observational study was designed to compare the antenatal data and postnatal diagnosis regarding a series of clefts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All children born between 1 December 2009 and 31 January 2014 in a prenatal diagnostic reference center and having a cleft palate were included. Newborns with an abnormality associated with the cleft were excluded.

Cleft palate is one of the most common maxillofacial birth defects, which can occur alone or accompany with many known deformities. Palatal selves need to complete the process of vertical growth, elevation, adhesion and fusion in a specific time window of embryo development. Any abnormality in this process will lead to cleft palate. Although previous studies have identified many molecular networks that regulate the growth, location and fusion of palatal selves, there are still many unknown mechanisms for palatal development. The pathogenesis of cleft palate has not been clarified so far. In re

Stylomandibular fusion is a poorly documented and rare complication of maxillofacial surgical procedures. This case report describes a patient presenting with stylomandibular false ankylosis following mandibular reconstruction. A 59-year-old female patient underwent segmental mandibular resection and reconstruction for a defect resulting from ameloblastoma surgery using an iliac crest free flap. A styloid fracture was detected postoperatively, and the patient was managed conservatively. In the third postoperative year, the patient presented with marked limitation of oral gape. A diagnosis of s

Changes in the size of the coronoid process, due to hyperplasia or hypoplasia, may interfere with the normal range of mouth opening. Coronoid hyperplasia is a rare oral and maxillofacial disease which might result in progressive limitation of mouth opening due to the impingement of an abnormal elongated mandibular coronoid process on the zygomatic arch. This condition presents with clinical challenges due to its nonspecific nature of complaints that present in patients. It is characterized by gradual painless restriction of mouth opening. Currently, the exact etiopathology still remains inconc

Mouth breathing is one of the most common deleterious oral habits in children. It often results from upper airway obstruction, making the air enter completely or partially through oral cavity. In addition to nasal obstruction caused by various kinds of nasal diseases, the pathological hypertrophy of adenoids and/or tonsils is often the main etiologic factor of mouth breathing in children. Uncorrected mouth breathing can result in abnormal dental and maxillofacial development and affect the health of dentofacial system. Mouth breathers may present various types of growth patterns and malocclusi

Endobronchial foreign bodies (EFBs) are present in various settings, such as eating or dental procedure. Accidental aspiration of foreign bodies is more common in children; however, cases of adult foreign body aspiration exist. Traumatic incidents can precipitate endobronchial aspiration of foreign bodies. Loss of consciousness, such as in coma, can result in foreign bodies being easily inhaled into the airways. Teeth or vehicle parts have been reported as EFBs following traumatic incidents. We report on a patient with chronic, sustained cough following maxillofacial trauma. Chest CT revealed

The aim of this study was to confirm the effectiveness of a real-time three-dimensional navigation system for use during various oral and maxillofacial surgeries. Five surgeries were performed with this real-time three-dimensional navigation system. For mandibular surgery, patients wore acrylic surgical splints when they underwent computed tomography examinations and the operation to maintain the mandibular position. The incidence of complications during and after surgery was assessed. No connection with the nasal cavity or maxillary sinus was observed at the maxilla during the operation. The

The prosthetic rehabilitation is a surgical alternative in functional-aesthetic facial reconstruction when the conventional reconstructive surgery cannot be applied either because of the psychophysical conditions of the patient or because of an excessive substance loss. From May 2002, 35 facial prosthesis (111 implants) have been positioned. Defects were congenital (N = 12), consequent to trauma (N = 8) and to demolitive surgery for malignant tumors (N= 8), and infection (N = 7). In 4 patients, implants were placed in previously irradiated areas. A total of 111 titanium implants were placed to

The shape of the human face and skull is largely genetically determined. However, the genomic basis of craniofacial morphology is incompletely understood and hypothesized to involve protein-coding genes, as well as gene regulatory sequences. We used a combination of epigenomic profiling, in vivo characterization of candidate enhancer sequences in transgenic mice, and targeted deletion experiments to examine the role of distant-acting enhancers in craniofacial development. We identified complex regulatory landscapes consisting of enhancers that drive spatially complex developmental expression p

Primary cilia are microtubule-based organelles that serve as hubs for the transduction of various developmental signaling pathways including Hedgehog, Wnt, FGF, and PDGF. Ciliary dysfunction contributes to a range of disorders, collectively known as the ciliopathies. Recently, interest has grown in these syndromes, particularly among craniofacial biologists, as many known and putative ciliopathies have severe craniofacial defects. Herein we discuss the current understanding of ciliary biology and craniofacial development in an attempt to gain insight into the molecular etiology for craniofacia

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis is used in the treatment of patients with syndromic and nonsyndromic class II mandibular hypoplasia. The three-dimensional distraction of the mandible is extremely complex. Past experience with mandibular distraction has demonstrated the indispensability of solid presurgical planning to achieve predictable results. We report a method for a virtual three-dimensional planning of the bilateral mandibular distraction with intraoperative transfer by stereolithographic guides. Five patients (mean age, 22.8 years) with bilateral mandibular hypoplasia were examined

Proper craniofacial development begins during gastrulation and requires the coordinated integration of each germ layer tissue (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm) and its derivatives in concert with the precise regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Neural crest cells, which are derived from ectoderm, are a migratory progenitor cell population that generates most of the cartilage, bone, and connective tissue of the head and face. Neural crest cell development is regulated by a combination of intrinsic cell autonomous signals acquired during their formation, balanced wi

This article describes the surgical and orthodontic treatment of a girl with facial deformities and functional involvement. The left temporomandibular joint was ankylosed, and the lower third of the face was markedly deficient, with mandibular retrusion and severe laterognathism to the left side. Mouth-opening was limited, and the patient had problems speaking and chewing. Two surgical procedures had been performed previously at another institution. We treated the patient with condylar surgery while she was still growing, followed by orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery after growth
