Measles induced remission of psoriasis.

A 6-year-old girl suffering from severe psoriasis had been treated unsuccessfully by various conventional methods. She developed measles and, on recovery from measles, the psoriasis soon cleared up and now, 6 months later, she still has had no further recurrence. The basic defect in psoriasis, basal cell hyperplasia and defective keratinization, may well be immunologically mediated. Measles virus, by its immunosuppressive effect can lead to remission of psoriasis.

Measles infection and Parkinson's disease.

A case-control analysis of Parkinson's disease and infections in childhood was conducted in a cohort of 50,002 men who attended Harvard Coll … childhood viral infections. The negative association was statistically significant for a history of measles prior to college entrance (exposure odds ratio = 0.53; 95% confidence limits: 0.31, 0.93). The reduced risk of Parkinson's disease among subjects with a positive history of measles in childhood may reflect an adverse effect of measles in adulthood o …

Adverse reactions to measles vaccine.

Adverse reactions to measles vaccine observed in children vaccinated between September, 1981 and May, 1983 in a Socio Sanitary Local Unit of Lombardy were studied. The adverse reactions more frequently reported by the parents were cough (18%), rash (12%), fever (9%), coryza (6%) and conjunctivitis (6%). Beginning September, 1982 a case-control study was started matching each vaccine with an unvaccinated child of the same age and sex. Statistically significant differences between vaccinated and controls have been observed only for rash and fever but not for the other symptoms. During the study …

Measles in Ghana--1973-1982.

Admissions of children with measles constituted 8.8% of all admissions to the paediatric medical service of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, over the ten-year-period 1973-1982. Measles remains endemic in urban Accra as in the towns of other developing nations. The peak of admissions occurred in the age range seven to 12 months. Complications were frequent, with a high mortality (16.86%). Bronchopneumonia, the commonest complication (63.9%) was also the commonest cause of death in 51.5% of cases. Comparative national case-mortality rates were, however, surprisingly low and should be accep…

Hospitalizations for measles, 1970-78.

The National Hospital Discharge Survey of the National Center for Health Statistics was analyzed for measles hospitalizations. From 1970-1978 there were an estimated 52,301 hospitalizations for measles, or approximately 5,800 per year. The median patient age was three years, and the median length of stay was four days. Forty-one per cent of the discharges listed respiratory complications, 10 per cent listed otitis media, and 3 per cent listed neurologic complications. Based on this analysis, hospitalizations for measles accounted for 314,063 hospital days during the period 1970-1978.

Measles virus and chronic infections.

The role of measles virus in persistent infections has been reviewed. Measles, normally a benign disease of children can give rise directly to complications (encephalitis, pneumonia) or after a period of months or years lead to a slow neurological infection (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis). The models, both "in vitro" and "in vivo", which have been developed to study the factors involved in measles virus persistence, are compared and related to the parameters observed in the human disease. The evidence that measles virus is associated with other long term diseases (multiple sclerosis, Pag…

Neurological complications following measles vaccination.

In Hamburg 18 cases of neurological complications following vaccination with live measles virus vaccine (including 2 cases of abortive encephalopathy) have been observed between 1971--1978. A causal connection was assumed in 14 cases, that means an incidence of 1 neurological complication per 2,500 vaccinees and an incidence of 1 abortive encephalopathy per 17,650 vaccinees. These results differ from studies of various countries which used the same vaccine strain (Schwarz). Clinical symptoms, age distribution and incubation period are demonstrated. The prognosis seems to be good; the risk of v…

[Epidemiology of measles (author's transl)].

A detailed analysis of epidemiology of measles in pre-vaccinal era is reported for both isolated, underdeveloped and developed populations, together with the most recent knowledge on epidemiological changes tooking place in those countries which introduced large-scale vaccination with live, further attenuated measles vaccines: reduction of morbidity mortality and complication rates, morbidity age shift, etc. Results obtained in U.S.A., where vaccination was introduced in 1963, are analyzed also considering that it never spanned above 66% of children 1-4 year. Suggestions derive after the ameri…

Pulmonary lesions in atypical measles.

Atypical measles is a well-described entity which has a high frequency of pulmonary involvement. Resolution and shrinkage of the pneumonic infiltrates into nodular mass-like lesions have been cited only once before. Three cases of atypical measles pneumonia are described which demonstrate these pulmonary nodular sequelae. In one of the cases examined a nodular residuum has now persisted for five months. Atypical measles pneumonia should be considered as a diagnostic possibility before invasive investigations are performed in a patient who has a pulmonary nodule.

Measles pneumonia in childhood leukemia.

Fatal measles pneumonia developed in a 7-year-old boy who was in complete remission from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. There was no detectable antibody titer in two specimens taken eight days apart. Measles virus was grown from a lung biopsy taken shortely after hospital admission. Classical measles had been diagnosed in the patient and his siblings nine months previously. Immunosuppressed children who do not develop an antibody rise after a measles infection are at risk of later development of measles giant cell pneumonia. Suggestions are offered for the prevention of this often fatal complic…
