Is exposure to online misogyny associated with mental health outcomes in girls and young women? A systematic review of longitudinal studies.

IntroductionThe mental health gender gap is well established, but there is limited understanding of why girls and young women consistently report higher rates of common mental health conditions. The emergence of online misogyny has garnered attention in recent years, highlighted in cultural debate surrounding extremist influencers and the 'manosphere'. Understanding the mental health impacts of online misogyny on girls, young women and gender-diverse people is essential given the growing prevalence of gender-based harm in digital spaces.ObjectivesTo establish whether exposure to online misogyn

Associations between social media use, body mass index, and body image among pregnant women.

BACKROUND: Body image during pregnancy is an important psychosocial factor that influences maternal well-being. Emerging evidence suggests that both social media exposure and body mass index (BMI) may shape body image perceptions during this period. This study examined the associations between social media use, BMI, and body image in pregnant women. METHODS: This cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted with 272 pregnant women recruited through convenience sampling from the gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinics of a state hospital in the Mediterranean region o…

Single-shot non-invasive imaging through highly dynamic scattering media via autocorrelation-domain deconvolution.

Imaging through dynamic scattering media remains challenging, because speckle patterns decorrelate during camera exposure. Here, we present a physics-based single-shot non-invasive imaging framework for dynamic scattering media. Enhancing speckle correlation imaging, the dynamically blurred autocorrelation is restored through autocorrelation-domain deconvolution using an analytical blur kernel. The restored autocorrelation is subsequently used for object recovery, with phase retrieval or a physics-informed network under severe degradation. Experimental results on dynamic ground glass and biolo

#Ebola: Emergency Risk Messages on Social Media.

Public health threats require effective communication. Evaluating effectiveness during a situation that requires emergency risk communication is difficult, however, because these events require an immediate response and collecting data may be secondary to more immediate needs. In this article, we draw on research analyzing the effectiveness of social media messages during times of imminent threat and research analyzing the emergency risk communication conceptual model in order to propose a method for evaluating emergency risk communication on social media. We demonstrate this method by evaluat

Change in Advertising Exposure of Unhealthy Commodities After the Implementation of an Outdoor Advertising Restrictions Policy in Bristol, UK: A Descriptive Study.

In 2021, Bristol, UK, implemented a city-wide policy restricting advertising of unhealthy commodities on council-owned sites. We aimed to describe advertising exposure before and after the implementation of the policy in Bristol. We collected data from bus shelters in Bristol (N = 283) and neighboring South Gloucestershire (SG, comparator, N = 65), using in-person and Google Street View audits, before (T0, 02/2022 - 07/2022) and after (T1, 04/2023 - 07/2023 and T2, 11/2023 - 02/2024) policy implementation. We captured unhealthy commodity adverts on display; high in fat, sugar or salt (HFSS) pr

The Stability and Anti-Angiogenic Properties of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) Using Caco-2 Cells.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) are found in a wide range of products such as sunscreen, paints, toothpaste and cosmetics due to their white pigment and high refractive index. These wide-ranging applications could result in direct or indirect exposure of these NPs to humans and the environment. Accordingly, conflicting levels of toxicity has been associated with these NPs. Therefore, the risk associated with these reports and for TiO2NPs produced using varying methodologies should be measured. This study aimed to investigate the effects of various media on TiO2NP properties (hydrodyna

Household crowding associated with childhood otitis media hospitalisations in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between hospitalisations for otitis media and area-level measures of household crowding among children in New Zealand. METHODS: Counts of hospital admissions for otitis media by census area unit were offset against population data from the 2006 national census. Area-level household crowding, exposure to tobacco smoke in the home, equivalised income and individual-level characteristics age and sex were adjusted for. To examine effect modification by ethnicity, three separate poisson models were examined for the total, Māori and non-Māori populations. RESU

Exploring the influence of user-generated content on alcohol-related attitudes and behaviours among young people: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol-related content on social media, particularly user-generated content (UGC), is an increasingly normal feature of young people's digital lives and has been linked to increased alcohol use; however, a critical gap remains in understanding how different subgroups of young people are exposed to and engage with such content, and how this may be associated with their alcohol-related attitudes and behaviours. This systematic review aimed to synthesise evidence on the association between alcohol-related UGC and young people's alcohol-related attitudes and behaviours, and t

The Effect of Different Flushing Media Used to Aspirate Follicles on the Outcome of a Commercial Ovum Pickup-ICSI Program in Mares.

The in vitro production of embryos by ovum pickup (OPU) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is gaining popularity among horse breeders and veterinarians. Various collection media are available for flushing follicles during OPU. The objective of this study was to determine whether the type of flushing media used to aspirate follicles and collect oocytes influences the outcome of a commercial equine OPU-ICSI program. Two commercial embryo flushing media (EFM1 and EFM2) supplemented with heparin were compared with a flushing media designed specifically for the collection of oocytes (oocyt

Probing the role of calcium in erythrocyte microvesicle formation during short exposure to high shear stress.

Erythrocyte-derived microvesicles have been reported to be elevated in patients exposed to supraphysiological shear stress in the context of blood-contacting medical devices, and they have also been implicated in thrombosis and inflammation. Intracellular calcium has been proposed as a mediator of erythrocyte vesiculation. However, whether intracellular calcium accumulation is necessary for microvesicle formation under the short millisecond duration, high-intensity shear conditions present clinically remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether calcium accumulation is necessary for

Bile acids in combination with low pH induce oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage: relevance to the pathogenesis of Barrett's oesophagus.

BACKGROUND: Barrett's oesophagus is a premalignant condition associated with an increased risk for the development of oesophageal adenocarcinoma (ADCA). Previous studies indicated that oxidative damage contributes to the development of ADCA. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that bile acids and gastric acid, two components of refluxate, can induce oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage. METHODS: Oxidative stress was evaluated by staining Barrett's oesophagus tissues with different degrees of dysplasia with 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) antibody. The levels of 8-OH-dG were also evalua

Otitis media in 2253 Pittsburgh-area infants: prevalence and risk factors during the first two years of life.

OBJECTIVE: As part of a long-term study of possible effects of early-life otitis media on speech, language, cognitive, and psychosocial development, we set out to delineate the occurrence and course of otitis media during the first 2 years of life in a sociodemographically diverse population of infants, and to identify related risk factors. METHODS: We enrolled healthy infants by age 2 months who presented for primary care at one of two urban hospitals or one of two small town/rural and four suburban private pediatric practices. We intensively monitored the infants' middle-ear status by pneum

Choroid plexus extracellular vesicle transport of blood-borne insulin-like growth factor 1 to the hippocampus of the immature brain.

Reduced serum level of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a major regulator of perinatal development, in extremely preterm infants has been shown to be associated with neurodevelopmental impairment. To clarify the mechanism of IGF-1 transport at the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier of the immature brain, we combined studies of in vivo preterm piglet and rabbit models with an in vitro transwell cell culture model of neonatal primary murine choroid plexus epithelial (ChPE) cells. We identified IGF-1-positive intracellular vesicles in ChPE cells and provided data indicating a directiona

Intercellular communication of cellular stress monitored by gamma-H2AX induction.

When cells are exposed to ionizing radiation (IR), unexposed cells that share media with damaged cells exhibit similar effects to irradiated cells including increased levels of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Hypothesizing that this effect, known as the radiation-induced bystander effect, may be a specific instance of communication between damaged and undamaged cells regardless of damage source, we demonstrated that exposure of target cells to non-IR induces bystander damage in non-targeted cells as measured by gamma-H2AX and 53BP1 focal formation. Initially, bystander damage was found primar

Quantifying volatile organic compounds in porous media: effects of sampling method attributes, contaminant characteristics and environmental conditions.

Understanding how sampling methods can impact the accuracy of volatile organic compound (VOC) measurements in samples of soil and subsurface porous media is often critical to sound decision making during characterization and remediation of VOC contaminated sites. In this study, the accuracy of VOC measurements was investigated using an experimental apparatus packed with sandy porous media and contaminated with known levels of VOCs, which could be sampled using different methods under variable, but controlled, conditions. Five sampling methods were examined representing different degrees of por

Cigarette smoke preparations, not electronic nicotine delivery system preparations, induce features of lung disease in a 3D lung repeat-dose model.

Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for several lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer. The potential health effects of chronic use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is unclear. This study utilized fully differentiated primary normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cultures in a repeat-dose exposure to evaluate and compare the effect of combustible cigarette and ENDS preparations. We show that 1-h daily exposure of NHBE cultures over a 10-day period to combustible cigarette whole smoke-conditioned media (WS-CM) incr
