Improving the sensitivity and specificity of the abbreviated injury scale coding system.

The Abbreviated Injury Scale with Epidemiologic Modifications (AIS 85-EM) was developed to make it possible to code information about anatomic injury types and locations that, although generally available from medical records, is not codable under the standard Abbreviated Injury Scale, published by the American Association for Automotive Medicine in 1985 (AIS 85). In a population-based sample of 3,223 motor vehicle trauma cases, 68 percent of the patients had one or more injuries that were coded to the AIS 85 body region nonspecific category external. When the same patients' injuries were code

A story of falsification and authentication: Authenticity control of phytopharmaceuticals and herbal remedies.

Natural remedies and phytopharmaceuticals are gaining popularity among both consumers and patients who seek a healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Healthcare professionals are also increasingly incorporating phytopharmaceuticals into therapeutic practices, recognizing their potential benefits for overall health and well-being. This trend is further driven by a growing distrust of synthetic compounds and dissatisfaction with conventional medical treatments, prompting many patients to explore natural alternatives. As a result, the demand for phytopharmaceuticals, essential oils

Tricobalt tetraselenide nanoparticles improve intestinal barrier function by reshaping the gut microbiota and fortifying epithelial tight junctions.

The disrupted intestinal mechanical barrier contributes to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irradiation-induced intestinal injury (IRIII), both of which lack sufficient medical countermeasures currently. Reshaping the gut microbiota to increase the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels is instrumental for fortifying the mechanical barrier and mitigating these diseases. Inspired by the fact that supplementation of essential trace elements selenium (Se) and cobalt (Co) can enrich SCFA-producing bacteria and promote microbial fermentation, respectively, we prepared tricobal…

BALB/c mice challenged with SARS-CoV-2 B.1.351 β variant cause pathophysiological and neurological changes within the lungs and brains.

Up to one-third of individuals suffering from acute SARS-CoV-2 infection with the onset of severe-to-mild diseases could develop several symptoms of neurological disorders, which could last long after resolving the infection, known as neuro-COVID. Effective therapeutic treatments for neuro-COVID remain unavailable, in part, due to the absence of animal models for studying its underlying mechanisms and developing medical countermeasures against it. Here, we explored the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the well-being of respiratory and neurological functions of BALB/c mice by using a clinical …

Endothelial Dysfunction and Impaired Wound Healing Following Radiation Combined Skin Wound Injury.

Currently, there are no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medical countermeasures (MCMs) for radiation combined injury (RCI), partially due to limited understanding of its mechanisms. Our previous research suggests that endothelial dysfunction may contribute to a poor prognosis of RCI. In this study, we demonstrated an increased risk of mortality, body weight loss, and delayed skin wound healing in RCI mice compared to mice with skin wounds alone or radiation injury (RI) 30 days post-insult. Furthermore, we evaluated biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and impai…

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron neutralization by therapeutic antibodies, convalescent sera, and post-mRNA vaccine booster.

UNLABELLED: The rapid spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 along with its high number of mutations in the spike gene has raised alarm about the effectiveness of current medical countermeasures. To address this concern, we measured neutralizing antibodies against Omicron in three important settings: (1) post-vaccination sera after two and three immunizations with the Pfizer/BNT162b2 vaccine, (2) convalescent sera from unvaccinated individuals infected by different variants, and (3) clinical-stage therapeutic antibodies. Using a pseudovirus neutralization assay, we found…

A turn-on fluorescent probe based on N-(rhodamine-B)-thiolactam-2-n-butane with ionic liquids for selective and sensitive detection of mustard gas stimulant.

Sulfur mustard (SM) is recognized as one of the most lethal warfare agents. It has the potential to seriously affect public health and safety. To employ appropriate medical countermeasures and treat victims as quickly as possible, the development of a rapid and simple SM detection technique is crucial. The aim of the present study was to explore novel detection systems exhibiting excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. An SM probe, namely N-(rhodamine-B)-thiolactam-2-n-butane (SRB-NB), which was based on a thiolactam structure, was effectively designed and synthesized. The rhodamine and th…

Retrospective biodosimetry techniques: Focus on cytogenetics assays for individuals exposed to ionizing radiation.

In the absence of physical data, biodosimetry tools are required for fast dose and risk assessment in the event of radiological or nuclear mass accidents or attacks to triage exposed humans and take immediate medical countermeasures. Biodosimetry tools have mostly been developed for retrospective dose assessment and the follow-up of victims of irradiation. Among them, cytogenetics analyses, to reveal chromosome damage, are the most developed and allow the determination of doses from blood samples as low as 100 mGy. Various cytogenetic tests have already allowed retrospective dose assessment of…

Data, disease and diplomacy: GISAID's innovative contribution to global health.

The international sharing of virus data is critical for protecting populations against lethal infectious disease outbreaks. Scientists must rapidly share information to assess the nature of the threat and develop new medical countermeasures. Governments need the data to trace the extent of the outbreak, initiate public health responses, and coordinate access to medicines and vaccines. Recent outbreaks suggest, however, that the sharing of such data cannot be taken for granted - making the timely international exchange of virus data a vital global challenge. This article undertakes the first an…

Interwoven support: an historical survey of US federal programs enabling immunization.

The US Government (USG) can date its involvement with immunization to military and civilian efforts in 1777 and 1813 to prevent smallpox. USG involvement began accelerating with federal licensing of vaccine and antibody manufacturers in 1903. In addition to ongoing regulation of manufacturing and product quality, military and civilian arms of the USG have led research efforts into new or improved vaccines. These efforts have included diseases endemic in the United States, as well as medical countermeasures targeted against biological weapons, influenza pandemics, and emerging infectious diseas…

Aerosolized rift valley fever virus causes fatal encephalitis in african green monkeys and common marmosets.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a veterinary and human disease in Africa and the Middle East. The causative agent, RVF virus (RVFV), can be naturally transmitted by mosquito, direct contact, or aerosol. We sought to develop a nonhuman primate (NHP) model of severe RVF in humans to better understand the pathogenesis of RVF and to use for evaluation of medical countermeasures. NHP from four different species were exposed to aerosols containing RVFV. Both cynomolgus and rhesus macaques developed mild fevers after inhalation of RVFV, but no other clinical signs were noted and no macaque succumbed to RV…

Evaluation of the efficacy of modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA)/IMVAMUNE against aerosolized rabbitpox virus in a rabbit model.

Infection of rabbits with aerosolized rabbitpox virus (RPXV) produces a disease similar to monkeypox and smallpox in humans and provides a valuable, informative model system to test medical countermeasures against orthopoxviruses. Due to the eradication of smallpox, the evaluation of the efficacy of new-generation smallpox vaccines depends on relevant well-developed animal studies for vaccine licensure. In this study, we tested the efficacy of IMVAMUNE [modified vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN)] for protecting rabbits against aerosolized RPXV. Rabbits were vaccinated with either phosph…
