Cases of rickettsiosis of all kinds have reduced to mere sporadic episodes in the last thirty years all over the Mediterranean. But in the last five years, some regions of Italy (Lazio, Liguria, Sicily, Sardinia) have registered an extraordinary epidemiological event, the endemoepidemic expansion of boutonneuse fever which was previously only seen in about thirty cases a year. OBJECTIVES: Enthesitis-related arthritis (ERA), is a complex genetic disease. Although HLA-B27 is well established, it does not explain all the genetic load in ERA. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), caused by mutations in the MEFV gene, is a frequent autoinflammatory disorder in the eastern Mediterranean.
METHODS: We investigated the clinical and imaging features of 53 ERA patients, as well as the frequency of MEFV gene mutations in those who were HLA-B27 negative.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs are susceptible to severe infections such as leishmaniasis. As L. infantum is endemic in the Mediterranean region, it is necessary to rule this infectious process out in any RA patient presenting with fever and pancytopenia. An early diagnosis based on a high suspicion can prevent a fatal outcome.

The Marseilles area continues to be an endemic region of mediterranean tick bite fever. During the period 1975-1978 40 cases were observed in two medical departments in Marseilles. Maximum occurrence was in August. The real incidence of the disease was difficult to appreciate as declaration is not always made eventhough obligatory. Clinical manifestations remained typical.

The cranial and mandibular fragments of the medium-sized canid from the Early Pleistocene locality of Taurida cave (about 1.8-1.5 Ma) in Crimea are described and included in the hypodigm of the species Canis etruscus Forsyth Major, 1877, a common member of the Late Villafranchian fauna of the Circum-Mediterranean region. This species is reported for the first time from the Northern Black Sea region. The discovered evidence reinforce previous published idea regarding the periodically use of the Taurida cave by canids and other large predators as a den and shelter.

Ticks are important vectors of various microorganisms, including bacteria. In this study, we examined Hyalomma aegyptium ticks collected from 240 spur-thighed tortoises Testudo graeca at 42 localities in the Mediterranean and Middle East and analysed them for the presence of bacteria of the genera Anaplasma, Borrelia, Coxiella, and Rickettsia. Altogether, 576 out of 928 analysed ticks (62.1%) were positive for at least one of the tested bacteria. We have carried out a study of breast cancer in Spanish families in which the entire coding region of the BRCA1 gene have been analyzed. To identify BRCA1 mutations, PTT and CSGE methods were used followed by direct sequencing. We investigated 51 breast cancer women with a family history. Among these we have identified 7 frameshifts mutations (15%), 185delAG (4 times), 1623del5 and 3450del4 (2 times), and 3 missense mutations, Ser1613Gly, Met1652Ile and Ala1708Glu, which are likely polymorphisms. Sandfly fever virus, serotype Toscana (TOS), is endemic in some Mediterranean countries and causes sandfly fever (pappataci fever). In some patients, TOS may cause meningitis and meningoencephalitis. We report on two German adults returning from Italy with TOS-related meningitis, complicated in one case by abducens nerve palsy. TOS infection should be considered as a cause of acute central nervous system disorders in patients returning from areas of endemicity.

A comprehensive study of the efficiency of synchronization of ovulation and timed artificial insemination (TAI) was undertaken in a large group of Italian Mediterranean buffaloes at a commercial dairy.
