Episodic foresight deficits in regular, but not recreational, cannabis users.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use is associated with a range of neurocognitive deficits, including impaired episodic memory. However, no study to date has assessed whether these difficulties extend to episodic foresight, a core component of which is the ability to mentally travel into one's personal future. This is a particularly surprising omission given that episodic memory is considered to be critical to engage episodic foresight. AIMS: In the present study, we provide the first test of how episodic foresight is affected in the context of differing levels of cannabis use, and the degree to which pe

Imagining the future: The core episodic simulation network dissociates as a function of timecourse and the amount of simulated information.

Neuroimaging data indicate that episodic memory (i.e., remembering specific past experiences) and episodic simulation (i.e., imagining specific future experiences) are associated with enhanced activity in a common set of neural regions, often referred to as the core network. This network comprises the hippocampus, parahippocampal cortex, lateral and medial parietal cortex, lateral temporal cortex, and medial prefrontal cortex. Evidence for a core network has been taken as support for the idea that episodic memory and episodic simulation are supported by common processes. Much remains to be lea

Behavioral and functional neuroanatomical correlates of anterograde autobiographical memory in isolated retrograde amnesic patient M.L.

Patient M.L. [Levine, B., Black, S. E., Cabeza, R., Sinden, M., Mcintosh, A. R., Toth, J. P., et al. (1998). Episodic memory and the self in a case of isolated retrograde amnesia. Developmental amnesia: Fractionation of developing memory systems.

Study of the developmental amnesias utilizing a cognitive neuropsychological methodology has highlighted the dissociations that may occur between the development of components of memory. M.M., a new case of developmental amnesia, was identified after screening from the normal population on cognitive and memory measures. Retrospective investigation found that he was of low birthweight. M.M. had impaired semantic memory for knowledge of facts and words. There was impaired episodic memory for words and stories but intact episodic memory for visual designs and features. This forms a double dissoci

Neuronal and glial dysfunction, white matter hyperintensities and cognition in ageing and Alzheimer's disease.

This cross-sectional study examined associations between multiple fluid biomarkers of neuronal and glial dysfunction (plasma neurofilament light chain, CSF growth-associated protein 43 and CSF soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2), total white matter hyperintensity volume and episodic memory and executive function performance in the context of Alzheimer's disease biomarker status. A total of 563 participants (mean age = 71.9 years, standard deviation = 7.2) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative were classified by the amyloid-β/tau/neurodegeneration framework

Elaboration Benefits Source Memory Encoding Through Centrality Change.

Variations in levels of processing affect memory encoding and subsequent retrieval performance, but it is unknown how processing depth affects communication patterns within the network of interconnected brain regions involved in episodic memory encoding. In 113 healthy adults scanned with functional MRI, we used graph theory to calculate centrality indices representing the brain regions' relative importance in the memory network. We tested how communication patterns in 42 brain regions involved in episodic memory encoding changed as a function of processing depth, and how these changes were re

Visual-spatial learning and memory in schizotypal personality disorder: continued evidence for the importance of working memory in the schizophrenia spectrum.

Verbal episodic memory deficits, a well-established feature of the schizophrenia spectrum, have also been found in individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), although visual-spatial episodic memory has proven harder to examine. To address this, we administered the Visual Object Learning Test (VOLT), a measure of visual-spatial learning and memory, as well as the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and a verbal working memory test, to 50 individuals with SPD, 19 with other personality disorders (OPD), and 17 healthy volunteers. Compared to both other groups, individuals with SP

Limitations of standard memory assessments in breast cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide, and treatments like chemotherapy are often linked to post-treatment cognitive impairments, including memory deficits. Standardized episodic memory tests may fail to capture the nuanced, real-world aspects of memory, potentially underestimating impairments in cancer survivors. This study seeks to investigate the impact of cancer treatment on episodic memory in breast cancer survivors (BCS) by comparing standard cognitive measures with ecologically valid measures of naturalistic memory, which may capture the subt

Involuntary autobiographical memories as a transdiagnostic factor in mental disorders.

Involuntary autobiographical memories are memories of personal events that come to mind with no preceding retrieval attempts. They have been studied broadly in autobiographical memory for decades and shown to be common and mostly positive in everyday life. Clinical literature has focused on negative intrusive memories of stressful events and tended to neglect other forms of involuntary autobiographical memories. However, recently, there has been an upsurge of research addressing involuntary memories more broadly in clinical disorders, including both stressful and mundane memories, and both rea

Hippocampal Revolutions.

New concepts build on research on the rodent hippocampus, but go beyond that to understand how the hippocampal system operates in primates including humans. First, in rodents place cells and entorhinal cortex grid cells represent the place where the individual is located, but in primates including humans, many hippocampal system neurons respond to spatial view, to where the individual looks in space. Second, rodent navigation is described from place to place, but in primates including humans, the highly developed foveal visual system and hippocampal spatial view cells allow use of visual landm

Further advancing theories of retrieval of the personal past.

In our target article, we presented the idea that involuntary autobiographical memories (IAMs) and déjà vu may both be based on the same retrieval processes. Our core claim was thus straightforward: Both can be described as "involuntary" or spontaneous cognitions, where IAMs deliver content and déjà vu delivers only the feeling of retrieval. Our proposal resulted in 27 commentaries covering a broad range of perspectives and approaches. The majority of them have not only amplified our key arguments but also pushed our ideas further by offering extensions, refinements, discussing possible implic

Illegal drug use and prospective memory: A systematic review.

Illegal drug use is proposed to interfere with neurobiological functioning by damaging the neurotransmitter communication systems that are believed to be responsible for cognitive abilities, including perception, attention, and memory. This review specifically examined effects of illegal drug use on prospective memory (PM) - memory for future actions. Twenty- seven studies spanning 14 years were included in this review which were divided into two broad categories based on testing methods used: self-report and lab-based testing methods. The quality of the included studies was assessed across fi

[Autobiographical memory in depressive disorders].

Contemporary research studies regarding autobiographical memory (AM) indicate that its deficits have a significant impact on the development of mental disorders. We find particularly many reports regarding the comorbidity of AM deficits and depressive disorders. The characteristic feature of AM in the people suffering from depressive disorders is the presence of overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM), i.e. the reminiscences which contain a summary of many emotion-laden situations, yet without significant detail. This type of reminiscences is observed in the patients with depressive disorder

A Brief Overview of Research into the Forgot-It-All-Along Effect.

People often have difficulties remembering prior episodes of remembering, a phenomenon known as the forgot-it-all-along (FIA) effect. Although the effect was first discovered among victims of spontaneously recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse, laboratory paradigms of the FIA have shown that difficulties in remembering "remembering" can be elicited when the memory was previously recalled in a different context. Although much attention has been paid to establishing the robustness of the FIA phenomenon, little emphasis has been placed on the cognitive mechanisms underlying the effect. The

Reversible functional connectivity disturbances during transient global amnesia.

OBJECTIVE: Transient global amnesia (TGA), an abrupt occurrence of severe anterograde episodic amnesia accompanied by repetitive questioning, has been known for more than 50 years. Despite extensive research, there is no clear evidence for the underlying pathophysiological basis of TGA. Moreover, there is no neuroimaging method to evaluate TGA in real time. METHODS: Here we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging recorded in 12 patients during the acute phase of TGA together with connectivity and cluster analyses to detect changes in the episodic memory network in TGA. Enhanced declarative memory in long-term mindfulness practitioners.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness meditation (MM) practice is considered to benefit physical and mental health. In particular, several studies have shown a beneficial effect of MM practice on memory performance. However, it is still not clear how long-term training affects long-term declarative memory. In this study we aimed to examine whether long-term MM training impacts declarative memory formation for diverse memoranda types, as well as the role of trait mindfulness, and the possible mediating role of anxiety. METHODS: We examined long-term memory performance in 23 experienced MM practitioners and

Autobiographical memory and amnesia: using conceptual knowledge to ground the self.

A case of retrograde amnesia, PJM, elucidated the relationship between self, episodic memory and autobiographical knowledge. Results from a variety of measures including the I Am Memory Task (IAM Task), where memories are cued by self-generated self concepts, demonstrate that PJM has a coherent, continuous sense of self, despite having lost episodic memories for an 18-month period. Her use of conceptual autobiographical knowledge, in episodic tasks and to support aspects of identity, shows how autobiographical knowledge can support the self when episodic memories are inaccessible. These result

Neurons as will and representation.

Memory recollections and voluntary actions are often perceived as spontaneously generated irrespective of external stimuli. Although products of our neurons, they are only rarely accessible in humans at the neuronal level. Here I review insights gleaned from unique neurosurgical opportunities to record and stimulate single-neuron activity in people who can declare their thoughts, memories and wishes. I discuss evidence that the subjective experience of human recollection and that of voluntary action arise from the activity of two internal neuronal generators, the former from medial temporal lo

Has multiple trace theory been refuted?

Multiple trace theory (Nadel & Moscovitch, Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 1997, 7, 217-227) has proven to be one of the most novel and influential recent memory theories, and played an essential role in shifting perspective on systems-level memory consolidation. Here, we briefly review its impact and testable predictions and focus our discussion primarily on nonhuman animal experiments. Perhaps, the most often supported claim is that episodic memory tasks should exhibit comparable severity of retrograde amnesia (RA) for recent and remote memories after extensive damage to the hippocampus (HP
