Effect of a Cognitive-Behavioral Prevention Program on Depression 6 Years After Implementation Among At-Risk Adolescents: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Adolescents whose parents have a history of depression are at risk for developing depression and functional impairment. The long-term effects of prevention programs on adolescent depression and functioning are not known. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a cognitive-behavioral prevention (CBP) program reduced the incidence of depressive episodes, increased depression-free days, and improved developmental competence 6 years after implementation. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A 4-site randomized clinical trial compared the effect of CBP plus usual care vs usual care, through fol

Task Sharing or Task Dumping: Counsellors Experiences of Delivering a Psychosocial Intervention for Mental Health Problems in South Africa.

Given task-sharing mental health counselling to non-specialist providers is a recognised strategy to increase service capacity, ensuring that their training, supervision, and support needs are met is necessary to facilitate the sustainable delivery of a high-quality service. Using in-depth interviews, we qualitatively explored the experiences of 18 facility-based counsellors (FBCs) tasked with delivering a counselling intervention within chronic disease services offered within primary care facilities participating in the project MIND cluster randomised controlled trial. Findings show that proj

Parent-focused online video intervention for promoting parenting sense of competence: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Apart from child behavioral problems which were ameliorated by increasing parenting skills, parental well-being is one of the important components for development of parenting sense of competence (PSOC), which subsequently affects parenting style and child outcomes. This randomized controlled trial study aims to determine whether a brief asynchronous parent-focused online video intervention (POVI) that was easily accessible would be effective in increasing PSOC and parental well-being. METHODS: One hundred and twenty parents, with a poor Thai Mental Health Indicators-15 score or m

How much do doctors know about consent and capacity?

To assess knowledge of capacity issues across different medical specialties we conducted a cross-sectional survey with a structured questionnaire at academic meetings, lectures and conferences. Of 190 individuals who received the questionnaire 129 (68%) responded-35 general practitioners, 31 psychiatrists, 29 old-age physicians [corrected] and 34 final year medical students. Correct answers on capacity to consent to or refuse medical treatment were given by 58% of the psychiatrists, 34% of the geriatricians, 20% of the general practitioners and 15% of the students. 15% of all respondents wrong

Competencies and clinical guidelines for managing acne with isotretinoin in general practice: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common, chronic, and burdensome disease. There is evidence of delayed and inequitable patient access to isotretinoin. Overuse of antibiotics in patients with acne raises antimicrobial stewardship concerns. AIM: To identify clinical practice guideline (CPG) and consensus statement recommendations regarding the clinical competencies required for prescribing oral isotretinoin for acne. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a scoping review of acne CPGs and consensus statements, globally. METHOD: The Arksey and O'Malley framework informed design in conjunction with Joanna Briggs In

Intercultural pathways to indigenous mental health: the integration of ayahuasca in community care in the Yaqui intercultural medicine clinic in Sonora, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous peoples experience substantial mental health and substance use disparities while remaining underserved by conventional healthcare systems. Despite growing evidence for psychedelic-assisted therapies, Indigenous knowledge systems and Indigenous-led models of psychedelic care remain underrepresented. This paper describes the establishment and implementation of the Yaqui Intercultural Medicine Clinic in Sonora, Mexico, an Indigenous-led, community-based program integrating ayahuasca within an intercultural therapeutic framework. METHODS: We present a community case study d

Dementia subtype specification and cognitive evidence visibility in Turkish Court of Cassation decisions: a document analysis of 1,031 decisions (2005-2025).

BACKGROUND: Dementia is frequently invoked in medico-legal contexts where questions of legal capacity, guardianship, testamentary validity, transactional validity, and criminal responsibility arise. Although subtype differentiation and cognitive assessment are central to clinical dementia evaluation, it remains unclear to what extent such clinically meaningful detail is visible in appellate judicial reasoning. This study examined the visibility of dementia subtype specification and cognitive evidence in decisions of the Turkish Court of Cassation (2005-2025), and examined the ethical implicati

Yoga as salutogenic health promotion across displacement contexts: a culturally responsive public mental health synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Global displacement is a major public mental health concern shaped by conflict, protracted geopolitical instability, disrupted social worlds, and structural inequities. Yoga is increasingly discussed within health promotion as a potentially accessible and adaptable practice. However, much of the existing literature has prioritized symptom-based outcomes and has rarely been situated within displacement-informed public mental health frameworks attentive to structural vulnerability, cultural heterogeneity, and ethical implementation conditions. METHODS: This study undertakes a struct

Cultural Competence in the Treatment of Addictions: Theory, Practice and Evidence.

Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations often have high rates of addictive disorders, but lower rates of treatment seeking and completion than the mainstream population. A significant barrier to treatment is the lack of culturally relevant and appropriate treatment. A literature review was conducted to identify relevant literature related to cultural competence in mental health services delivery and specifically treatment for addictive disorders. Several theoretical models of cultural competence in therapy have been developed, but the lack of rigorous research limits the empir

Navigating Organizational Challenges and Formal Support for Afghan Refugee Women in California Amid Covid-19 and the Taliban's Takeover.

Afghan refugee women in the United States are facing mental health challenges due to COVID-19 and the 2021 Taliban takeover. Given the key role of formal support in refugees' mental health, in this study we examined the effectiveness, barriers, and facilitators of formal support from governmental and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) by interviewing 34 Afghan refugee women and 18 refugee service providers in California. Results indicated sufficient formal support was received by women in areas like food/grocery assistance, COVID-related programs, financial aid, and referral services. Howeve

Factors associated with disallowance of compulsory mental healthcare referrals.

OBJECTIVE: Norwegian studies report that a substantial amount of referrals for compulsory mental health care are disallowed at specialist assessment, at a rate that varies with referring agent. Knowledge on factors associated with disallowance could improve the practice of compulsory mental health care. This study aims to examine such factors, placing particular emphasis on the impact of referring agents. METHOD: This study utilized data from the prospective, longitudinal cohort study 'Suicidality in Psychiatric Emergency Admissions' conducted at a Norwegian psychiatric emergency unit which s

Developing Psychotherapy Competency in PMHNP Students Through the Curricular Integration of Simulation, Experiential Learning, and Self-Reflective Practice.

BACKGROUND: Developing competent psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) psychotherapists requires supporting students' movement from a biomedical outcome-orientated toward a dynamic, process-oriented paradigm. Experiential learning methods provide a robust framework for achieving entry-level competence. OBJECTIVE: This study describes and evaluates an integrative teaching strategy combining didactic content, self-applied psychotherapy exercises, and standardized patient simulations to support the development of the nurse psychotherapist. METHODS: Using a retrospective qualitati

Are You Qualified, ChatGPT? Examining Clinical Skills and Competencies of ChatGPT in Delivering Systemic Interventions.

Large language model agents such as ChatGPT are increasingly used for relationship advice and mental health support, with many users describing these interactions as therapeutic. This study assessed the clinical and cultural competence of a GPT-based model trained to provide systemic interventions aligned with the AAMFT Code of Ethics and core skills. A volunteer client discussed a relational concern with the model, and the resulting transcript was evaluated by 12 experienced supervisors using standardized measures. Supervisors, unaware of the study's purpose and the therapist being an AI, rat

Temporoparietal Junction Selectively Mediates Social Projection in Mentalizing.

Mentalizing, the cognitive process of inferring others' mental states from limited social information, is often facilitated by social projection, a "self-as-proxy" strategy that engenders self-other mergence (SOM). While SOM overlaps conceptually with the simulation or theory-driven processes, its neural basis remains unresolved. Using fMRI during a dyadic task where participants estimated both their own confidence (metacognition) and a partner's confidence (mentalizing), we found that SOM critically depended on self-confidence encoded in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) during meta
