Gastric cooling and menthol cause an increase in cardiac parasympathetic efferent activity in healthy adult human volunteers.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? How do gastric stretch and gastric cooling stimuli affect cardiac autonomic control? What is the main finding and its importance? Gastric stretch causes an increase in cardiac sympathetic activity. Stretch combined with cold stimulation result in an elimination of the sympathetic response to stretch and an increase in cardiac parasympathetic activity, in turn resulting in a reduction in heart rate. Gastric cold stimulation causes a shift in sympathovagal balance towards parasympathetic dominance. The cold-induced bradycardia has the pot

Enhancement of nose-brain delivery of therapeutic agents for treating neurodegenerative diseases using peppermint oil.

The nose-brain pathway is a potential route for drug delivery as it bypasses the brain barriers. The main objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of peppermint oil in enhancing the bioavailability of intranasally administered neurotrophins like nerve growth factor (NGF). The effect of different concentrations of peppermint oil (PO) on the delivery of NGF across bovine olfactory epithelium was studied in vitro using Franz diffusion cells. Trans-olfactory epithelial electrical resistance (TEER) was measured to assess the permeability status of the bovine olfactory epithelium. The

Characterization and antibacterial application of peppermint essential oil nanoemulsions in broiler.

In order to mitigate the risk of antibiotic resistance in poultry, scientists nowadays consider plant secondary metabolites to be a major organic antibacterial substitute. This study aimed to characterize and investigate the in silico, in vitro, and in vivo antibacterial effects of peppermint essential oil (PEO) in the form of a nanoemulsion (NE), termed PEONE. Menthol as a major compound of PEO has been identified by gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GCMS) analysis as 32.3 %, while lower droplet size, polydispersity Index (PDI), and optimum zeta potential values depicted the stability

A randomized placebo-controlled trial on the effects of Menthacarin, a proprietary peppermint- and caraway-oil-preparation, on symptoms and quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a very common condition affecting more than 10% of the population. While there is no cure, a few drugs have been found to be effective for the relief of symptoms, although most are only effective in a subgroup of patients. We assess and compare the efficacy of a fixed peppermint/caraway-oil-combination (Menthacarin) on symptoms and quality of life (QoL) in patients with FD symptoms consistent with epigastric pain syndrome (EPS) and postprandial distress syndrome (PDS). METHODS: In a prospective, double-blind, multicenter trial, 114 outpatients with chr…

Balancing Nutrient Enrichment and Heavy Metal Stress: Impacts of Wastewater Irrigation on Aromatic Crops.

The increasing demand for irrigation water, together with declining freshwater availability, has intensified interest in wastewater reuse in agriculture. Although wastewater may enhance plant growth because of its nutrient and mineral content, it can also contain salts and heavy metals that may alter plant biochemical quality and raise safety concerns. This study evaluated the morphological, physiological, phytochemical, and antioxidant responses of three aromatic plants-Mentha arvensis, Coriandrum sativum, and Trigonella foenum-graecum-to two irrigation treatments under pot conditions: T0 (di…
