DESIGN: Prospective.
SETTING: Steel-casting plant.
PATIENT(S): Ninety fertile workers exposed to a high temperature compared with 40 fertile workers working under ordinary conditions as control subjects.
INTERVENTION(S): Measurement of scrotal temperature by invagination thermometry, air temperature, relative humidity by aspirated psychrometer, radiant heat by globe thermometer, air velocity by light vane anemometer, and semen analysis.

Oil mists at an automobile factory were measured size-selectively. Furthermore, subjective symptoms were surveyed through the distribution of a questionnaire. The measured levels of respirable-size, 2-10 micrometer oil mists at 3 selected workshops ranged 0.04-0.09 mg/m3 for the lower exposed group (17 men), 0.10-0.18 mg/m3 for the higher exposed group (16 men) to water-insoluble oil, and 0.08-0.29 mg/m3 for the higher exposed group (19 men) to water-soluble oil. Hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen. Previous epidemiologic studies in the 1950s of United States workers from seven facilities producing chromium compounds from chromite ore have reported a markedly increased risk for dying from lung cancer. A new technique for finishing anodized aluminium was introduced during the 1980s--cold impregnation with nickel. Nickel is available on the surface of cold-impregnated aluminium, as shown by the dimethylglyoxime test. Chemical analysis with EDXA showed that nickel was in the form of NiSO4. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of smoking habit and occupational exposure to air pollution on the prevalence of chronic bronchitis and lung function efficiency in foundry workers. MRC survey and spirographic measurements were performed in 917 men aged 18-62 years (mean age 38.6). The proposed article presents results of a hygienic assessment of a converter shop project at a metallurgic plant. Labour conditions in similar metallurgic plants in the country were studied at the preliminary sanitary control stage. 81 per cent of the sanitary authorities' reclamations were met, including dust discharge control measures, out-flowing gases purification, decrease of fluorine compounds discharge measures, etc.

Arsine is one of the most potent haemolytic agents found in industry. Four workers presented with abdominal pain, jaundice and passing tea-coloured urine. Grass hay produced in the Coeur d'Alene River Basin of northern Idaho was fed to a group of 4 ponies. Exposure to molybdenum in dust was measured in a molybdenite roasting plant. This exposure was accompanied by large elevations of serum ceruloplasmin and smaller increases in mean serum uric acid levels in the workers. Absorption of molybdenum from the dust was demonstrated by increases in plasma and urinary molybdenum levels. It remains necessary to demonstrate whether such exposure results in long-term health effects.
