Lifelong constipation in Parkinson's disease and other clinically defined alpha-synucleinopathies: A population-based study in Southeast Minnesota.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies show correlations between constipation and development of Parkinson's disease (PD); however, few studies have explored the association between constipation and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). We sought to explore the lifelong association of constipation and PD, DLB, PDD, and MSA (α-Synucleinopathies), compared to age- and sex-matched controls. METHODS: Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP), we established an incident cohort of clinically defined α-synucleinopathies. A movemen

High prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis B and C in Minnesota Somalis contributes to rising hepatocellular carcinoma incidence.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are known risk factors for liver disease, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). There is substantial global variation in HBV and HCV prevalence resulting in variations in cirrhosis and HCC. We previously reported high prevalence of HBV and HCV infections in Somali immigrants seen at an academic medical center in Minnesota. AIM: To determine the prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis in Somali immigrants in Minnesota through a community-based screening program. METHODS: We conducted a prospective communi…

Statewide Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment for Waterborne Viruses, Bacteria, and Protozoa in Public Water Supply Wells in Minnesota.

Infection risk from waterborne pathogens can be estimated via quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) and forms an important consideration in the management of public groundwater systems. However, few groundwater QMRAs use site-specific hazard identification and exposure assessment, so prevailing risks in these systems remain poorly defined. We estimated the infection risk for 9 waterborne pathogens based on a 2-year pathogen occurrence study in which 964 water samples were collected from 145 public wells throughout Minnesota, USA. Annual risk across all nine pathogens combined was 3.3 ×…

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent-Restructured Form (MMPI-A-RF) characteristics of ADHD in a Korean psychiatric sample.

Global rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have risen. In Korea, ADHD is associated with functional impairments and comorbidity with other psychological disorders. This study examined the correlates of ADHD in a psychiatric sample of Korean adolescents on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent-Restructured Form (MMPI-A-RF). In a clinical sample of 247 adolescents, MMPI-A-RF scores from 46 patients diagnosed with ADHD were compared to the remainder of the clinical sample and to the Korean MMPI-A-RF norms. Results demonstrated significantly different scor…

Mortality after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for severe mucopolysaccharidosis type I: the 30-year University of Minnesota experience.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Mucopolysaccharidosis IH (MPS IH, Hurler syndrome) naturally leads to death within the first decade of life, primarily from cardiac and pulmonary causes. To determine how hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has altered mortality, we analyzed our institution's 30-year experience of patients with MPS IH undergoing HSCT. METHODS: Using chart review and the National Death Index, we determined survival status of 134 patients (males = 69) with MPS IH transplanted between 9/16/1983 and 7/25/2013 on 12/31/2013. Analysis included descriptive statistics, Kaplan-Meier curv

Re-evaluation of the traditional diet-heart hypothesis: analysis of recovered data from Minnesota Coronary Experiment (1968-73).

OBJECTIVE: To examine the traditional diet-heart hypothesis through recovery and analysis of previously unpublished data from the Minnesota Coronary Experiment (MCE) and to put findings in the context of existing diet-heart randomized controlled trials through a systematic review and meta-analysis. DESIGN: The MCE (1968-73) is a double blind randomized controlled trial designed to test whether replacement of saturated fat with vegetable oil rich in linoleic acid reduces coronary heart disease and death by lowering serum cholesterol. Recovered MCE unpublished documents and raw data were analyz…

The influence of traditional food consumption on Cameroonian immigrants' perception of type 2 diabetes in Minnesota: an exploratory qualitative study.

PURPOSE: This study explored how traditional food consumption shapes perceptions of type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk among nondiabetic Cameroonian immigrants residing in Minnesota, USA. The focus was on participants' dietary behaviors, lifestyle adaptations, and experiences with the U. S. healthcare system. Guided by an integrated theoretical framework-including the Health Belief Model (HBM), socioecological theory (SEM), risk/protective factors, and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)-the study aimed to understand perceived influences rather than establish causal effects. METHODS: Thirteen Cameroonian i…

Climate and other environmental factors predict tick abundance and Lyme cases in Minnesota one and two years in advance.

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors, like weather and host abundance influence tick populations which in turn affect tickborne disease in endemic regions. It is important to understand how these factors are associated with tick abundance, and whether they can predict disease. We assessed associations between environmental factors, tick abundance, and human Lyme disease cases in the same year and with one- and two-year lags in Minnesota. In parallel, we compare conventional analytical methods with a novel machine learning approach to evaluate their relative strengths and potential for integration…

Examination of the Reliability and Validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) in a Preoperative Bariatric Surgery Sample.

Presurgical psychological assessment of bariatric surgery candidates aims to identify psychosocial risk factors and provide treatment recommendations to facilitate optimal outcomes. Such assessment typically includes psychometric testing and a clinical interview. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) has been commonly used as a broadband measure to assess a number of psychosocial domains in bariatric clinics. The newest version of the MMPI, the MMPI-3, was recently released. This study sought to (1) establish whether the MMPI-3 is comparable to the MMPI-2-RF in a sample of pat…

Accumulation of Methylmercury in Invertebrates and Masked Shrews (Sorex cinereus) at an Upland Forest-Peatland Interface in Northern Minnesota, USA.

Mercury (Hg) methylation is often elevated at the terrestrial-peatland interface, but methylmercury (MeHg) production at this "hot spot" has not been linked with in situ biotic accumulation. We examined total Hg and MeHg levels in peat, invertebrates and tissues of the insectivore Sorex cinereus (masked shrew), inhabiting a terrestrial-peatland ecotone in northern Minnesota, USA. Mean MeHg concentrations in S. cinereus (71 ng g-1) fell between concentrations measured in spiders (mean 70-140 ng g-1), and ground beetles and millipedes (mean 29-42 ng g-1). Methylmercury concentrations in S. ciner…

The enrichment study of the Minnesota twin family study: increasing the yield of twin families at high risk for externalizing psychopathology.

The Enrichment Study (ES) was designed to extend the Minnesota Twin Family Study (MTFS) by oversampling 11-year-old twins at especially high risk for substance use disorders by virtue of having a childhood disruptive disorder. The sample was ascertained from Minnesota birth records. To identify high-risk twins, we conducted telephone screening interviews for parent-reported symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) as well as indications of academic disengagement. Twins who exceeded a predetermined threshold were invited to participate. To facilitate…

Investigation of an interaction of alcohol intake and family history on breast cancer risk in the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study.

BACKGROUND: One explanation for the variability in results in studies of alcohol consumption and breast cancer could be the presence of effect modifiers, such as genetic susceptibility. The authors examined the interaction of alcohol and family history of breast cancer on breast cancer risk in a population-based family study of 426 multigenerational breast cancer families. The authors evaluated whether alcohol use was a stronger risk factor for breast cancer among sisters, daughters, nieces, and granddaughters of breast cancer probands than among women who married into these families. METHODS
