Pathogenic organisms in chronic suppurative otitis media from 62 patients were identified. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was responsible in 46%, Staphylococcus aureus in 29%. Proteus mirabilis in 13%, Streptococcus pyogenes in 6%, Aspergillus niger in 5% and Mucor sp. in 2%. The most prevalent organism in children was Staphylococcus aureus. The role of fungi in chronic suppurative otitis media is discussed.

Isothermal microcalorimetry is a label-free assay that allows monitoring of enzymatic and metabolic activities. The technique has strengths, but most instruments have a low throughput, which has limited their use for bioassays. Here, an isothermal microcalorimeter, equipped with a vessel holder similar to a 48-well plate, was used. The increased throughput of this microcalorimeter makes it valuable for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Our results show that the sensitivity of the instrument allows the detection of 3 × 10(4) bacteria per vial. Growth of P. mirabilis in Luria Broth med…

OBJECTIVE: To describe the impact of empiric appropriate treatment and the risk factors associated with mortality in patients with bacteremia by E. coli, K. pneumoniae and P. mirabilis producing ESBL.
METHODS: Data were reviewed in an 8-year retrospective study, and 128 bacteremias were found: 80 caused by E. coli (62.5%), 28 by K. pneumoniae (21.9%) and 20 by P. mirabilis (18.6%).
RESULTS: The initial antibiotic treatment, administered within 72 h after the first positive blood culture, was appropriate with carbapenems or other antimicrobial agents with documented in vitro sensitivity in 53…

The prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production by consecutive non-repeated isolates of Enterobacteriaceae was determined over a 6-month period. A total of 8015 strains were isolated from ten Italian laboratories and 509 (6.3%) of these were designated ESBL producers from the results of a double-disk synergy test. Escherichia coli was the most isolated microrganism, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis. Providencia stuartii (28.1%) was the most frequently isolated ESBL producer, followed by K. pneumoniae and Enterobacter aerogenes (20.5%). However, among…

Canine otitis externa is a common and recurrent ear infection in dogs, often caused by bacterial pathogens, and complicated by increasing antimicrobial resistance. The analysis of bacterial isolates from dogs with otitis externa revealed a predominance of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, representing 41% of all cases, followed by Staphylococcus aureus (23%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (19%). Other less frequently isolated organisms included Escherichia coli, Streptococcus canis, and Proteus mirabilis. These results highlight the significant role of S. pseudintermedius in the pathogenesis of ot…

In the relentless battle against multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria, piceatannol emerges as a beacon of hope, showcasing unparalleled antibacterial efficacy and a unique ability to disrupt virulence factors. Our study illuminates the multifaceted prowess of piceatannol against prominent pathogens-Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Notably, piceatannol demonstrated a remarkable ability to inhibit biofilm formation, reduce bacterial mobility, and diminish extracellular enzyme synthesis.Mechanistic insights into piceatannol's ac…

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological investigations have revealed an important association between infection, inflammation and prostate cancer. Certain bacterial species, such as Klebsiella spp, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp, Proteus mirabilis, Chlamydia trachomatis have been linked to prostate cancer. This study aimed to examine the microbiota; specifically bacterial species that have been linked to prostate infections in the urine of individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer.
RESULTS: Sixty-six prostate cancer patients and forty controls provided midstream urine samples. The urine samples were …

We determined MICs of antibacterial agents against 1145 clinical strains of aerobic Gram-negative bacteria (22 species) isolated at 16 Japanese facilities in 2008. MICs were determined using mostly broth microdilution method and antibacterial activity was assessed. Strains producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) accounted for 3.8% of Escherichia coli, 2.6% of Klebsiella pneumoniae, 6.8% of Klebsiella oxytoca, 5.5% of Proteus mirabilis and 1.8% of Proteus vulgaris. ESBL produced strains were 6.8% at K. oxytoca that increased compared with 3.2% and 5.5% at P. mirabilis that decreased …

Salmonella genomic island 1 (SGI1) is a multidrug resistance integrative mobilizable element that harbors a great diversity of antimicrobial resistance gene clusters described in numerous Salmonella enterica serovars and also in Proteus mirabilis. A serious threat to public health was revealed in the recent description in P. mirabilis of a SGI1-derivative multidrug resistance island named PGI1 (Proteus genomic island 1) carrying extended-spectrum-β-lactamase (ESBL) and metallo-β-lactamase resistance genes, blaVEB-6 and blaNDM-1, respectively. Here, we report the first description of Salmonella…

A 25-month-old girl is described who experienced three successive attacks of purulent meningitis due to Proteus mirabilis. Third generation cephalosporins were employed as treatment. Cranial radiography and computed tomography revealed a malformation, in the form of an epidermoid cyst, in a central occipital position; small cerebellar abscesses were also present. The lesion was removed by surgery which led to a complete recovery.

BACKGROUND: Pyoderma is a common dermatological condition in dogs caused by various bacteria that are typically part of the normal microbiota. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Proteus mirabilis are opportunistic pathogens frequently encountered in canines, producing multiple virulence factors with the potential to cause life-threatening infections.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 5-year-old dog presented with skin lesions that generalized to a life-threatening condition. The initial treatment with corticosteroids, anti-parasitic medications, and antibiotics was ineffective. Prote…
