A clinical retrospective study of Caparinia tripilis (Psoroptidae) mite dermatitis in pet African pygmy hedgehogs (Ateletrix albiventris) in southern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Caparinia tripilis is a common ectoparasitic mite affecting African pygmy hedgehogs, and is associated with pruritus and self-trauma. There have been no published surveys on the prevalence of such mites in pet African pygmy hedgehogs in Italy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and clinical signs of C. tripilis infestation in African pygmy hedgehogs. ANIMALS: Clinical records of hedgehogs examined between December 2017 and December 2020 were searched retrospectively. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The prevalence of C. tripilis infestation was evaluated and exposure variables were ass

New Record of Feather Mite, Neopteronyssus bilineatus Mironov, 2003 (Arachnida: Pteronyssidae), from a Grey-Capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Yungipicus canicapillus in Republic of Korea.

This study intended to record a species of feather mite, Neopteronyssus bilineatus Mironov, 2003, (Arachnida: Pteronyssidae), from a grey-capped pygmy woodpecker, Yungipicus canicapillus (Blyth, 1845), in the Republic of Korea. Mite samples were collected from the flight feathers of a woodpecker, preserved directly in 95% ethyl alcohol, and then observed by a light microscope after specimen preparation. Morphology of Neopteronyssus bilineatus is distinguished from other pici group species by opisthosoma part with 2 longitudinal bends, tarsal seta rIII 3 times longer than tarsus III in males, a

Methods for extraction and ex-vivo experimentation with the most complex human commensal, Demodex spp.

Demodex spp. mites are the most complex organisms of the human skin microbiome and were discovered more than 175 years ago, yet only little basic research is published about them. As they can be pathophysiologically relevant ectoparasites associated with rosacea, pityriasis folliculorum, and other inflammatory skin diseases, more research should be encouraged. Being a large microorganism or a tiny animal, there are no established basic methods to handle these mites. Here, we describe techniques enabling the extraction of Demodex mites from human skin, their analysis in different ex-vivo settin

Improved Demodex diagnosis in the clinical setting using a novel in situ technique.

PURPOSE: To compare existing and novel diagnostic techniques for confirming ocular Demodex infestation and to recommend the most reliable method for routine use by eye care practitioners, based on yield and clinical applicability. METHODS: Fifteen participants with a prior Demodex blepharitis diagnosis or featuring typical cylindrical dandruff (CD) collarettes, and seven healthy controls were enrolled. Demodex presence was assessed using five techniques, applied consecutively, on a minimum of two different eyelashes on each eyelid of every participant, for each test, in situ: 1. using fine-po

A model for the treatment of environmentally transmitted sarcoptic mange in bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus).

Some of the most important wildlife diseases involve environmental transmission, with disease control attempted via treatments that induce temporary pathogen resistance among hosts. However, theoretical explanations of such circumstances remain few. A mathematical model is proposed and investigated to analyse the dynamics and treatment of environmentally transmitted sarcoptic mange in a population of bare-nosed wombats. The wombat population is structured into four classes representing stages of infection, in a model that consists of five non-linear differential equations including the unattac

[Human Demodicosis: Emerging Dermatosis Caused by Demodex].

Demodex mites were discovered 175 years ago. However, the pathogenicity of Demodex remains questioned by clinicians due to the high infection yet low incidence of demodicosis and incomplete correlation between mite loads and clinical symptoms. In the recent decades, the pathogenicity of Demodex has attracted public concern as there are continuous case reports of skin lesions caused by mite infection. The pathogenicity of Demodex remains poorly understood. Demodex infection is suspected to be assocaited with rosacea, but its relation with other types of facial lesions such as papule and pustule

Are Demodex mites principal, conspirator, accomplice, witness or bystander in the cause of rosacea?

As the only permanent human ectoparasite, the role of human Demodex mites in health and diseases remains largely unclarified. In view of the ecological interaction between organisms of two different species, a type of commensalism between Demodex mites and humans (the former benefit, the latter unaffected) is most likely, while parasitism occurs temporarily and spatially in the diseased state (the former benefit, the latter harmed). As part of normal skin microbiota, the causal role of Demodex mites in the initiation of rosacea can neither fulfill the classical Henle-Koch's principal nor the a

Dermatoses associated with mites other than Sarcoptes.

Mites are arthropods of the subclass Acari (Acarina). Although Sarcoptes is the mite most commonly recognized as a cause of human skin disease in the United States, numerous other mite-associated dermatoses have been described, and merit familiarity on the part of physicians treating skin disease. This review discusses several non-scabies mites and their associated diseases, including Demodex, chiggers, Cheyletiella, bird mites, grain itch, oak leaf itch, grocer's itch, tropical rat mite, snake mite, and Psoroptes.

Some laelapine mites (Acari: Laelapidae) ectoparasitic on small mammals in the Galapagos Islands, including a new species of Gigantolaelaps from Aegialomys galapagoensis.

A collection of laelapine mites from small mammals in the Galapagos Islands are identified and their host distributions reviewed. Two species of native rodents, Aegialomys galapagoensis and Nesoryzomys narboroughii, were infested only with laelapine species typical of Neotropical oryzomyine rodents; Rattus rattus was infested with Laelaps nuttalli, a host-specific ectoparasite endemic to Old World Rattus. A synopsis of Gigantolaelaps Fonseca is provided and we describe a new laelapine mite, Gigantolaelaps aegialomys n. sp., from the pelage of the rodent A. galapagoensis on Santa Fe Island. The

Canine notoedric mange: a case report.

Notoedric mange is a cutaneous ectoparasitic disease of cats caused by Notoedres cati, a mite belonging to the Sarcoptidae family. The disease occurs in felids, occasionally in other mammals and in humans. The canine form, even if cited by some authors, has never been documented. This report describes for the first time a case of notoedric mange in a dog.

Notoedric mange in the bobcat, Felis rufus, from south Texas.

A fatal case of notoedric mange is described in an adult male bobcat, Felis rufus, from south Texas. This cat was extremely weak and emaciated. Skin lesions consisted of greatly thickened, gray encrustations and alopecia of the muzzle, eyes, crown, ears and parietal scalp extending down the neck to the midscapular region of the shoulders. Histologically, there was partial to complete excoriation of the stratum corneum with erosions into the stratum germinativum to the level of the dermis in some areas. Numerous specimens of Notoedres cati (Hering, 1838) were noted, usually in the stratum corne

The infectivity of surviving Psoroptes ovis (Hering) on cattle treated with ivermectin.

Ivermectin, 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1 (Merck MK-933), injected intramuscularly at the rate of 200 microgram kg-1 body wt., completely eliminated Psoroptes ovis populations from 6 Hereford cattle within 2 weeks after treatment. However, mites surviving 1, 3, and 5 days after treatment were viable and infective when transferred to untreated cattle. Mites surviving 7 days after treatment did not cause scabies or establish a colony of mites when transferred to untreated cattle. These results indicate that cattle treated with ivermectin for control of psoroptic scabies should be isolated from othe

Productivity effects of bovine mange and control with ivermectin.

A randomised block design study was conducted to evaluate the effects of mange on cattle. Twenty-four Simmentaler Fleckvieh bulls were formed into eight replicates of three bulls based on Day -56 body weight (288-414 kg). Within replicates bulls were randomly allocated to groups G1: uninfested control, G2: infested control or G3: infested, treated with 0.2mg ivermectin/kg (1% ivermectin injection; IVOMEC, Merial) on Day 0. The G2 and G3 bulls were infested with Sarcoptes/Chorioptes mites on Days -56 and -49. Feed consumption was recorded daily throughout the study (Days -56 to 56). Body weight

Comparative effects of mites and lice on the reproductive success of rock doves (Columba livia).

We report experimental data comparing the effects of Mesostigmatid mites and Ischnoceran lice on the reproductive performance of a single group of captive rock doves (Columba livia). Several components of host reproductive success were compared for the two groups, including number of eggs laid, hatching success, nestling growth rates, fledging success, post-fledging body mass and survival. Adult body mass and survival were also compared. There was a dramatic difference in the effects of the mites and lice. The former drove host reproductive success to zero, mainly by agitating adults and causi

Pilot field study to assess efficacy of NexGard Combo®, a topical combination of esafoxolaner + eprinomectin + praziquantel, against natural Lynxacarus radovskyi infestation in cats.

This open-label, uncontrolled field study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a topical combination of esafoxolaner, eprinomectin, and praziquantel (at minimum doses of 1.4 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/kg, and 5 mg/kg, respectively) for the treatment of natural infestations with Lynxacarus radovskyi in 16 privately owned cats. Cats were recruited from three veterinary clinics based on inclusion criteria requiring confirmed L. radovskyi infestation and clinically healthy, with the exception of varying degrees of infestation-associated dermatological signs, including pruritus, alopecia, and scaling, were pres
