Evaluating the effectiveness of contact tracing on tuberculosis outcomes in Saskatchewan using individual-based modeling.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially fatal disease spread by an airborne pathogen infecting approximately one third of the globe. For decades, contact tracing (CT) has served a key role in the control of TB and many other notifiable communicable diseases. Unfortunately, CT is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process and is often conducted by a small and overworked nursing staff. To help improve the effectiveness of CT, we introduce a detailed, individual-based model of CT for the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The model captures the detailed operation of TB CT, including loss to follow-u

Changing patterns of telework in spain: the growing gap between preference and practice among teleworkers.

Drawing on nationally representative data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE), this study examines changes in teleworking among teleworkers in Spain between 2021 and 2022; two key years marking the transition from pandemic-driven remote work to the consolidation of hybrid models. Using two waves of nationally representative cross-sectional data from 4,606 teleworkers, results reveal a significant decrease in teleworking frequency, accompanied by a simultaneous improvement in employees' overall evaluations of the experience, indicating growing maturity and acceptance of remo

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Refractory Cardiac Arrest: Current Evidence, Clinical Pathways and Future Directions.

Background: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) has emerged as a promising strategy for refractory cardiac arrest, enabling the restoration of systemic perfusion when conventional resuscitation fails. However, uncertainties remain regarding patient selection, timing and implementation. Methods: A narrative review of experimental data, clinical studies, randomized trials and international recommendations was performed. Particular emphasis was placed on the interplay between physiological mechanisms, real-world organizational models and decision-making processes. Results: ECPR ca

The Association Between Federally Qualified Health Centers' Payer Mix and Clinical Outcomes Pre- and Post-COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) serve as critical safety net providers for over 30 million patients annually, operating with diverse payer mixes that create unique financial and operational challenges. This study examined associations between payer mix patterns and clinical quality outcomes in FQHCs, comparing relationships between 2019 and 2022 to capture COVID-19-related coverage transitions. METHODS: Using Resource Dependence Theory, we conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of Uniform Data System data from 1,190 FQHCs in 2019 and 1,150 FQHCs in 2022, examining

Availability of telehealth-based services at syringe services programs under the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.

INTRODUCTION: The expanded capacity of syringe services programs (SSPs) in the USA to integrate telehealth services was largely related to flexibility of buprenorphine prescription in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. SSPs demonstrated the potential of using telehealth to reach participants with both medical and non-medical services. The present study examines the implementation of medical and non-medical telehealth-based health services in 2020 at SSPs in the USA and organizational characteristics associated with adopting specific telehealth services. METHODS: We administered a cross-sectio

Online popularity as a development factor for cooperatives in the winegrowing sector.

Spain is a global leader in the wine sector in terms of production capacity, which is in stark contrast to its low domestic wine consumption. This situation forces Spanish producers to develop a clear focus on exports. Traditionally, the business model in Spain has been based on low prices, high volumes, and a strong dependence on traditional markets, which places Spain at a clear competitive disadvantage in terms of value. Given these commercial challenges in this sector, where cooperatives play a central role, information and communication technologies, particularly websites, offer a source

Organizational and client determinants of cost in outpatient substance abuse treatment.

BACKGROUND: Understanding variation in the cost of outpatient substance abuse treatment is important for improving the delivery and financing of care. Studies that examine how the cost of treatment relates to treatment program and client characteristics can provide important data about variables that affect unit costs of treatment. Such analyses can inform those who are responsible for setting appropriate reimbursement rates and can give important cost data to program directors responsible for delivering cost-effective treatment. AIMS OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study is to describe the res

A collaborative, systems-level approach to eliminating healthcare-associated MRSA, central-line-associated bloodstream infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and respiratory virus infections.

To achieve sustainable reductions in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) deployed a collaborative, systems-level initiative. With the sponsorship of senior leadership, multidisciplinary teams were established to address healthcare-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and respiratory virus infections. The goal of the initiative was to eliminate these four HAIs among medical center inpatients by 2012. In the first 24 mon

Implementing the cities readiness initiative: lessons learned from Boston.

The federally funded Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) requires seamless federal, state, and local public health coordination to provide antibiotics to an entire city population within 48 hours of an aerosolized release of anthrax. We document practical lessons learned from the development and implementation of the Boston CRI plan. Key themes center on heightened emphasis on security, a new mass protection model of dispensing, neighborhood-centric clinic site selection, online training of Medical Reserve Corps volunteers, and the testing of operations through drills and exercises. Instances of Moral Distress in Medical Education: Recognition and Approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding and clarifying key concepts such as "knowledge sharing" is essential for advancing interprofessional collaboration and education in healthcare. This study aimed to analyze the concept of knowledge sharing in multidisciplinary surgical teams. METHODS: This is a qualitative study performed using Schwartz-Barcott and Kim's (2000) hybrid model of concept analysis, implemented in three stages: 1) theoretical, 2) fieldwork, and 3) final analysis. In the theoretical phase, a comprehensive literature review was analyzed through inductive content analysis. Along the fieldwo

Human-centered digital ecosystem: safeguarding healthcare workers' sleep, ergonomics, and occupational health.

Using Healthcare-Associated Infection (HCAI) surveillance as a representative model for high-burden administrative tasks, this Perspective argues that healthcare worker fatigue, sleep disruption, and poorly integrated digital systems threaten both occupational health and health-system resilience. Crucially, these problems should be addressed as failures of work-system design rather than deficits in individual resilience. We propose a Human-Centered Digital Ecosystem that places adequate staffing, circadian-aligned scheduling, protected recovery, and supportive organizational conditions before

Latent class patterns of work-life balance changes among Korean SME workers during COVID-19 based on organizational support and psychosocial health.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted work-life balance (WLB), particularly among workers in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study aimed to classify patterns of WLB changes and identify associated factors using the Job Demands-Resources model as a theoretical framework. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 503 SME employees in South Korea between July and September 2020. Latent class analysis identified WLB change patterns, and multinomial logistic regression compared factors across classes. Three latent classes were identified: stable (Class 1, 81.0%), worsened (Class 2, 11.

Neuropsychological performance and predictors of pharmacological treatment response in obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of executive dysfunctions. As organizational strategies may play an important role as a possible endophenotype of the disorder, we decided to investigate non-verbal memory and organizational abilities in OCD. We also investigated how organization and non-verbal memory differ between responder and non-responder patients to pharmacological treatment, to test whether cognitive functions can predict the response to pharmacological treatment. METHODS: In Study 1, executive and clinical functioning measures were applie

Collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance: meta-analyses of their relationships, and test of a mediation model.

The authors examined relationships among collective efficacy, group potency, and group performance. Meta-analytic results (based on 6,128 groups, 31,019 individuals, 118 correlations adjusted for dependence, and 96 studies) reveal that collective efficacy was significantly related to group performance (.35). In the proposed nested 2-level model, collective efficacy assessment (aggregation and group discussion) was tested as the 1st-level moderator. It showed significantly different average correlations with group performance (.32 vs. .45), but the group discussion assessment was homogeneous, w

Community blood supply model: development of a new model to assess the safety, sufficiency, and cost of the blood supply.

BACKGROUND: Through a combination of predonation donor screening and donated unit testing, the blood supply is safer than ever. However, as a result of increasingly stringent screening measures, one of the greatest threats may be an insufficient supply. The balance between safety and adequacy of the blood supply has not received enough attention. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The authors developed a model to allow for empirical investigation of the determinants of a safe and sufficient supply. The model is a cohort simulation of allogeneic whole-blood donation, with the population of presenting d

A telehomecare model for optimizing rehabilitation outcomes.

For telehealth to become an accepted component of rehabilitation, a scientific base verifying that telehealth improves outcomes must be developed. A conceptual framework based on theory and empirical findings is necessary for this area of inquiry to flourish. Most academic curricula possess such an educational pillar, which serves to help prepare professionals to practice in the new arena, and scholars to perform quality research. Currently, the authors are involved in developing areas of the biomedical engineering and nursing curricula at Marquette University to address key areas of telerehab
