The incidence of respiratory acid-base abnormalities in the critical care unit (CCU) is unknown, although respiratory alkalosis is suspected to be common in this population. Abnormal carbon dioxide levels can have many physiologic effects and in specific patient populations, changes in Pco2 has been associated with outcome. Monitoring Pco2 in CCU patients is an important aspect of critical patient assessment and identification of respiratory acid-base abnormalities can be valualbe as a diagnostic tool. Treatment of respiratory alkalosis is largely focused on resolution of the primary disease.

Increased understanding of molecular pathophysiology has led to the detection of clinically applicable biomarkers across medicine, which allow for minimally invasive detection, management, and monitoring of disease processes. Although biomarkers have traditionally played a more significant role in malignancy, these goals also pertain to benign disease. Herein, the authors review ongoing research into biomarker investigation and application in urethral stricture disease, benign prostatic hyperplasia, bladder outlet obstruction, and overactive bladder. No biomarkers for these entities are curren

Gitelman syndrome (GS) is a tubulopathy characterized by hypokaliemia, hypomagnesiemia, metabolic alkalosis and hypocalciuria. We report a case of a 33-year-old pregnant woman with Gitelman Syndrome. Oral potassium chloride and magnesium citrate were prescribed and the course of the pregnancy was uneventful with vaginal delivery at term. The impact of GS on the physiologic adaptations to pregnancy is not well-known, with few reports to date. Monitoring of serum potassium and magnesium levels with supplementation, amniotic fluid and fetal growth is required to prevent obstetrical and fetal comp

Children involved in sports should be encouraged to participate in a variety of different activities and develop a wide range of skills. Young athletes who specialize in just one sport may be denied the benefits of varied activity while facing additional physical, physiologic, and psychologic demands from intense training and competition. This statement reviews the potential risks of high-intensity training and sports specialization in young athletes. Pediatricians who recognize these risks can have a key role in monitoring the health of these young athletes and helping reduce risks associated

The mortality rate of severe respiratory failure in most centers remains 60% to 90% with conventional pulmonary support techniques. Recent advances in the physiologic management of patients with acute respiratory failure include optimizing systemic oxygen delivery as reflected by continuous mixed-venous saturation monitoring, avoidance of the damaging effects of high inflation pressures and volumes during mechanical ventilation, and the increasing application of extracorporeal life support techniques for refractory respiratory failure. The future promises the routine clinical application of no

Traditionally, shock has been recognized or diagnosed by subjective signs and symptoms, particularly in septic shock, where transition from localized to systemic infection and then to septic shock may be gradual and subtle. Management has been directed toward normalizing these subjective symptoms as well as BP, heart rate, urine output, hematocrit, central venous pressure, and blood gases. The major problem is that restoration to normal values of these secondary aspects of shock do not correct the underlying tissue perfusion defect. The aim of this review is to describe a physiologic mechanist

Wearable sensors are essential tools for the continuous, real-time monitoring of human and plant health. They interact directly with skin and living plant organs to track physical, electrical, and chemical signals that are often difficult to measure with off-body or off-plant sensors. Sensors that are optically transparent minimize interference with the host. Achieving transparency is challenging because devices must minimize light absorption, haze, and color tint while maintaining good conductivity, mechanical flexibility, strong adhesion, and breathability. This Review focuses on transparent

Continuous, objective records of spinal motion during ordinary life have not been available; assessment relies on intermittent questionnaires and brief supervised motion capture. A dual inertial-sensor garment applies the Zero-Cycle method, which organises the differential thorax-pelvis motion into movement cycles and emits one fixed-dimensional feature vector per cycle, using recurrent movement configurations as body-intrinsic anchors. In the implementation used for this study, the differential orientation is projected onto a horizontal plane at a nominal 50 cm scale, centred on a data-derive

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Falls are a leading cause of morbidity, functional decline, and premature care entry among older adults. Assistive living technologies (ALTs) are increasingly used for fall prevention, detection, and risk monitoring, but their value depends on how older adults, caregivers, and care staff experience them in practice.
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to synthesize user-reported experiences of ALTs used for fall prevention, detection, or monitoring across private homes, retirement villages (RVs), and residential aged care homes (RACHs), examining perceiv

BACKGROUND: Failure to recognize clinical deterioration in hospitalized patients has prompted the development of rule-based electronic surveillance (RB-ES), predictive model-based electronic surveillance (PM-ES), and continuous physiologic monitoring (CPM). However, their comparative effects on patient-centered outcomes remain uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the clinical effects of emergent intensive RB-ES, PM-ES, CPM, and local standard care in nonintensive care unit hospital settings.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase via online, the Cochrane Central Register of

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The optimal monitoring strategy for atrial fibrillation (AF) detection after transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) is uncertain, as existing evidence is largely derived from ischemic stroke or mixed stroke-TIA populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the rate of newly diagnosed AF in TIA patients using different electrocardiographic monitoring modalities and durations.
METHODS: A literature search from 1966 through 31 May 2025 was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: ICU procedures are increasingly complex, often requiring deeper sedation or general anesthesia, and are increasingly performed at the bedside to avoid transport risk. This trend has expanded the role of anesthesiologists in ICU nonoperating room anesthesia (NORA). This review summarizes practical anesthetic considerations for these procedures, focusing on optimization, monitoring, and systems issues.
RECENT FINDINGS: ICU patients frequently have shock, hypoxemia, right ventricular failure, metabolic acidosis, organ dysfunction, and neurologic injury that change anesthetic p

BACKGROUND: Vital signs monitoring is key to identifying deteriorating hospital patients. However, adherence to monitoring protocols is limited, with observations frequently missed or delayed. Previous studies of interruptions and delays to vital signs observations have been descriptive, with none attempting to conceptualise the types of tasks that are prioritised over vital signs observations.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore how nursing teams perform vital sign observations on acute hospital wards and conceptualises which types of work delay or interrupt them.
DESIGN: Non-participant

Diabetic foot ulcers represent a serious complication of diabetes mellitus, often associated with amputations and hospitalizations. Monitoring foot temperature allows early detection of the risk of developing DFUs. This study compares foot temperature monitoring methods in patients with diabetes mellitus and assesses their applicability in the early detection of foot temperature differences. A systematic literature review was conducted following Cochrane methodology. An electronic search was carried out across multiple scientific databases. The risk of bias was assessed using the Rob2 tool, an

It is estimated that the number of patients with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) in Greece exceeds 120,000, and this population is expected to further rise by 5% annually. The importance of adequate monitoring and follow-up management of these devices is well-recognized. However, the increasing complexity and growing number of CIEDs makes their management a demanding medical service. Traditionally, interrogation and programming of CIEDS is performed using a portable programmer by qualified personnel, requiring patient physical presence. During the last decade, remote monitoring

Continuous patient monitoring using automated algorithms has the potential to reduce risks associated with seizures by accelerating interventions. Video monitoring offers a practical alternative; however, seizure detection algorithms could learn to associate incidental events with seizure activity, introducing biases during both the training and the testing phases. By incorporating patient tracking into seizure detection algorithms, patients can be isolated within video frames, reducing biases and improving specificity. As no existing object detection models are pre-trained to identify patient

Coastal ecosystems such as seagrass meadows endure challenges imposed by marine heatwaves (MHWs) and eutrophication. Although the isolated impacts of these stressors are well documented, their combined effects are yet to be better understood. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a mesocosm experiment evaluating the combined effects of stress caused by a MHW and exposure to effluent from a ruptured sewage pond -used as a proxy for eutrophication- on the seagrass Halodule wrightii and its associated infauna. Our results showed that H. wrightii and its infauna tolerated the conditions of the
