Cyclic motion of the soft palate in feeding.

The soft palate moves rhythmically during feeding, but the timing and frequency of this motion are not known. We tested the hypothesis that cyclic soft palate motion is temporally linked to cyclic jaw movement. Nine healthy, asymptomatic human subjects with normal dentition ate solid food coated with barium. Videofluorographic recordings showed that rhythmic motions of the soft palate during mastication were linked temporally to jaw motion. Soft palate motion occurred in every recording but not in every jaw cycle. The soft palate moved upward as the jaw opened, but the nasopharynx was not seal…

Are there surgical implications to aortic root motion?

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: By increasing the longitudinal stress in the ascending aorta, downward movement of the aortic root might promote the proximal transverse tears seen in aortic dissections. The study aim was to evaluate the influence of five common cardiac conditions on the magnitude of aortic root displacement in cardiac patients. METHODS: Aortic root contrast injections were analyzed in 90 patients (mean age 68 years) to measure downward motion of the root perpendicular to the plane of the sinotubular junction (STJ). RESULTS: Displacement of the aortic root ranged from 0 to 1…

Processing of global form and motion in migraineurs.

Previous studies have identified anomalies of cortical visual processing in migraineurs that appear to extend beyond V1. Migraineurs respond differently than controls to transcranial magnetic stimulation of V5, and can demonstrate impairments of global motion processing. This study was designed to assess the integrity of intermediate stages of both motion and form processing in people with migraine. We measured the ability to integrate local orientation information into a global form percept, and to integrate local motion information into a global motion percept. Control subjects performed sig…

Motion measurements in the jumping of a mountain bike.

Mountain biking is generally a much more extreme sport than road cycling. It exhibits large motions and loadings, and involves complicated interactions between the rider and the bike. A dynamic model of a mountain bike and rider is being developed that requires validation by comparing predicted and actual dynamic performance. This paper reports the first step by acquiring experimental data of a moderately extreme maneuver; a mid speed jump and landing and was undertaken as part of a senior level instrumentation class. Both biomechanics and mechanical engineering studies can benefit from this d…

The effect of ankle injury on subtalar motion.

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the medial and lateral ankle ligaments have been implicated in subtalar joint instability. Lateral injury increased subtalar joint varus and anterior translation, while deltoid injury increased external rotation and valgus in studies using static, non-physiologic testing. METHODS: The current study employed a physiologically accurate ankle model using phasic force-couples attached to the muscle-tendon units to reproduce ankle motion. Six-degree-of-freedom kinematics of the tibia, talus, and calcaneus were measured using a VICON motion analysis system under the followin…

[Range of motion of the scoliotic spine in adults].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the movement of the trunk in adults with untreated adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and to evaluate their relationship with the age of the patients, the location and angle of the curve, and the number of involved intervertebral segments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred adult subjects with untreated AIS, without associated signs, were analyzed with rachimetry. The flexion, extension, bending, and rotation of the trunk were determined for each patient. The results were compared with a different sample: healthy subjects without spinal disease/other groups with more

Segregation of object and background motion in the retina.

An important task in vision is to detect objects moving within a stationary scene. During normal viewing this is complicated by the presence of eye movements that continually scan the image across the retina, even during fixation. To detect moving objects, the brain must distinguish local motion within the scene from the global retinal image drift due to fixational eye movements. We have found that this process begins in the retina: a subset of retinal ganglion cells responds to motion in the receptive field centre, but only if the wider surround moves with a different trajectory. This selecti…

Self-motion and the perception of stationary objects.

One of the ways that we perceive shape is through seeing motion. Visual motion may be actively generated (for example, in locomotion), or passively observed. In the study of the perception of three-dimensional structure from motion, the non-moving, passive observer in an environment of moving rigid objects has been used as a substitute for an active observer moving in an environment of stationary objects; this 'rigidity hypothesis' has played a central role in computational and experimental studies of structure from motion. Here we show that this is not an adequate substitution because active …

[Mechanism of development of space motion sickness].

Astronauts and scientists are scheduled to stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for three-month periods, and various problems r … of bones. In addition, serious problems arise during the time in space due to the symptoms of space motion sickness, caused by neuro-otological changes. Space motion sickness is experienced by nearly 70% of the first-time astronauts, in the form of such symptoms as nausea, and vomiting. It is said that space motion sickness develops at the time of adapta …

Emesis and space motion sickness in amphibians.

Amphibians possess the ability to vomit in response to a variety of stimuli that provoke emesis in mammals. Pharmacological studies have establish that the ejection of gastric contents and the basic mechanism for vomiting have been phylogenetically conserved among these tetrapods. As part of on-going comparative studies on emesis in vertebrates, we previously documented that some postmetamorphic anurans and salamander larvae experience motion-induced emesis when exposed to the provocative stimulus of parabolic aircraft flight. However, more recent experiments suggest that there are strict cond…

Motion-responsive regions of the human brain.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to map motion responsive regions of the human brain by contrasting passive viewing of moving and stationary randomly textured patterns. Regions were retained as motion responsive if they reached significance either in the group analysis or in the majority of hemispheres in single-subject analysis. They include well-known regions, such as V1, hMT/V5+, and hV3A, but also several occipito-temporal, occipito-parietal, parietal, and frontal regions. The time course of the activation was similar in most of these regions. Motion responses were nearly ide…

Visual interactions in the path of apparent motion.

When two stationary visual objects appear in alternating sequence, they evoke the perception of a single object moving back and forth between them. This is known as stroboscopic or apparent motion and forms the basis of perceived continuity in, for example, motion pictures. When the spatiotemporal separation between the inducing objects is optimal, the subjective appearance of apparent motion is nearly indistinguishable from that of real motion. Here we report that the detection and identification of a simple visual form in the path of apparent motion is impaired by the illusory perception of …

Prevalence and correlates of susceptibility to motion sickness.

Data on susceptibility to motion sickness were collected on a sample of 535 individuals divided into eight groups. The prevalence of motion sickness among Tibetans and Northeast Indians (28%) was slightly higher than Northwest Indians (26%). Generally speaking, females (27.3%) were more susceptible than males (16.8%). Among different groups, the highest incidence of susceptibility to motion sickness (SMS) was recorded in schizophrenic patients (30%), while the lowest in rowers (zero percent). Ears and eyes are the most potent receptors of provocative motion that causes sickness. Individuals wi…

Motion and shape perception in cerebral akinetopsia.

Motion cues serve many purposes in primate vision. Consequently, akinetopsia, a defect of movement perception due to cerebral lesions, would be expected to comprise a range of motion-related defects. To address this issue we explored further the perceptual profiles in akinetopsic subject L.M. who has motion perception deficits due to extensive bilateral lesions of the dorsolateral visual association cortex that spare primary visual cortex, area V1. We used several different experimental procedures. Using random-dot motion stimuli, we showed that L.M. can still perceive global coherent motion a…

A predictive test for space motion sickness.

Eye torsion was examined in 13 astronaut subjects, tested during repeated episodes of 0 G and 1.8 G in parabolic flight aboard NASA's KC-135. Four findings are included. 1) A strong relationship between previous history of SMS and ocular torsional disconjugacy in novel gravitational states. 2) Responses were unchanged in 4 subjects retested a year later. 3) Ocular torsional disconjugacy scores increased as exposure to 0 and 1.8 G increased. This was particularly evident in subjects who had had SMS. 4) Torsional studies during 10 to 20 parabolas are required to accurately predict SMS. The hypot

Research strategies for motion and space sickness.

Research is urged for several motion sickness topics now receiving relatively little attention. The role of the area postrema, if any, is not completely resolved. The hypothesis that the cerebral spinal fluid might be a necessary neurochemical conduit should be confirmed or put to rest. It is surprising that the cerebellum, implicated more than 40 years ago, has not been reevaluated for its role in motion sickness in view of the explosion of new data on this structure. The sensory rearrangement theory, known by several names, needs direct experimental verification. One such experiment should d…
