Precursors of post-bout motion sickness in adolescent female boxers.

Athletic head trauma (both concussive and sub-concussive) is common among adolescents. Head trauma often is followed by motion sickness-like symptoms, by changes in cognitive performance, and by changes in standing body sway. We evaluated adolescent female boxers who did and did not report motion sickness after a bout (i.e., a boxing match), together with a control group of non-boxers. We asked whether pre-bout body sway would differ between boxers who experienced post-bout motion sickness and those who did not. In addition, we asked whether pre-bout cognitive performance would differ between …

Cognitive and postural precursors of motion sickness in adolescent boxers.

Athletic head trauma (both concussive and sub-concussive) is common among adolescents. Concussion typically is followed by motion sickness-like symptoms, by changes in cognitive performance, and by changes in standing body sway. We asked whether pre-bout body sway would differ between adolescent boxers who experienced post-bout motion sickness and those who did not. In addition, we asked whether pre-bout cognitive performance would differ as a function of adolescent boxers' post-bout motion sickness. Nine of nineteen adolescent boxers reported motion sickness after a bout. Pre-bout measures of…

Does 3D produce more symptoms of visually induced motion sickness?

3D stereoscopy technology with high quality images and depth perception provides entertainment to its viewers. However, the technology is not mature yet and sometimes may have adverse effects on viewers. Some viewers have reported discomfort in watching videos with 3D technology. In this research we performed an experiment showing a movie in 2D and 3D environments to participants. Subjective and objective data are recorded and compared in both conditions. Results from subjective reporting shows that Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) is significantly higher in 3D condition. For objective …

Prolonged reduction of motion sickness sensitivity by visual-vestibular interaction.

The angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) were elicited simultaneously at low frequencies to study effects of habituation of the velocity storage time constant in the vestibular system on motion sickness. Twenty-nine subjects, eleven of whom were susceptible to motion sickness from common transportation, were habituated by sinusoidal rotation at 0.017 Hz at peak velocities from 5 to 20°/s, while they watched a full-field OKN stimulus. The OKN stripes rotated in the same direction and at the same frequency as the subjects, but at a higher velocity. This produced…

Heart rate variability and motion sickness during forklift simulator driving.

The goal of the study was to determine the effect of a 1-h hour long forklift truck virtual simulator driving on the mechanism of autonomic heart rate (HR) regulation in operators. The participants were divided into 2 subgroups: subjects with no definite inclination to motion sickness (group A) and subjects with a definite inclination to motion sickness (group B). Holter monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG) signal was carried out in all subjects during the virtual simulator driving. For 12 consecutive epochs of ECG signal, HR variability analysis was conducted in time and frequency domains. I…

Various anti-motion sickness drugs and core body temperature changes.

INTRODUCTION: Blood flow changes and inactivity associated with motion sickness appear to exacerbate the rate of core temperature decrease during subsequent body cooling. We investigated the effects of various classes of anti-motion sickness drugs on core temperature changes. METHODS: There were 12 healthy male and female subjects (20-35 yr old) who were given selected classes of anti-motion sickness drugs prior to vestibular Coriolis cross coupling induced by graded yaw rotation and periodic pitch-forward head movements in the sagittal plane. All subjects were then immersed in water at 18 de…

The efficacy of low-dose intranasal scopolamine for motion sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Scopolamine is an effective motion sickness prophylactic, but oral and transdermal formulations are slowly absorbed. To enhance absorption and potentially efficacy, an intranasal formulation of scopolamine (INSCOP) was tested. METHOD: There were 16 motion sickness susceptible subjects with an average age of 23.5 +/- 3.0 yr and an average score of 11.3 +/- 4.7 on the Modified Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire-Short Form who volunteered to participate in the study. Each subject was given 0.4 mg of INSCOP and a placebo in a randomized, double-blind crossover design and, …

Motion sickness in pilot trainees: management to keep them flying.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness is a recurrent problem in pilot schools. Many techniques to overcome motion sickness are used worldwide, mostly including sedative medication and psychotherapy. Motion sickness does not correlate with future pilot skills: it should not be a criterion for selection of candidates. The problem must be controlled from the onset in an objective way. In the Swiss Air Force selection program, time compression does not allow any delay between the selection flights, nor can drugs be used. METHODS: We created an after-flight motion sickness checklist. We present a descript…

Postural instability and motion sickness in a virtual moving room.

OBJECTIVE: We examined motion sickness in an oscillating virtual environment presented via a video projector system. BACKGROUND: Visible oscillation of the physical environment is known to induce both postural instability and motion sickness, but it cannot be assumed that the same phenomena will occur in a virtual simulation of such motion. METHOD: Standing participants (3 men and 9 women, 20-22 years of age) were exposed to oscillation of a virtual room. The stimulus was a computer-generated simulation of a laboratory device that is known to induce postural instability and motion sickness. …

Rotation velocity change and motion sickness in an optokinetic drum.

BACKGROUND: Stationary subjects who view the interior of an optokinetic drum often experience motion sickness (MS) symptoms, perhaps because visual and vestibular sensory inputs are in conflict. It was predicted that intermittently changing drum rotation velocity would cause an increase in sensory conflict, and subsequently lead to more MS. Visual input indicating frequent changes in self-motion would not be consistent with vestibular input indicating no self-motion. When drum rotation is steady, visual and vestibular inputs are more likely to agree given that the vestibular organs only respon…

Pavlovian conditioning of taste aversion using a motion sickness paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Pavlovian conditioning of taste aversion has rarely been investigated in healthy humans using motion sickness as the unconditioned stimulus (US). METHODS: Ninety subjects were pretested for susceptibility to illusory motion (vection) in a rotating drum. Thirty-two subjects susceptible to pseudomotion were assigned randomly to two groups and received either water 1 hour before rotation and a novel taste (elderberry juice, conditioned stimulus, [CS]) immediately before rotation in a rotating chair (conditioning group), or the sequence of water and juice was reversed (control group). …

Evaluating sensory conflict and postural instability. Theories of motion sickness.

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the sensory conflict and the postural instability theories of motion sickness. The central hypothesis of sensory conflict theory is that motion sickness is caused by conflict between the current pattern of sensory inputs about self-movement and the pattern that is expected on the basis of previous experience. A subsidiary hypothesis is that the degree of motion sickness is proportional to the magnitude of sensory conflict. The central hypothesis of postural instability theory is that motion sickness is caused by loss of postural control. A subsidiar…

Effect of hypoxia on motion sickness induced by optokinetic stimulation.

The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of hypoxia on motion sickness (MS) induced by optokinetic stimulation and to observe its character and principle. Twenty healthy male subjects aged 18-25 years received optokinetic stimulus (OS) and hypoxic-optokinetic stimulus (HOS) according to the "Latin Square" arrangement and "Self-control" methods. Motion sickness symptoms (MSS) and optokinetic horizontal nystagmus (OKHN) were recorded and analysed. The results indicated: (1) MS average score for HOS was higher than that for OS (P<0.001); (2) Slow phase velocity(SPV) of OKHN in HOS w…

Alterations in R-R variability associated with experimental motion sickness.

Motion sickness is a complex integration of responses from multiple physiological systems. Whether the changes that occur during the time course of motion sickness are mediated by the sympathetic or parasympathetic systems is still controversial. The present study evaluates alterations in R-R variability during experimental motion sickness in motion sick and non-motion sick subjects. Ten motion sick subjects and 7 non-motion sick subjects participated in the study. Power spectrum analysis of R-R variation was conducted for all subjects 10 min before a brief vestibular disorientation test (BVDT…

Reliability of psychophysiological responses across multiple motion sickness stimulation tests.

Although there is general agreement that a high degree of variability exists between subjects in their autonomic nervous system responses to motion sickness stimulation, very little evidence exists that examines the reproducibility of autonomic responses within subjects during motion sickness stimulation. Our objectives were to examine the reliability of autonomic responses and symptom levels across five testing occasions using the (1) final minute of testing, (2) change in autonomic response and the change in symptom level, and (3) strength of the relationship between the change in symptom le…

Motion sickness incidence during a round-the-world yacht race.

Motion sickness experiences were obtained from participants in a 9 month, round the world yacht race. Race participants completed questionnaires on their motion sickness experience 1 week prior to the start of the race, during the race, and following the race. Yacht headings, sea states, and wind directions were recorded throughout the race. Illness and the occurrence of vomiting were related to the duration at sea and yacht encounter directions relative to the prevailing wind. Individual crewmember characteristics, the use of anti-motion sickness drugs, activity while at sea, and after-effect…

Effects of scopolamine on autonomic profiles underlying motion sickness susceptibility.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of scopolamine on the physiological patterns occurring prior to and during motion sickness stimulation. In addition, the use of physiological profiles in the prediction of motion sickness was evaluated. Sixty subjects ingested either 0.6 mg scopolamine, 2.5 mg methscopolamine, or a placebo. Heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (an index of vagal tone), and electrogastrograms were measured prior to and during the exposure to a rotating optokinetic drum. Compared to the other groups, the scopolamine group reported fewer motion sicknes…
