Atresia of the oesophagus occurs near to the site of convergence of the foregut with structures of branchial arch origin. This is a confluence of a striated muscle tube with a somatic nerve supply and a smooth muscle tube with an autonomic nerve supply. The implications, with regard to function, of denervating the oesophagus during operation are influenced by this anatomy. During dissection of a cadaver with oesophageal atresia and distal fistula, the sites of potential nerve injury were displayed. Damage to these nerves occurs during routine primary repair and may contribute to oesophageal mo

Striated preferentially expressed gene (SPEG), a member of the myosin light chain kinase family, is localized at the level of triad surrounding myofibrils in skeletal muscles. In humans, SPEG mutations are associated with centronuclear myopathy and cardiomyopathy. Using a striated muscle-specific Speg-knockout (KO) mouse model, we have previously shown that SPEG is critical for triad maintenance and calcium handling. Here, we further examined the molecular function of SPEG and characterized the effects of SPEG deficiency on triad and focal adhesion proteins. We used yeast two-hybrid assay, and

Over activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is known to be cardiotoxic but the potential injurious effects on the skeletal musculature have not been investigated. Male Wistar rats were given subcutaneous injections of aldosterone (1 microg-10 mg kg-1) and killed 7 h later, or continuous infusion (1 mg kg-1 d-1) and killed 48 h later. The role of the mineralocorticoid receptor in mediating aldosterone-induced apoptosis in vivo was investigated using spironolactone (200 mg kg-1). The number of apoptotic (caspase 3 positive) myocytes was counted on cryosections of the heart, soleu

We present the case of a 72-year-old immunocompetent patient from Chocó, Colombia, with a 12-day course of fever, headache, progressive neurological deterioration, and rapid evolution to multiorgan failure and death. In the histopathological study of tissues obtained at necropsy, tissue cysts morphologically suggestive of being bradyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii were identified and confirmed by immunohistochemistry in heart, brain, and striated muscle.

We describe a neonate born with complex arrhythmias that included concurrent atrial and ventricular tachycardias. Genetic testing demonstrated a mutation in the TTN gene, which codes for titin, a large protein found in striated muscle sarcomeres. The complex arrhythmias were successfully treated with amiodarone and flecainide. The patient remains asymptomatic with normal biventricular function. We speculate that the complex arrhythmias and TTN gene mutation may be related.

The amniotic band syndrome (ABS) refers to the infrequent occurrence of congenital deformities presumably due to fetal entanglement in strands of ruptured amniotic sac. The most commonly associated anomalies include amputations, constriction bands, syndactyly, craniofacial defects, club feet, and cleft lip. We present a typical case and short literature review of ABS. The infant reported also had a connective tissue nevus and a cutaneous striated muscle hamartoma.

An unusual vesculobullous disease and myasthenia gravis occurred concurrently with a malignant thymoma in a Japanese male. The bullous dermatosis had combined clinical and histological features of both dermatitis herpetiformis and pemphigus. Serum showed striated muscle antibodies and intercellular epithelial autoantibodies; the latter had been demonstrated even prior to the development of the skin lesions. Thus, immunologically, this dermatosis was confirmed to be a variety of pemphigus.

57 female rats were divided into four groups according to age and gestation. Trichinella spiralis infection was induced by feeding the rats with rat muscle containing about 10000 larvae per gram. The mating and sacrificing of females were done differently for each group. New-born rats were examined by direct trichinoscopy and by peptic digestion of muscle. We found that larvae of T. spiralis which entered the uterus of the pregnant females can pass to the foetus. It was impossible to specify the time when larvae crossed the placenta, but this crossing is made only by those larvae which did not

A single subcutaneous (s.c.) infection with 1×10(7) c.f.u. GAS472, a group A streptococcus (GAS) serotype M1 strain isolated from the blood of a patient suffering from streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, led to severe damage of striated muscle layers in the feet of mast cell (MC)-deficient WBB6F(1)-Kit(W)/Kit(W-v) (W/W(v)) mice 72 h after infection. In contrast, no damage was recognized in striated muscle layers in the feet of the control WBB6F(1)-Kit(+/+) (+/+) mice 72 h after infection. In addition, adoptively transferred MCs reduced progressive tissue necrosis of the feet of W

To date, little is known about precise time-dependent distribution and histological localization of tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (mTHPC) in human healthy tissues and squamous cell malignancies in the upper aero-digestive tract. A fluorescence microscopy study was performed on 50 healthy tissue biopsies and on 13 tumors (graded from Tis to T1 SCC) from 30 patients. Tissue samples were taken between 4 h and 11 days following injection of 0.15 mg/kg mTHPC. A fairly comparable distribution pattern in various tissues was observed over time in different patients. Vascular localization of mTHPC fluo

Antiheart immune reactions have been reported in patients with Chagas' disease, and we have postulated that the observed cardiac lesions are mediated by autoimmune antiheart reactions elicited by the etiologic agent Trypanosoma cruzi. In this report, BALB/c mice infected with a low inoculum of T. cruzi developed splenic lymphocyte cytotoxicity against normal syngeneic neonatal cardiac myofibers in vitro 150 days after infection, whereas splenic lymphocytes obtained from mice at 15, 45, 90, or 120 days after infection or from matched controls did not. No antiheart antibody or antibody-directed

BACKGROUND: Hemiplegia, or hemiparesis, severe impairment of purposeful activation of striated musculature, is the most conspicuous and often most disabling symptom of acute cerebrovascular lesions. Spontaneous improvement of voluntary strength may extend over many months.
OBJECTIVE: In this archetypical upper motor neuron syndrome we wish to ascertain the degree of functional impairment due to direct contractile impairment of the affected striated musculature.
DESIGN: Maximal tetanic muscle contraction was elicited by electrical stimulation applied directly to the tibialis anterior of the p

The human ciliary muscle of the eye of a 48-year-old male enucleated at surgery for an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland was studied regarding the morphological characteristics of the anterior apical part of the muscle, including the three-dimensional microstructure. In the anterior serial transverse sections from the most anterior level in which the meridional, radial and circular muscle fibers were recognized, the circular muscle layer anteriorly decreased, whereas the radial muscle layer increased in ratio. Thick muscle fiber bundles immediately below the outermost meridional m

Irisin is mainly secreted by heart and skeletal muscle cells. It is an exercise-induced protein that converts white adipose tissue to brown. Increased irisin expression was lead to weight loss and improved glucose tolerance. We investigated irisin immunoreactivity in various tissues of the dwarf hamsters (Phodopus roborovskii). Tissues were processed, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 5 μm and stained immunohistochemically for irisin. In the retina, irisin was found almost all layers, except outer nuclear layer. Also, irisin immunoreactivity was observed in the skin, cornea, striated muscle,

Neuromuscular choristoma (NMC), also called neuromuscular hamartoma or nerve rhabdomyoma, is a rare lesion of the spinal and cranial nerves composed of skeletal muscle intimately associated with nerve fibers. Its origin has not been precisely clarified and a malformative event, resulting from aberrant differentiation or a true neoplastic growth, have been proposed by authors. We hereby present a cerebellopontine angle NMC enlarging the eighth cranial nerve in a 3-year-old child, that histologically appeared composed of a large amount of striated muscle mixed with nerve fibers. We also provide

Essentials Striated muscle myosins can promote prothrombin activation by FXa or FVa inactivation by APC. Cardiac myosin and skeletal muscle myosin are pro-hemostatic in murine tail cut bleeding models. Infused cardiac myosin exacerbates myocardial injury caused by myocardial ischemia reperfusion. Skeletal muscle myosin isoforms that circulate in human plasma can be grouped into 3 phenotypes. ABSTRACT: Two striated muscle myosins, namely skeletal muscle myosin (SkM) and cardiac myosin (CM), may potentially contribute to physiologic mechanisms for regulation of thrombosis and hemostasis. Thrombi

MyoD is one member of a gene family involved in the regulation of myogenesis. MyoD transfection induces myogenesis in a variety of non-muscle cells. Human amniocytes and fibroblasts were infected with a MyoD-retrovirus vector, to determine whether the converted cells can mature normally to form functional muscle fibers. MyoD-converted cells were cocultured with fetal rat spinal cord. After 2-3 weeks of co-culture cross-striated, contracting muscle fibers were observed. Combined acetylcholinesterase cytochemistry and acetylcholine receptor labeling showed prominent staining at nerve-muscle cont

Restoration of deoxyribonucleic acid in mitochondrial myopathies may occur after a mechanical or chemical injury of striated muscle or by endurance training. Therapies with enzymes, gene therapies, or treatments with substances that stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis are used at the moment. Genesis of mitochondria may also come from myonuclei by releasing the nuclear respiratory factor-1/2 during muscle contractions. Multiplying of myonuclei depends on muscle satellite cell activation. Since the electromyostimulation increase the number of circulating stem cells that may participate in the gen
