[Towards a question of formation mechanisms of hand muscular dystonia].

Review researches on a problem of muscular dystonia mechanisms formation on an example of a writer's cramp (WC) was presented. WC is a movement disorder, task-specific dystonia, characterised by involuntary excessive muscle contractions producing abnormal postures during selective motor activities that often involve highly skilled, repetitive movements. The precise pathophysiology remains unclear, increasing evidence suggests reduced inhibition at different levels of the sensorimotor system. There has also been a greater understanding of the causes ofdystonic movements, from the study of genet

Myokymia and neuromyotonia in veterinary medicine: a comparison with peripheral nerve hyperexcitability syndrome in humans.

Involuntary muscle hyperactivity can result from muscle or peripheral nerve hyperexcitability or central nervous system dysfunction. In humans, diseases causing hyperexcitability of peripheral nerves are grouped together under the term 'peripheral nerve hyperexcitability' (PNH). Hyperexcitability of the peripheral motor nerve can result into five different phenotypic main variants, i.e. fasciculations, myokymia, neuromyotonia, cramps and tetany, each with their own clinical and electromyographic characteristics. This review focuses on the most commonly described expressions of PNH in veterinar

[Continuous intrathecal administration of baclofen in severe tetanus].

This is a case report involving a 71 year old man with generalized tetanus. The patient was initially treated conservatively with sedatives and muscle relaxants, which necessitated intubation and mechanical ventilation. After intrathecal administration of baclofen all cramps and spasms subsided and the patient could be weaned from the respirator and subsequently discharged from the intensive care unit.

Enhanced release of ammonia and hypoxanthine from exercising muscles in patients with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.

Semiischemic forearm exercise tests were carried out in two patients with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism who had muscle cramps and high serum levels of creatine kinase. Although cubital venous lactate levels increased normally after forearm exercise, venous ammonia and hypoxanthine were greatly increased. The abnormal responses of ammonia and hypoxanthine were normalized 3 months after treatment with 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3. These findings suggest that excess purine degradation occurred in exercising muscles of patients with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.

A Case Report of McArdle Disease Diagnosed Following Statin-Induced Myositis.

McArdle disease is a rare condition, characterized by a deficiency of phosphorylase muscle isoform, an enzyme responsible for the breaking down of glycogen, necessary for obtaining energy. Patients typically present with exercise intolerance, myalgias, fatigue, cramps, muscle stiffness, and/or weakness induced by physical activity. The diagnosis is generally established late, with a median delay of about 29 years. We present the case of a female patient with a long history of myalgias, muscle weakness, and exercise intolerance, diagnosed with McArdle disease by the age of 74, after statin-indu
