Musician's dystonia is known as a task specific dystonia. Though it is thought to occur during a long course of repetitive performance, the actual circumstances that precipitate this condition are not clear. According to factual reports this disease is not commonly known, probably because many of these patients may not have been visiting a hospital. We prepared a questionnaire and did a survey among the students of a music college. This is the first questionnaire survey aimed at finding out the prevalence of musician's dystonia among the students of music. Among the 480 participants of this su

Among teachers, music teachers are roughly four times more likely than classroom teachers to develop voice-related problems. Although it has been established that music teachers use their voices at high intensities and durations in the course of their workday, voice-use profiles concerning the amount and intensity of vocal use and vocal load have neither been quantified nor has vocal load for music teachers been compared with classroom teachers using these same voice-use parameters. In this study, total phonation time, fundamental frequency (F₀), and vocal intensity (dB SPL [sound pressure lev

BACKGROUND: The possibility that daily sessions of music-guided slow breathing may reduce 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP), and predictors of efficacy were explored in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial with parallel design.
METHODS: Age-matched and sex-matched hypertensive patients were randomized to music-guided slow breathing exercises (4-6 breaths/min; 1: 2 ratio of inspiration: expiration duration) (Intervention; n = 29) or to control groups who were thought to relax while either listening to slow music (Control-M; n = 26) or reading a book (Control-R; n = 31). At baseline and at

Reward-processing neurocircuitry has been delineated using verbal or visual processing and/or decision-making tasks. We examined more basic processes of listening to enjoyable music in healthy and depressed patients. The paradigm was passive, individualized, and brief. Sixteen depressed and 15 control individuals provided favorite music and identified neutral music from selections provided. In the fMRI scanner, individuals heard their neutral and their favorite music for 3 min each. Favorite versus neutral music-listening contrasts showed greater activation in controls than depressed patients

OBJECTIVE: To perform a comprehensive content analysis of substance use in contemporary popular music.
DESIGN: We analyzed the 279 most popular songs of 2005 according to Billboard magazine. Two coders working independently used a standardized data collection instrument to code portrayals of substance use.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Presence and explicit use of substances and motivations for, associations with, and consequences of substance use.
RESULTS: Of the 279 songs, 93 (33.3%) portrayed substance use, with an average of 35.2 substance references per song-hour. Portrayal of substance use varied

This study examines the importance of music in facilitating well-being for older people who have special needs and discusses how music can contribute to well-being and quality of life. The data derive from qualitative interviews with a sample of older Australians aged 60 years and above who live in rural and urban settings. The findings reveal music can provide many people with ways of feeling competent, feeling less isolated, connecting with other people, and helping in the maintenance of a greater sense of good health. Music facilitates meaning in people's lives and is associated with a pers

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of music on sedation in extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) treatment to compare its anxiolytic effects with those of midazolam.
METHODS: Ninety-eight urolithiasis patients were randomly divided into two groups. Hemodynamic parameters, including mean arterial pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and oxygen saturation, were recorded in all patients. In 50 patients (group 1), 2 mg of midazolam was administered intravenously 5 minutes before ESWL. In group 2 (n = 48), music chosen by the patients was listened to with a headset and continued during

Early models of human cognition can be traced to nineteenth-century investigations of brain and behavior. Influential neurologists such as Wernicke, Kussmaul, and Lichtheim constructed diagrammatic models to illustrate current theories of cognition. Language was the most commonly studied cognitive function during this time; however, investigators also studied other cognitive functions, such as music and visual processing. While a number of nineteenth-century neurologists made observations about music abilities in aphasic patients, August Knoblauch, a German physician and anatomist, was the fir

Music is an ancient method for healing. In the year 550 B.C., Pythagoras from Greece developed a concept for the use of music in medicine, esteeming music higher than many other medical treatments. The Medical Resonance Therapy Music (MRT-Music) of the German classical composer and musicologist Peter Huebner is built on this concept of Pythagorean music medicine. Its therapeutic effect may be best explained by the natural phenomenon of resonance between the harmony laws of the microcosm of music and the biological laws of the body. Results received after application of MRT-Music indicate multi

Seven persons who attended the Glastonbury Music Festival were infected with Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 and an eighth person had serological evidence of infection. Cases were reported from different parts of England. Patients were interviewed by telephone about clinical symptoms, festival attendance, camping details, food history, water exposure, and contact with mud and animals. The interviews identified no common food source, differing use of water sources and widely dispersed camping sites. Escherichia coli O157 strains from seven persons and from a cow belonging to a he

BACKGROUND: Although mechanically ventilated patients experience numerous stressors, they have not been included in music therapy stress reduction and relaxation studies.
OBJECTIVE: To examine selected psychophysiologic responses of mechanically ventilated patients to music.
METHODS: A two-group experimental design with pretest, posttest, and repeated measures was used. Twenty mechanically ventilated patients were randomized to a music-listening group or a nonmusic (headphones only) group. Physiologic dependent measures--heart rate and rhythm, respiratory rate, systolic and diastolic blood p

Over 50% of healthcare providers experience physician burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and an increased risk of medical malpractice. Although burnout is well-documented, fewer studies have examined accessible interventions that may support healthcare professionals during the workday. Studies have associated music-based interventions with reduced stress and increased relaxation. This preliminary study examined whether a brief Restorative Music intervention was associated with short-term changes in emotional state and perceived energy among healthcare profession

What counts as "real time" when musicians perform together across distance? Networked Music Performance (NMP) challenges conventional assumptions about simultaneity, presence, and ensemble by making perceptible the relations that co-located music performance often leaves tacit. This study presents a phenomenological analysis of interviews with 15 experienced NMP practitioners, yielding three primary themes: intimacy at a distance, improvisation, and practical hope for the medium. The central essence of the experience was a felt sense of expanded musical possibility across physical distance. Pa

BACKGROUND: Mycophenolic acid (MPA), a first-line immunosuppressant for preventing transplant organ rejection, exhibits substantial inter- and intra-individual pharmacokinetic variability. We hypothesized that music elements (tempo, rhythm, and harmony) can affect the formation of MPA glucuronide (the major, inactive metabolite, MPAG) and MPA acyl glucuronide (the minor, toxic metabolite, AcMPAG) in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats.
METHODS: SD rats (8-10 weeks; 200-300 g; N = 8 per group [equal sex]) were exposed for 24 h in a sound-monitored room with music combinations (fast or slow tempo with reg

With population aging, policies and practices that support healthy aging can be strengthened by creating accessible environments and incorporating the voices of older adults. This phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of 12 Brazilian older adults participating in a group music therapy process. Over 3 months, a music therapist facilitated 12 weekly music therapy sessions for a group of 12 older adults. Each session lasted an hour and included songs based on participants' musical preferences. Beginning with the 6th session, the group engaged in writing a song addressing t

Music is widely recognized as a powerful elicitor of embodied emotion, yet the precise mechanisms by which auditory patterns are translated into specific bodily feelings remain underspecified. Existing models of contagion and entrainment often lack granular mappings between musical features and distinct interoceptive states. This article proposes a novel theoretical framework viewing musical emotion as an instance of active interoceptive inference. I argue that musical structures (e.g., rhythm, dynamics, timbre) function as "pseudo-interoceptive" evidence. Within a hierarchical generative mode

The neural systems supporting music-induced sadness remain incompletely understood, particularly regarding how affective processing interacts with memory. In this exploratory study, activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis examined convergent neural responses to music-induced sadness across nine functional neuroimaging studies (155 participants, 25 activation foci). Coordinates reported in Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) space were analyzed using GingerALE (version 3.0.2) under a random-effects model with cluster-level family-wise error (FWE) correction (p < 0.01) and voxel-l

IMPORTANCE: Loud music in group fitness classes is often believed to enhance motivation and performance but poses a risk for noise-induced hearing loss.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether lower music volume during fitness classes results in comparable perceived exertion compared with higher music levels and to explore hearing protection behaviors among participants.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This comparative effectiveness study using a partially repeated measures design surveyed group fitness class attendees from February 1 to 28, 2025, at a fitness studio in Los Angeles, California, rega

Modern anesthesia has achieved remarkable advances in safety, monitoring, and pharmacologic precision, yet perioperative anxiety continues to be a common and under-addressed aspect of surgical care, affecting a substantial proportion of patients undergoing surgery. Patients increasingly request personalized music during transport to the operating room and prior to anesthetic induction. Although often viewed as a comfort measure, this practice may represent an important component of a wider movement toward human-centered perioperative care. This narrative review summarizes contemporary evidence
