Myiasis is a rare disease primarily caused by the invasion of tissue by larvae of certain dipteran flies. Common predisposing factors are poor oral hygiene, halitosis, trauma, senility, learning disabilities, physically and mentally challenged conditions. A 40-year-old female patient reported with pain in the maxillary anterior region with difficulty in chewing since 1 month. The clinical examination revealed the presence of maggots which helped in arriving at the diagnosis. The possible causes, clinical features and treatment has been discussed.

Head and neck cancer patients represent a risk group for the development of fly larvae infestation in neoplastic wounds. This condition can accelerate the disease progression and increase its lethality due to local or systemic complications. The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review on head and neck cancer associated with myiasis in order to answer the focal question: what are the occurrence, diagnosis, aetiology, treatment and outcomes of head and neck cancer associated with myiasis? This paper was structured based on the five-steps methodology proposed by Arksey and O'Malley (Int…

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous myiasis is a self-limited skin infestation by developing fly larvae, with three clinical subtypes: furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis. Furuncular myiasis is endemic throughout much of Africa; however, few reports are from the Horn of Africa.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: An 85-year-old woman in Somaliland presented with a 12-day history of multiple painful and pruritic nodules on the temple, arm, chest, breast, flank, and legs. The posterior of a larva was visible within several lesions. One larva was extracted from an arm nodule and identified as Cordylobia anthropophaga…

Various case reports on nasal myiasis written during the 1990s and 2000s state that nasal myiasis, which is known as peenash among South Asian natives, is a form of divine punishment in Hindu mythology, but do not provide citations from Hindu scriptures that would suggest this interpretation. This paper aims to discuss the phenomenon of peenash in a historical context by examining medical literature written during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to identify Hindu texts contributing to the belief of some Hindus that nasal myiasis is a form of divine punishment, and to provide an o…

BACKGROUND: Ocular myiasis though rare, is usually found in association with basal cell carcinoma. It is rarer still in tumors other than basal cell carcinoma. We report a case of ocular myiasis in a glioma which is hitherto unreported to the best of our knowledge.
CASE: A 50 year old male presented with bleeding and maggots emanating from a tumourous outgrowth which had replaced his right eye. He complained of swelling and pain in his right eye for the last 2 years. Manual removal of maggots was carried out following which he underwent total excision of the mass and local debridement. Biopsy…

Myiasis is a rare condition caused by the invasion of tissues by the larvae of flies. Many cases of myiasis involving various human organs have been reported. Tracheopulmonary or intratracheal myiasis is a very unusual and aberrant form of the disease in humans. We present a case of respiratory myiasis after aspiration of larvae by a healthy 8-month-old girl, which cannot be found in the English literature.

Advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a challenge for treatment. It is also a risk factor for unintended infestation with diptera larvae (maggots) known as myiasis. We performed a retrospective investigation in our files from 2001 to 2014 and identified three patients with SCC-associated myiasis (three men). In all three cases, Lucilia spp. were found. A literature review using PUBMED revealed another 12 cases of SCC-associated myiasis due to different species. It is not only a disease of older age, as two of the patients were in their 20s. The male to female ratio was 2 to 1. Wound myiasi…

Myiasis is a rare disease primarily caused by the invasion of tissue by larvae of certain dipteran flies. Oral myiasis is still more "rare" and "unique" owing to the fact that oral cavity rarely provides the necessary habitat conducive for a larval lifecycle. Common predisposing factors are poor oral hygiene, halitosis, trauma, senility, learning disabilities, physically and mentally challenged conditions. Oral myiasis can lead to rapid tissue destruction and disfigurement and requires immediate treatment. Treatment consists of manual removal of maggots from the oral cavity after application o…

Oral Myiasis is a rare disease that is mostly reported in developing countries. It is primarily caused by the invasion of the human body by fly larvae. The phenomenon is well-documented in the skin, especially among animals. This case report describes the presentation of Oral Myiasis caused by Musca Nebulo (common house fly), in a 28-year-old patient, with recent maxillofacial trauma. The patient was treated by manual removal of the larvae, after topical application of turpentine oil, followed by surgical debridement and oral therapy with Ivermectin.

A 15-year-old girl presented with a chief complaint of bleeding from her nose. She had noticed worms emerging from her right nostril. She had a continuous dull ache on the right side of her nose, spreading over the maxillary sinus area, and on the infra-orbital margin on the same side. She complained of difficulty breathing through her right nostril and a foul smell, which was associated with orbital oedema. Intra-oral examination revealed erythema of the soft palate on the same side, which was tender on palpation. Her condition was diagnosed as nasal myiasis with orbital and palatal extension…

Myiasis is caused by the invasion of tissues or organs of men and animals by dipterous larvae. The disease is infrequent in Turkey. A case of a 65-year-old woman having been initially diagnosed with chronic psychosis, and found to have a left big toe nail invaded by the larvae of Calliphora spp., is presented. A total of 17 maggots were removed from the left big toe of the patient, which were then determined as Calliphora spp. The patient has undergone surgical withdrawal of both nails of her big toes, followed by the administration of oral prophylactic antimicrobial treatment. This is the sec…

Dipterous of the genus Ornidia are pollinator bugs, but immature stages can be found in organic matter in decomposition. This article refers … the genus Ornidia. According to the literature, this specie of Diptera is not incriminated to cause myiasis in vertebrates. We think that this study reports a case of accidental myiasis in humans, were the patient may have ingested food with immature stages of the fly (eggs or larvae).

Cutaneous myiasis is easy to diagnose and treat if clinicians are aware of the condition. Because of widespread travel, physicians may encounter this infestation in patients living in geographical regions where the condition is rare. A child is presented with cutaneous myiasis that presented as furuncle-like nodules on the scalp. The larvae were identified as a stage of the bluebottle-like fly, Dermatobia hominis.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae feeding on the host's tissue. We report on a 49-year-old patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease with aural myiasis. Clinical examination revealed sanguineous and smeary otorrhoea on the left side with 16 alive maggots occupying the ear. They were removed from the external auditory canal and classified as larvae of the family Sarcophagida. Aural manifestation of myiasis may become dangerous if the petrous bone is affected. Entomological aspects, clinical characteristics, and treatment of this rare disease are reviewed.

Eristalis tenax, belonging to order Diptera, family Syrphidae seldomly causes intestinal myiasis. Urinary myiasis caused by Eristalis tenax larvae is a rare manifestation found in both humans and other vertebrate animals. We report a 58-y-old woman presented with painful mixing and bilateral costo-lumbar pain. The larva in her urine sample was identified as Eristalis tenax related to its typical morphology.
