Rhabdomyolysis-induced acute renal failure is rare in a child. In this paper, we describe a young girl with this condition who unfortunately succumbed to adult respiratory distress syndrome. Renal biopsy confirmed the presence of tubular myoglobin casts and acute tubular necrosis but no cause for the rhabdomyolysis could be documented.

A patient with subtotal small bowel resection after mesenterial vein thrombosis presented with muscular weakness and pain. An increase in the activities of enzymes of muscular origin and of myoglobin in serum was found and myoglobinuria was detected. Muscle damage in this patient is attributed to electrolyte disturbances following extensive small bowel resection.

Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome characterized by the breakdown of skeletal muscle and leakage of intracellular myocyte contents, such as creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and myoglobin, into the interstitial space and plasma resulting in acute kidney injury (AKI). The proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of sulfmyoglobin cyanide was studied at 400 MHz. The position of a methyl-group resonance at low field is consistent with a chlorin-like structure for the prosthetic group. The proton NMR spectrum of the cyanide derivative of the purified prosthetic group which decomposes upon extraction from the protein was found to be the same as that of the cyanide derivative of the prosthetic group extracted from myoglobin and a sample prepared from hemin-Cl.

Biochemical evidence of skeletal muscle damage is common in malaria, but rhabdomyolysis appears to be rare. To investigate the relationship between serum creatine kinase and myoglobin levels, muscle histology, and renal function in Plasmodium falciparum infections, we studied 13 patients with uncomplicated malaria, 13 with severe noncerebral malaria, and 10 with cerebral malaria. Nine cases of malignant "triton" tumors, based on the coexistence of rhabdomyoblasts and Schwann cell elements, were analyzed clinicopathologically and immunocytochemically. All tumors were stained for myoglobin and S-100 protein by the immunoperoxidase technique. Six of the nine patients were in the third or fourth decade of life.
