Limb Lengthening With Precice Intramedullary Lengthening Nails in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The Precice intramedullary bone lengthening nail has been used in our department since 2013. We sought to determine the efficacy and safety of intramedullary limb lengthening with Precice nails in children and adolescents. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated patients 18 years and younger who underwent lower-limb lengthening using the Precice nail. Radiologic and clinical outcome data were obtained from a prospective database. The minimum postimplantation follow-up was 12 months. Between March 2013 and March 2020, 161 patients underwent limb lengthening with a Precice nail; 76…

Signature of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in nails and hair.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is detected in extrahepatic tissues of individuals with HBV infection. Whether nails and hair contain HBV has been unknown. METHODS: We examined two patient groups: those with chronic HBV infection alone (n = 71), and those with both chronic HBV and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infections (n = 15). HBV DNA in the patients' fingernails and hair were measured by real-time PCR. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) of fingernails was evaluated by an enzyme immunoassay. HDV RNA in fingernails was measured by real-time PCR. Immunochemical staining was performed on …

Latest Advances in Limb Lengthening Using Magnetically Controlled Intramedullary Lengthening Nails.

Magnetically controlled intramedullary lengthening nails (MCILN) have revolutionized the field of limb lengthening and deformity correction. They allow for accurate and precise distraction with excellent patient outcomes and satisfaction. Though potentially technically easier than external fixation, general deformity principles and bone and soft-tissue biology must be considered for successful use. MCILN can address deformities of a wide range of etiologies including congenital, posttraumatic, post-infectious, tumor, and many others with excellent healing rates and outcomes as well as better p…

Pathogenesis, Clinical Signs and Treatment Recommendations in Brittle Nails: A Review.

Nail plate brittleness (or fragility) is a common complaint affecting up to 20% of the population, especially women over 50 years of age, with fingernail fragility being more prevalent than toenail fragility. Nail brittleness is characterized by nails that split, flake and crumble, become soft and lose elasticity. The main clinical presentations are: onychoschizia, onychorrhexis, superficial granulation of keratin and worn-down nails. According to causative factors, we can distinguish 2 forms of nail fragility (NF): a primary "idiopathic or brittle nail syndrome" form and NF secondary to diffe…

Treatment of Unstable Pediatric Tibial Shaft Fractures with Titanium Elastic Nails.

Background and objectives: Pediatric tibial shaft fractures often have satisfactory outcomes after closed reduction and casting. However, surgical treatment may be required in unstable or open fractures. Titanium elastic nails (TENs) are a good option for the surgical treatment of pediatric tibial fractures due to their advantages such as short hospitalization periods, easy applicability, early weight bearing, and early union. In this study, we evaluated radiological and functional outcomes in pediatric patients with tibial shaft fractures that underwent fixation with TENs. Materials and metho…

Eyelid Dermatitis Caused by Allergic Contact to Acrylates in Artificial Nails.

Over the past few years, there has been an increase in cases of allergic contact dermatitis caused by acrylates, because of the growing popularity of artificial nails. Pathological reactions to artificial nails typically occur on or around the nail area. Eyelid contact dermatitis due to artificial nails is rarely seen, especially in a nonoccupational setting. The authors report the case of a 45-year-old female accountant who developed eyelid dermatitis due to artificial nails.

Use of Titanium Elastic Nails in the Adult Diaphyseal Humerus Fractures.

Introduction: Humerus shaft fractures in adults can be managed conservatively with functional braces or operatively with plate osteosynthesis or with intramedullary nailing. Conventionally humerus intramedullary nailing is done either using humerus interlocking nails or Enders nails. In this study we analyse the outcome of humerus shaft fractures (upper and middle third) managed with closed ante-grade intramedullary titanium elastic nailing in terms of union rates, union time, functional results and complications. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of 25 patients treated with ante…

Refractures following removal of plates and elastic nails from paediatric forearms.

We assessed the risk for refractures following removal of elastic nails and plates from paediatric forearms. Out of 82 children who had 112 plates removed, seven patients (8.5%) had refractures when removals were within 12 months of implantation. Those aged 12 years or older were at risk. Out of 24 patients who had 38 nails removed, four patients (16.7%) had refractures and the risk was high when nails were removed within 6 months of insertion. Children aged 9 years or older were at risk. We do not recommend removal of forearm plates within 12 months and nails within 6 months of implantation.

Effectiveness of systemic treatment agents on psoriatic nails: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Nails, one of the most visible sites of body, are frequently involved in psoriasis and accepted as the most difficult site for topical treatment because of their anatomical structure. Healing of the psoriatic nails usually occurs when systemic therapy is initiated to treat severe skin psoriasis or joint involvement, but sometimes systemic therapy is essential for severe nail psoriasis, although Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score is low or none of the joints are affected. In this case, knowing which systemic agent is most potent on nail findings is important. AIM: We ai…
