During childhood, pathologic fractures are found in systemic diseases of the skeleton (e.g. osteogenesis imperfecta or rachitis), but especially when bone tumors or tumorlike changes are present. Conservative measures such as continuous traction and application of a plaster cast lead to healing of the fracture only in a limited number of cases. Treatment of benign and potentially malignant and tumors and of tumorlike growths by excochleation and by resection and subsequent filling of the defect with autologous spongiosa and in some cases metallic fixation respectively has proved useful. The light and electron microscopic as well as the histochemical characteristics of a papillary cystadenofibroma of the endometrium are described. The neoplasm arose in the lower uterine segment and was composed of a florid fibroblastic growth arranged in club-shaped papillae projecting into clefts and cystic spaces. The epithelium lining the plicae, recesses, and cysts was exclusively of the mucous-secreting type and bore identical histochemical and subcellular characteristics to that of the normal endocervical epithelium. Essentially similar papillary lesions were recently reported in the end

Ovarian leiomyomas are very rare in domestic cats and occasionally mentioned in studies reporting general pathological findings and neoplasm occurrence in non-domestic large felids. This report describes a case of ovarian leiomyoma in a 22-year-old white tiger (Panthera tiger), treated with deslorelin implants, detailing pathological and immunohistochemical characteristics. Gross examination revealed a markedly enlarged, firm, whitish right ovary with a multinodular appearance. On a cut surface, multiple brown-fluid-filled cysts interspersed with solid grey-to-white areas were observed. On his

We retrospectively analyzed the cases of 148 febrile patients whose body temperature (BT) was ≥ 37.5°C at our hospital. We categorized them into seven groups; those with bacterial and viral infection, nonspecific inflammation, neoplasm, connective tissue disease (CTD), drug-induced disease, and unidentified causes. Our analysis revealed that the patient's BT at the 1st visit (BT-1st visit) and highest BT during the febrile period (BT-max) differed significantly among all categories except neoplasm. The greatest difference between BT-1st visit and BT-max was highest in the CTD group (1.5°C). Po

OBJECTIVES: Naturally occurring tumours in domestic cats are less common than in dogs and represent the leading cause of death among older animals. The main objective of this study was to analyse a large data set of histologically diagnosed tumours to highlight the most common World Health Organization (WHO) tumour histotypes, the effect of age and sex, and the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O) topographical site predilections of feline breed-specific tumours.
METHODS: A total of 680 feline tumours diagnosed in European Shorthair cats by three veterinary diagnostic

Calretinin is an intracellular calcium-binding EF-hand protein of the calmodulin superfamily. It plays a role in diverse cellular functions, including message targeting and intracellular calcium signaling. It is expressed in the mesothelium, mast cells, some neural cells, and fat cells, among others. Because of its relative specificity for mesothelial neoplasms, calretinin is widely used as one of the primary immunohistochemical markers for malignant mesothelioma and in differentiating it from adenocarcinoma. On the basis of our sporadic observation on calretinin immunoreactivity in desmoid fi

Relationships between autoimmune rheumatic diseases and malignant neoplasms have been discussed, but there is no study of the different rheumatic diseases examining the risk of developing cancer. Our study has examined probabilities for developing malignancy among patients with connective tissue diseases seen in a single institution. Patients with autoimmune rheumatic disease and malignancy were compared with patients with the same autoimmune rheumatic diseases without malignancy. All cases identified through record-linkage from 1964 to 1996 were selected. Four controls per case were randomly

Hypophosphatemia with osteomalacia may be due to a neoplasm that produces fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), which inhibits phosphate reabsorption in the kidneys. Most of these tumors occur in bone or soft tissue and occasionally in the head, although intracranial occurrence is very rare. This report describes a tumor that caused hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia and was located entirely in the right anterior cranial fossa. Radiologically, the tumor resembled a meningioma; histologically, it was a low-grade phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor, mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT). After gros

AIMS: NTRK-rearranged sarcomas of the female genital tract mainly occur in the uterus (more commonly cervix than corpus) and are characterized by a "fibrosarcoma-like" morphology and NTRK gene rearrangements. These neoplasms may exhibit histological overlap with other entities and can present diagnostic difficulties without molecular confirmation. Pan-TRK immunohistochemistry was developed to identify tumours harbouring NTRK rearrangements. The aim of this study was to characterize pan-TRK immunohistochemical expression in a large cohort of gynaecological mesenchymal neoplasms and investigate

This article presents 2 cases of TFG::MET-rearranged mesenchymal tumor, an extremely rare molecular subset among an emerging group of mesenchymal neoplasms with kinase gene (NTRK, BRAF, RET and others) alterations. Both tumors were congenital, occurred in female patients and presented as huge masses on the trunk and thigh, measuring 18 and 20 cm in the largest dimension. Both cases showed identical areas with a distinctive triphasic morphology resembling fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI), consisting of haphazardly arranged ovoid to spindled cells traversed by variably cellular and hyalinized

BACKGROUND: Limb salvage has better functional outcomes than amputation in the upper extremity. This can however be challenging after bony tumor resections.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of patients who underwent humerus, ulna, or radius reconstruction with a fibula free flap. Data were collected on demographics, oncologic history, surgical details, and complications. Functional outcome measures included the patient's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL), presence of pain, and musculoskeletal tumor society (MSTS) score.
RESULTS: Over a 25-year period, 38 reconst

Fibromatoses are a group of benign connective tissue tumors characterized by the infiltrative, aggressive proliferation of well-differentiated fibroblasts, leading to frequent local recurrence. Within this heterogeneous disease group, superficial fibromatoses show slower growth and more benign infiltration of surrounding tissues than deep fibromatoses. Superficial fibromatoses relevant to dermatology include palmar, plantar, and penile fibromatosis, knuckle pads, pachydermodactyly and infantile digital fibromatosis. They present clinically with subcutaneous nodules or cords that lead to local

Low-affinity nerve growth factor receptor (p75) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor family. It may modulate the binding of nerve growth factor (NGF) to the functional high-affinity receptor tyrosine kinase (trk) A. NGF is thought to be responsible for growth, apoptosis, and function of the nervous system. The presence of this receptor (p75) was determined in a large group of neural and nonneural tumors and fetal and adult tissues. One thousand one hundred fifty tumors were analyzed with monoclonal antibody for p75, along with selected normal fetal and adult tissues. Immunoreactiv

Tumour-induced osteomalacia is a metabolic disorder that causes hypophosphataemia, resulting in bone mineralisation defects. If not treated definitively with tumour resection, this produces life-threatening anatomical changes. The anaesthetic management is tailored to address tumour location, perioperative positioning, as well as airway and pulmonary concerns. We report the anaesthesia delivery for the surgical excision of a tibial mass in a man in his late 30s with oncogenic osteomalacia. He had cervical spine deformity, pectus carinatum, severe kyphosis, lower limb atrophy with flexion contra

Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare, benign condition characterized histologically by increased numbers of eccrine elements, as well as numerous capillary channels. In most cases, EAH arises as a single lesion; however, multiple variants have been reported. We report a 35-year-old female patient with multiple, sudoriparous, subcutaneous nodules on the right foot, which showed typical histopathological findings of EAH, and vascular components of the tumor consisted of thin-walled dilated vascular spaces intermixed with spindle cells and some histiocytoid endothelial cells representing

A Belgian shepherd dog aged 4 years and 9 months was presented with acute onset of non-weight bearing lameness and stifle effusion of the left hind limb, caused by the deep form of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma originating in the deep musculature and fascia surrounding the stifle joint. The tumour progressed rapidly in the tissues along the femoral diaphysis with marked periosteal new bone formation. Cytology of a stifle joint aspirate revealed numerous large polygonal neoplastic cells with considerable anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. These cells were present in clusters, with cytoplasmic p
