Fine needle aspiration biopsy of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. A report of two cases with a discussion of diagnostic pitfalls.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of a peripheral pulmonary nodule presents a challenge due to many diagnostic possibilities and pitfalls. We describe the cytologic features of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura, differential diagnoses, pertinent immunohistochemical stains and histogenesis. CASES: Two cases of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura showed two cell populations on cytologic preparations; mesothelial cells and spindle cells. The neoplastic spindle cell component was positive for CD-34 and vimentin but not for cytokeratin. CONCLUSION: Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is rare but sho

Malignant histiocytomas.

During the past ten years, the histiogenesis of malignant histiocytomas and a group of related benign and malignant lesions have been the source of speculation. Although of heterogeneous histological appearance, it is believed that there is a common cell of origin for these neoplasms--the histiocyte. From 1966 to 1974, 16 patients were encountered who had neoplasms that fell into the general group of malignant histiocytomas. These tumors were variously located in the extremities, head, chest wall, retroperitoneum, lung, spermatic cord, and lower abdomen. Surgical treatment included radical amp

Oral neoplasms in pickhandle barracuda Sphyraena jello from India.

We report the spontaneous occurrence of oral neoplasms in pickhandle barracuda Sphyraena jello Cuvier, 1829 from Parangipettai, on the southeast coast of India. A total of 11736 fish were examined, of which 43 were affected with oral tumours, with an overall prevalence of 0.37%. Gross and clinical symptoms included reddish to grayish-white distended tumourous growths on the gingiva, intra-oral bones and tongue. The tumours exhibited delayed eruption and intra- or extra-oral swelling, varied in consistency from extremely firm to fleshy and released mucinous material. The majority of tumours con

Spinal Intramedullary Solitary Fibrous Tumor: A Rare and Challenging Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a benign neoplasm arising in the soft tissue, which can occur anywhere in the body, while it is predominantly found in the visceral pleura. Spinal SFT is quite uncommon, with limited cases having been reported in the literature; especially, SFT occurring in the intramedullary site is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 35-year-old woman presenting with progressive numbness and weakness in the legs and urinary incontinence. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an intramedullary lesion with bright enhancement. A diagnosis of s

Thread-like bridging strands: a morphologic feature present in all adenomatoid tumors.

Adenomatoid tumor (AT) is a benign, relatively rare neoplasm occurring primarily in the genital tract of both genders. Histologically, ATs were composed of fibrous tissue, which are separated by numerous slit-like and pseudotubular spaces. Peculiar "thread-like bridging strands" (TBS) crossing the pseudotubular spaces are typical morphologic feature. In this study, the frequency of occurrence of these TBS within a large series of ATs in various organs was examined. Sixty-nine cases were included in our study. Twenty-eight cases occurred in women, 41 cases in men. Tumors were located in the myo

Kuttner tumor of the submandibular gland: fine-needle aspiration cytologic findings of seven cases.

Kuttner tumor or chronic sclerosing sialadenitis is a benign inflammatory condition of the submandibular gland that mimics a malignant neoplasm clinically because of presentation as a hard mass. This is an underrecognized entity in the surgical pathology and cytology literature. We describe thefine-needle aspiration cytologic findings of 7 cases with histologic correlation. The 6 men and 1 woman (age, 47-72 years) had unilateral (4 cases) or bilateral (3 cases) submandibular masses known to be present for 1 month to 6 years (mean, 15 months). The aspirates were paucicellular to moderately cell

Solitary fibrous tumor: a study of cytologic features of six cases diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a spindle-cell neoplasm most often presenting as a pleural-based tumor but increasingly recognized in other locations. Few reports have described the cytologic features of SFTs. Six cases of SFT diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration (3 pleura, 2 retroperitoneum, and 1 orbit) were identified in the Mayo Clinic files. The smears (Papanicolaou-stained) and corresponding histologic specimens were reviewed. Immunohistochemical staining for CD34 was performed in all cases. The cytologic findings were similar in all cases. The tumor cells were oval to polygonal, with cel

Large solitary fibrous tumour of the retroperitoneum: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: This report describes an unusual case of a large solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) arising in the retroperitoneum. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old woman presented at the Emergency Department with urinary retention and lumbar pain. The urological examination was negative, whereas a presacral retroperitoneal mass was disclosed on ultrasound. The laboratory studies, including tumour markers, were negative. On laparotomy, it was not possible to remove the mass completely due to the difficulty of dissecting it free of the sacrum. Grossly, the fragment had a yellowish-white surface, with

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura.

BACKGROUND: The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare primary tumor arising from mesenchymal cells in the areolar tissue subjacent to the mesothelial-lined pleura. Only about 800 cases have been reported in the medical literature. The tumor appears to be unrelated to malignant pleural mesothelioma, the most common primary tumor of the pleura. METHODS: In just over half of these cases, the neoplasm presents as an asymptomatic mass, is often quite large, and is benign in 78% to 88% of patients. The initial evaluation and diagnosis, tumor classification, surgical treatment, resul

Scratch cytologic findings on surgically resected solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the cytologic characteristics of solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTPs) on smear preparations. STUDY DESIGN: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was initially attempted preoperatively in five cases, but the specimens were inappropriate for interpretation because only a few tumor cells were obtained. Therefore, scratch smears made at the time of operation were used. Papanicolaou and immunocytochemical staining was performed in all 10 cases, 2 of which were malignant. RESULTS: As expected, cellular tumors yielded more cells. The cytologic appearance was variab

[Subtotal reconstructive laryngectomy: author's experience].

The authors conclude 18 year's experience with reconstructive laryngectomy by adopting two surgical techniques for intrinsic laryngeal tumors. The first, where one or both of the arytenoids are conserved, can be applied in cases of supraglottic neoplasms extending to the glottis as well as in glottic cancers where a simple cordectomy is not feasible. In both cases this technique is indicated when at least one arytenoid is respected. The second technique involves removal of both arytenoids and is used in cases of intrinsic supraglottic or glottic tumors extended to both arytenoids. The anatomic

Myxofibrosarcoma. Clinicopathologic analysis of 75 cases with emphasis on the low-grade variant.

Myxofibrosarcoma is one of the most common sarcomas in the extremities of elderly patients. We analysed the clinicopathologic features in a series of 75 patients. All patients were adults (range, 22-91 years; median, 66 years) with an approximately equal incidence in men and women. Thirty-five tumors arose in the lower and 25 in the upper extremities, nine on the trunk, two each in the retroperitoneum and the head and neck region, and one each in the pelvis and penis. Forty-eight cases (69.5%) were located in dermal or subcutaneous tissues. Distinctive histologic features included the followin

Nodular fasciitis and solitary fibrous tumor of the oral region: tumors of fibroblast heterogeneity.

OBJECTIVE: Fibroblastic proliferations of the oral cavity are extremely varied, yet they share certain features-spindle cell morphology, collagen synthesis, and fasciculation. Nodular fasciitis is a cellular fibroblastic lesion, uncommonly located in the oral submucosa, that shows smooth muscle actin (SMA) immunoreactivity. Solitary fibrous tumor expresses a CD34 fibroblast phenotype. The aim of this study is to report instances of nodular fasciitis and solitary fibrous tumor in the orofacial region and investigate immunohistochemical markers to compare and contrast fibroblastic phenotypic het

Epidermal growth factor receptor and insulin-like growth factor-I receptor expression and function in human soft-tissue sarcoma cells.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) receptors are implicated in the development and progression of several malignancies including osteogenic and soft tissue sarcomas (STS). To determine a role for ligand-mediated receptor activation in sarcoma progression, the relative expression and function of EGF-R, IGF-I-R, and several other molecular determinants implicated in the progression of mesenchymal neoplasms were evaluated in human sarcoma cells established from surgical specimens of primary and metastatic tumors. mRNA blot analyses demonstrated the expression o

Huge spindle cell sarcoma of esophagus in a middle-aged man with a recent-onset dysphagia: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal sarcoma is a rare neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. The majority of the esophageal neoplasms have an epithelial origin. In this report, we present a case of a middle-aged man with an enormous spindle cell sarcoma whose symptoms initiated only a few weeks before diagnosis. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 41-year-old man with an unremarkable past medical history and physical examination presented with recent aggravation of cough and severe, progressive dysphagia to solid foods resulting in a 25-kilogram weight loss without any prior symptoms. He had no history of cigarett

A malignant solitary fibrous tumour arising from the first lumbar vertebra and mimicking an osteosarcoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: A solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an unusual neoplasm typically found in soft tissues. Although SFTs can arise in the bones, they very rarely arise in the vertebral arch. Here, we describe a case of a SFT that arose in the vertebral arch of the first lumbar (L1) spinal vertebrae and mimicked osteosarcoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of lower back pain and a lumbar region mass. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a heterogeneously enhanced mass in the L1 vertebral arch. The patient received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, followed by a sur

Analysis of K-ras gene mutations in rare pancreatic and ampullary tumours.

OBJECTIVE: Mutation of the K-ras oncogene is a frequent event in pancreatic ductal carcinogenesis and it is believed to occur at an early stage in the development of pancreatic cancer. However, little is known of the role of K-ras mutations in rare pancreatic epithelial neoplasms, endocrine tumours or other non-epithelial tumours of the pancreas. Furthermore, limited data are available regarding the role of K-ras mutations in the pathogenesis of ampullary tumours. DESIGN AND METHODS: Using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) and direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-
