[Synchronous occurrence of four malignancies in a 55-year-old woman with uterine cervical cancer. Case report and review of literature].

Multiple primary malignancies are no longer rare in clinical practice. The incidence of multiple primary malignant neoplasms is the consequence of progress in oncological treatment and diagnostic methods, as well as the higher overall survival rate and life expectancy rate. We present a case of a patient who synchronously developed four malignancies: cervical cancer, breast cancer, chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) and an olfactory groove meningioma. This case proves that the diagnosis of the cervical cancer does not exclude the occurrence of other malignancies.

[A Case of Pulmonary Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma Associated with Multiple Cancers].

A 66-year-old woman presented with multiple nodular lesions of approximately 5 mm in the bilateral lower lobes on computed tomography during a close examination for gastric cancer and a left renal tumor. Because a pathological diagnosis of pulmonary neoplastic lesions is necessary to determine the treatment plan, the patient underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery S8 segmental resection of the right lower lobe for diagnostic purposes. Postoperative pathological diagnosis revealed pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. Subsequently, surgery was performed separately for the left renal tum

Multiple primary cancer in the female genital system: Two rare case reports and a literature review.

RATIONALE: Multiple primary cancer (MPC) refers to tumors that occur in one or multiple organs within the same patient at the same time or at different periods. MPC often occurs in the head and neck, but is rarely reported in the female genital system. PATIENT CONCERNS: In the present study, we report 2 rare cases that presented with tangible lower abdominal tumors. DIAGNOSES: Laboratory tests, pelvic ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and fast histopathological examinations during surgery indicated a diagnosis of MPC. INTERVENTIONS: The 2 patients all received radical resections of

Mistaken identity: endometrial or rectal cancer?

A 59-year-old woman with a previous history of endometrial and breast cancer was referred to the colorectal rapid access clinic with abdominal cramps, per rectal bleeding and diarrhoea. CT, MRI and flexible sigmoidoscopy confirmed a rectal tumour and due to its appearance, it was thought to be a primary rectal malignancy. The patient underwent an anterior resection and end colostomy. Histology confirmed a metastatic endometrial adenocarcinoma, which is an unusual site for endometrial metastasis. Her postoperative recovery has been unremarkable and the patient has subsequently been discharged f

Mediastinal and retroperitoneal teratoma with focal gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma.

We report an unusual case of gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma arising in a giant posterior mediastinal mature cystic teratoma extending into the retroperitoneum, which was treated by complete excision with a good outcome for more than 2 years. Teratomas with malignant transformation are rare non-germ cell malignant tumors arising from a preexisting mature teratoma. Histological examination revealed that the cyst wall was composed of mature ectodermal, mesodermal, and endodermal elements. Neoplastic glands with a cribriform pattern were found in a small, solid nodule. Strong cytokeratin 20 cytop

Repeated multifocal recurrence of grade I, grade II, and grade III meningiomas: regional multicentricity (primary new growth) or metastases?

In this study 48 patients with histologic grade I and 41 with grade II/III meningiomas were reviewed retrospectively for the occurrence of multifocal tumor masses in relation to recurrence. Regional multicentric tumor masses were increasingly seen in progressive disease with repeated recurrence and occurred significantly more frequently in grade II/III compared to grade I meningiomas. Small microscopic tumor extensions along the subdural space around the tumor bulk, defined as tumor spurs, could be documented as an alternative form of multifocal disease. The occurrence of these spurs was assoc

Medulloblastoma metastasizing to a breast fibroadenoma: a case report.

The extracranial spread of primary intercranial tumours is infrequent, occurring most commonly with medulloblastoma. The spread of one malignant tumour to a second tumour, benign or malignant, is also very rare. This case appears to be unique, in that a primary malignant cerebral tumour metastasized to a benign extracranial tumour.

Leiomyomatosis of the colon.

Excluding the rectum, smooth muscle cell tumors of the large bowel are extremely rare lesions. A unique case is reported of an infiltrating multinodular myomatous growth of semi-constrictive type affecting the ascending and transverse colon along its entire circumference and over a length of 35 cm. In the mesocolon near the colonic wall two tumor foci were present. Contrary to expectations from the growth behavior, histological examination revealed well differentiated smooth muscle cells with distinct myofilaments and absence of nuclear abnormalities and mitotic figures. No clinical evidence o

Bilateral breast cancers in an Asian population, and a comparison between synchronous and metachronous tumours.

BACKGROUND: Women with unilateral breast cancer have an increased risk of developing bilateral breast cancer (BBC). Patients with metachronous BBC (mBBC) usually have an earlier age of onset, and their prognoses have been shown to be either similar or poorer than those with synchronous BBC (sBBC). Given the differing presentation and characteristics of breast cancers in the Asian population and the West, this study aims to characterize Asian patients with BBC. METHODS: All patients who had oncological breast surgery between 2001 and 2010 at the Singapore General Hospital and National Cancer C

[Synchronous association of two primary lung tumors: a case report].

Synchronous multiple primary lung tumors are a relatively rare entity with an increasing incidence in recent years due to the development of thoracic imaging and immunohistochemical techniques. The second lesion is considered in most cases as a secondary location, which partly explains the decrease in the incidence of this entity. We report the observation of a 74-year-old patient with two synchronous primary lung tumors, an adenocarcinoma and an epidermoid carcinoma. Through this clinical observation, we highlight the difficulty of diagnosing synchronous tumors and the major interest of new i

Intracholecystic Papillary-Tubular Neoplasms (ICPN) of the Gallbladder.

Intracholecystic Papillary-Tubular Neoplasm (ICPN) is a rare tumor characterized by intraluminal papillary growth which may be associated with invasive carcinoma. In this study, we aimed to present the patient with the final pathologic diagnosis of end-stage ICPN presenting with the preliminary diagnosis of Gallbladder cancer. Key words: Cholecystectomy, Intracholecystic papillary neoplasm, Gallbladder cancer.

Small cell carcinoma of gall bladder: An uncommon histologic entity.

Introduction: Gall bladder (GB) small cell carcinoma (SCC) comprises 0.5% of all gall bladder cancers. It carries a poor prognosis in view of its aggressive nature.
Case report: We here report a case of small cell carcinoma of GB in a female who presented with obstructive jaundice. Examination revealed a hard lump in the right upper abdomen. Tumour markers showed raised CA 19-9. Staging CECT of the thorax and abdomen reported polypoidal enhancing wall thickening of the gall bladder with multiple metastatic deposits close to the pancreatic head en

Scleromyxedematous Changes in a Patient With Long-Standing Mycosis Fungoides Who Progressed to Sézary Syndrome.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) variants with different clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features have been well-delineated. We report a case of scleromyxedematous changes arising in a patient with long-standing MF who progressed to Sézary syndrome (SS) shortly afterward. Total-skin electron-beam radiation therapy resulted in an excellent response, controlling both the MF/SS and the scleromyxedematous lesions; however, the patient died few months later. Although mucin deposition has been described in association with MF/SS (mainly follicular mucinosis in folliculotropic MF), there are limited

Synchronous Hodgkin lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma: A rare case report and literature review.

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a lymphoproliferative disease arising in the lymphoid tissue, which is characterized by Reed-Sternberg cells. Adenocarcinoma is the most frequent pathological type of stomach cancer. Improved survival in HL patients leads to the development of secondary malignancies. However, synchronous occurrence of these 2 malignancies is extremely rare. Here, we present a 45-year-old male complaining of a lymph node mass in the neck, without any abdominal symptoms, diagnosed as HL and gastric adenocarcinoma with hepatitis B carrier status. We treated the patient with 8 courses of p

[One case of multiple primary carcinoma: laryngeal neuroendocrine carcinoma complicated with splenic mantle cell lymphoma].

To report a rare case of multiple primary carcinoma:laryngeal neuroendocrine carcinoma complicated with splenic mantle cell lymphoma to improve the understanding of multiple primary carcinoma. The incidence rate of multiple primary carcinoma was low. Laryngeal neuroendocrine carcinoma with mantle cell lymphoma has not been reported yet. Early diagnosis and antidiastole is very important for MPC. Pathological examination and immunohistochemistry plays an important role in the diagnosis of multiple primary carcinoma, laryngeal neuroendocrine carcinoma and mantle cell lymphoma.

Nasal Tip Schwannoma Coexisting With Vestibular Schwannoma.

Although a schwannoma can originate from any central or peripheral nerves, schwannomas originating from the nasal tip are extremely rare and only 4 cases have been reported so far in English literature. These 4 cases appeared solely without any other accompanying schwannomas. However, the authors recently treated a patient with a nasal tip schwannoma coexisting with vestibular schwannoma. The nasal tip schwannoma was successfully removed without cosmetic deformity by using an open rhinoplasty approach.
