[Malignant neoplasm in burn scar: Marjolin's ulcer. Report of two cases and review of the literature].

BACKGROUND: Marjolin's ulcer forms part of a group of neoplasms that originate in a burn scar, a phenomenon associated with superficial tissue trauma. The frequency of Marjolin's ulcer is low and represents between 2 and 5% of all squamous cell carcinomas of the skin. This condition is found three times more frequently in men than in women and is thought to be more aggressive than conventional squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. CLINICAL CASES: We present two cases of squamous cell carcinoma that originated on a burn scar. 41 year old woman with gasoline burn on the left foot, 3 months old,

Proliferative epidermal lesions associated with anogenital Paget's disease.

A series of 35 cases of Paget's disease (PD) of the vulva and perianal area were studied to characterize the spectrum of proliferative epidermal lesions that occur in this rare disease but generally have been overlooked. The study group consisted of 8 men and 27 women with a median age of 66 years. Nineteen patients (54%) had one or more benign proliferative epidermal lesions, including 7 of 22 patients (32%) with vulvar PD and 12 of 13 patients (92%) with perianal PD. Two patients also had malignant squamous cell neoplasms. Three categories of epidermal hyperplasia were identified: (1) squamo

Squamous cell carcinoma as a complication of chronic osteomyelitis.

In summary, the foot is generally not a common site for the occurrence of squamous cell carcinoma. However, since the foot may more frequently be the site of osteomyelitis, one must not ignore the possibility of a squamous cell carcinoma developing as a secondary complication of a chronic draining osteomyelitic sinus. In recent years antibiotics have greatly decreased the incidence of chronic osteomyelitis, but have not proved to be the sole answer to bone infections. In treating recalcitrant ulcers of unknown etiology that have not responded to conventional modes of therapy, malignancy must b

Paraganglioma of the vulva.

A case of vulvar paraganglioma is reported. Following presentation with vulvar pain, a 1-cm nodule was excised from the labium minus of a 58-year-old woman. Histologically, the tumor was composed of nests of round eosinophilic cells with moderately pleomorphic nuclei, beneath an intact squamous epithelium. Ultrastructural studies indicated two cell types within the neoplasm: chief cells with numerous small neurosecretory granules and peripheral slender sustentacular cells. A reticulin stain confirmed the "zellballen" nature of the neoplasm, and the neoplastic cells showed moderate argyrophilia

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma presenting as periodontal lesion in the mandibular posterior region.

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) is a relatively rare malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity. It represents less than 10% of diagnosed intraoral carcinoma. Because of its close proximity to the teeth and periodontium, the tumour can mimic tooth-related benign inflammatory conditions. This case report describes a patient diagnosed with GSCC presenting as localised periodontitis.

Non-melanomatous skin cancer in the elderly: diagnosis and management.

Non-melanomatous skin cancers, particularly basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, are frequently observed in elderly persons and are primarily the result of the chronic, cumulative effects of exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet light radiation). Characteristics of both types of neoplasm and diagnosis and management of non-melanomatous skin cancer are reviewed. Treatment based on multiple factors, including patient age, overall health status, histologic pattern, and cosmetic considerations, is described.

New histopathological and molecular findings in gynecological cancers.

This review covers significant developments in the pathological classification of gynecological tumors in recent years. Topics covered include The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Classification of endometrial carcinomas and how to incorporate this into routine reporting, the fact that most synchronous endometrial and ovarian endometrioid carcinomas represent metastasis from the endometrium to the ovary, and the important subject of lymphovascular space invasion in endometrial carcinomas. The categorization of cervical squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and adenocarcinomas and vulval and vaginal SCCs i

An Updated Review of the Therapeutic Management of Keratoacanthomas.

OBJECTIVE: Keratoacanthomas are fast-growing cutaneous neoplasms that can be difficult to distinguish from squamous cell carcinoma, both clinically and histologically. The uncertain behavior of these neoplasms creates a challenge in management, and treatment choice often varies significantly between cases. The objective of this review is to discuss the most common and up-to-date treatment modalities used in the management of keratoacanthomas. METHODS: A literature search was performed using PubMed to access and review relevant keratoacanthoma treatment modalities published within the last 40

Squamous papilloma involving the mandible: A case report and descriptive literature review.

Squamous papilloma is a benign neoplasm that originates from the stratified squamous epithelium of the mucous membrane. Its principal etiological factor is human papillomavirus infection, with a predilection for manifesting within the oral cavity. Squamous papilloma predominantly affects regions on the palate, cheeks, lips and tongue. However, to the best of our knowledge, the occurrence of squamous papilloma within the confines of the mandible remains unreported hitherto. The present report documents a case of squamous papilloma involving the mandible who was managed at the First Affiliated H

Single-port transoral robotic surgery for a rare tonsil mass.

Squamous cell carcinoma predominates as the most common malignant lesion of the oropharynx with human papilloma virus-associated disease now predominant over tobacco-related oropharynx cancer. Other rare malignant pathologies can manifest as visible neoplasms in these anatomic sites with varying degrees of symptoms such as dysphagia, odynophagia, otalgia, aspiration, hemorrhage, weight loss and dyspnea. We present a case of a rarely encountered primary oropharyngeal sarcoma managed by single-port transoral robotic resection and a selective cervical lymph node dissection followed by adjuvant ra

[Clinicopathological features of human papilloma virus associated squamous cell carcinomas of the vulva].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between human papilloma virus (HPV) status and clinicopathological features of vulva carcinoma and its clinical significance. METHODS: Histological sections of 37 cases of vulval carcinoma were subclassified. Standard PCR (HPV types 6/11, 16, 18) were applied to formalin fixed, paraffin wax sections. RESULTS: There were 24 cases of keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (KSC), 7 cases of basaloid carcinoma (BC) and 6 cases of warty carcinoma (WC). HPVs, Mainly HPV 16, were detected in 10 of the 37 cases, and all of them were women with BC and WC types

PAX8 Positivity, Abnormal p53 Expression, and p16 Negativity in a Primary Endometrial Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Primary endometrial squamous cell carcinoma (PESCC) is a rare entity. As the clinicopathologic features and the immunophenotype have not been completely defined yet, here we report our experience and review of the literature on this topic. A 73-yr-old nulliparous woman presented with pelvic pain and vaginal bleeding. Endometrial biopsy showed a carcinoma with squamous differentiation infiltrating the myometrium. Total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and selective pelvic lymphadenectomy was performed. Definitive diagnosis was squamous carcinoma of the endometrium, with one lym

Cancer of unknown primary origin: a decade of experience in a community-based hospital.

BACKGROUND: Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) origin is a very aggressive disease with a poor prognosis. Most of the literature reports of CUP are generated from tertiary cancer centers. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all patients with a diagnosis of CUP was performed between January 1995 and January 2005. Age, gender, diagnostic evaluation, histologic diagnosis, location of metastases, treatment, and survival were recorded. RESULTS: Ninety-one patients met the inclusion criteria. The pathologic diagnoses included adenocarcinoma (42.8%), undifferentiated carcinoma (34.5%), squamous c

[Salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma: unusual variants with detection of the t(11,19)(q21;p13) translocation].

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) represents the most common malignant salivary gland tumour. Based on the proportion of their constituent cell types, MECs may display a wide morphological spectrum, thereby mimicking diverse types of other primary salivary gland carcinomas. The correct diagnosis relies on demonstration of classical MEC features, assisted by histochemical and immunohistochemical stains in equivocal cases. The current article aims to demonstrate, on the basis of own observations, how the detection of the MEC-typical t(11, 19) translocation may be of great value in difficult-to-clas

Glandular lesions of the vagina: a review of a group of rare lesions.

Primary carcinomas of the vagina are uncommon tumours, accounting for <1% of female cancers; these are also less common than metastatic carcinoma, which constitutes a significant majority of vaginal epithelial neoplasms. The most common primary tumour type is squamous cell carcinoma. Primary adenocarcinomas of the vagina are extremely rare and of various morphological types, many of which are broadly similar to those arising in the cervix. When faced with a probable primary vaginal adenocarcinoma, the pathologist faces a dilemma since the normal vagina does not contain glands, making the origi

Primary Renal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Native Polycystic Kidney and Ureter 16 Years After Living Donor Kidney Transplant.

We describe a case of a 55-year-old woman with polycystic kidney disease who received a living donor kidney transplant 16 years earlier and was on immunosuppressive therapy with satisfactory renal function. The donor was her mother. The patient presented with flank pain on the right side and macrohematuria, and noncontrast computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging led to the diagnosis of tumors in the remaining right native polycystic kidney and ureter, as well as secondary retroperitoneal dissemination. We performed right radical nephrectomy and ureterectomy with extirpation of 2 met

From skin to thyroid: incidental finding of dual-variant papillary thyroid carcinoma in a patient with squamous cell carcinoma.

Dear Editor, The occurrence of multiple primary neoplasms in a single patient is rare but well documented, and the incidental discovery of a previously undiagnosed thyroid carcinoma during lymph node dissection for another primary malignancy presents a unique diagnostic challenge. Previous reports have described incidental detection of papillary thyroid carcinoma during neck dissection for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue, via Tc-99m prostate-specific membrane antigen imaging in a patient with a negative fine-needle aspiration (FNA) result, and during oncologic staging for esophagea
