Frequency and type of renal lesions in dogs naturally infected with leptospira species.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and type of renal lesions associated with positive titers against Leptospira sp. in a s … ), mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis and interstitial nephritis (MPGN+IN) in 34% (n= 119), nephrosclerosis in 0.57% (n= 2), mesangial glomerulonephritis in 0.28% (n= 1), and interstitial nephritis (IN) in 0.28% (n= 1). Thirty-four percent (n= 122) of the dogs were seropositive to Leptospira sp., mainly against serovar canicola. Among dogs with IN (alone …

Renal cell carcinoma co-existent with other renal disease: clinico-pathological features in pre-dialysis patients and those receiving dialysis or renal transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Patients on chronic dialysis are prone to developing acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD), which may lead to the development of … d and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Overall, there was a preponderance of males (75%); nephrosclerosis was the predominant co-existent disease (31%). The median intervals from renal disease to RCC in the dialysis and transplanted groups were significantly longer than in the pre-dialysis group (15.8+/-1.1 vs 2.4+/-0.7 years, P<0.0001). In contrast to …

Renal disease in the inner city.

For various ethnic and socioeconomic reasons the pattern of renal disease in the inner city displays distinctive features. Hypertension is frequent, often intractable, and generally conditioned by salt sensitivity and a high sodium intake. Chronic hypertensive nephrosclerosis, found predominantly in African Americans, comprises marked cardiomegaly, renal shrinkage, and hypertensive retinopathy. It has been overdiagnosed in the past, but actually accounts for less than 20% of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in African Americans. Malignant hypertension, less frequent nowadays, may cause renal shu…

The epidemiology and prognosis of glomerulonephritis in Denmark 1985-1997.

BACKGROUND: The existence of a national renal biopsy register and a national terminal uraemia status register in Denmark provides an opportu … ainder with mortalities of 4-7 and 6-12. The presence of multiple glomerular pathology, chronic GN, nephrosclerosis and chronic interstitial nephropathy worsened the prognosis, while the presence of immune deposits only worsened the prognosis of focal segmental glomerulopathy. Mortality was related to uraemia and co-morbidity at biopsy, and to the incidence of re …

Inhibition of periostin expression protects against the development of renal inflammation and fibrosis.

Increased renal expression of periostin, a protein normally involved in embryonic and dental development, correlates with the decline of renal function in experimental models and patient biopsies. Because periostin has been reported to induce cell differentiation, we investigated whether it is also involved in the development of renal disease and whether blocking its abnormal expression improves renal function and/or structure. After unilateral ureteral obstruction in wild-type mice, we observed a progressive increase in the expression and synthesis of periostin in the obstructed kidney that a

Calcium-mediated parathyroid hormone release changes in patients treated with the calcimimetic agent cinacalcet.

BACKGROUND: The parathyroid-calcium (Ca(2+)-PTH) curve expresses modulation of parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion by the parathyroid gland as a function of changing extracellular Ca(2+) concentration. Patients with hyperparathyroidism (HPT) show a rightward shift of the curve compared with controls, suggesting a reduced sensitivity of parathyroid cells to Ca(2+). Increasing the sensitivity of the parathyroid gland to extracellular Ca(2+) by manipulation of the Ca(2+)-sensing receptor (CaR) may have therapeutic potential. Calcimimetics allosterically modify CaR and render it more sensitive to

Non-Diabetic Kidney Disease in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus-11-Year Experience from a Single Center.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), non-diabetic renal disease (NDRD) can also occurs, as well as diabetic nephropathy. NDRD is most accurately diagnosed using kidney biopsy. AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence and type of NDRD diagnosed by kidney biopsy in patients with type 2 DM and the correlation of clinical and laboratory findings with histopathological diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From April 2007 to October 2018, 290 kidney biopsies were performed at the Department of Nephrology, Internal Medicine Clinic in Banja Luka, out of which 18 patie

Ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate in hypertensives with renal failure: comparison between diabetic nephropathy and non-diabetic glomerulopathy.

The purpose of this study was to examine a possible difference in the 24-h blood pressure (BP) profile between hypertensives with diabetic nephropathy (DN) and those with non-diabetic glomerulopathy (non-DN). We measured 24-h ambulatory BP in 34 type 2 DN and 34 non-DN patients who were hospitalized for the educational program in our hospital. There were no significant differences in 24-h and daytime systolic BP between DN (143 vs. 136 mmHg, NS for 24-h systolic BP) and non-DN (143 vs. 138 mmHg, NS for daytime systolic BP). Although both groups disclosed blunted nocturnal decrease in BP and we

Renal disease in the elderly.

The types of renal disease that are particularly common in the elderly include acute renal failure, prerenal azotemia, multiple myeloma kidney, and obstruction. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, now proven effective in controlling renal disease in older patients, require special considerations when applied to the elderly patient.

[Protection of rosiglitazone against renal interstitial lesion and its mechanism].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protection of rosiglitazone (RSG) against renal interstitial lesion and its mechanism. METHODS: Male adult SD rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: Sham group, undergoing sham operation; Sham + RSG group, undergoing sham operation and treated with RSG (30 mg.kg(-1).d(-1)); UUO group, undergoing unilateral left ureter obstruction; UUO + RSG5 group, undergoing UUO and treated with RSG (5 mg.kg(-1).d(-1)); and UUO + RSG30 group, undergoing UUO and treated with RSG (30 mg.kg(-1).d(-1)). Except the Sham group, the other groups were divided into 3 subgroups of 6 ap

Renovascular hypertension: pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

Renovascular hypertension can result from renal artery lesions involving the main renal artery, or its branches. It is generally felt that the elevation of blood pressure results from excessive systemic vasoconstriction secondary to enhanced renin secretion by one or part of one kidney. Renin secretion is enhanced because of constriction of the renal artery and resultant intrarenal ischemia. Clinically patients cannot be distinguished from those with essential hypertension and diagnosis must be made with arteriography although urography and isotope renography may suggest the diagnosis. Mesangial lesions and focal glomerular sclerosis in the aging rat.

The pathogenesis of focal glomerular sclerosis (FGS) and its relation to proteinuria and idiopathic nephrotic syndrome are unknown. Urine protein excretion in Sprague-Dawley rats increased with age. Fifty per cent of 12-month and 90 per cent of 24-month-old animals were proteinuric (greater than 20 mg. per day). Heavily proteinuric old rats manifested biochemical changes characteristic of nephrotic syndrome without significant loss of renal function. Three-month, 6-month, and nonproteinuric 12-month-old animals had mesangial deposits of IgM in occasional lobules of some glomeruli and slight me
