Fifteen cases of renal minimal change disease and five normal glomeruli were studied by high resolution light microscopy (HRLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Effacement of podocytes usually is accompanied by aggregation of microfilaments in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells parallel to the glomerular basement membrane (GBM). The aggregated microfilaments were detected as a dense blue line by high resolution light microscopy. The presence of this line appears to be a reliable sign for the detection of diffusely effaced podocytes by light microscopy. However, when effacement of

Minimal changes in the glomerular structure and definitively provable only by the aid of morphometric methods. This is of value especially for the minimal proliferative intercapillary glomerulonephritis with and without nephrotic syndrome where, because of the different clinical symptomatology, changes in the morphology may be expected too which however, usually are not recognizable with the methods of light-microscopy. That is why morphometric analyses of kidney tissues of ever ten patients of both groups of the disease were made and the results compared with each after and against normal kid

Minimal change disease (MCD), considered one of the major causes of nephrotic syndrome, is a complex pathological condition with disturbances in podocytes' foot processes. Numerous studies suggested the essential role of vitamin D3 in maintaining proper glomerulus function. However, the data on direct potential of that compound in reference to podocytes are scarce. Thus, here we assessed the influence of calcitriol (active vitamin D3) on podocyte function, apart from commonly used steroids (methylprednisolone). CIHP-1 podocyte cell line was used to implement the LPS-PAN-induced MCD in vitro mo

BACKGROUND: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) results in massive proteinuria and hypoalbuminemia, which are responsible for a compensatory increase in protein synthesis in the liver. Serum cholinesterase (ChE) also increases in NS. However, its clinical value is not fully elucidated.
METHODS: In this study, 184 patients with NS who underwent kidney biopsy were included. The patients were divided into two groups according to serum ChE levels, as follows: hypercholinesterasemia (HC) and non-hypercholinesterasemia (NHC) groups. The clinical factors were compared between the two groups.
RESULTS: The HC gr

A 32-year-old Japanese woman at 8 weeks of gestation was admitted to our hospital for systemic edema, hypoalbuminemia, and severe proteinuria. The patient had a history of generalized alopecia and migraine. We diagnosed nephrotic syndrome, and renal biopsy revealed minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS). We administered 1000 mg/day of methylprednisolone for 3 days. Oral corticosteroid therapy was followed by 40 mg of prednisolone daily. We carefully selected concomitant medication after considering organogenesis. Before and after renal biopsy, we administered heparin, antithrombin III, and i

Introduction Pulmonary embolism is a potentially life-threatening complication of nephrotic syndrome. Syncope is rarely reported as an initial presentation of pulmonary embolism in nephrotic patients. Case presentation We describe a 35-year-old man who was taking steroids and diuretics for relapse of minimal change disease who presented after a syncopal event. The patient was hypotensive and had distended neck veins. The major laboratory findings were hypoalbuminemia with mild proteinuria. The findings on electrocardiography, chest radiography, and echocardiography and the elevated plasma D-di
